Eindelijk Niño de Elche gezien, in het Bimhuis. Samen net een gitarist, een zeer olijke baardmans met bizar haar. Niño in een wit, onafgemaakt pak. In eerste instantie redelijk traditioneel maar gaandeweg toch vrijer en theatraler. Prachtige figuur. Met een goede camera had ik een prachtige foto in gedachte, maar dit is sowieso het soort optreden waar de telefoon in de zak blijft.

LUX is een beetje een rollercoaster, Berghain zette hoge verwachtingen, eerste luisterbeurten beetje bijstellen maar toch alweer dagelijks gedraaid afgelopen week en al blijft El Mal Querer de favoriet toch weer een banger. Het is toch ook gewoon een mix van alles uit het verleden maar dan als een soort klassieke muziek maar meets pop. Geweldig ambitieus en „een vuist in het gezicht van de tijdgeest” zoals Necros Christos eens zei over een 3LP. Zie ook Charli XCX met John Cale.

Lekker album hoor, was wel ff benieuwd hoever ie zou gaan in z'n hyperpopliefde, maar goed, underscores en Frost Children zijn ook leuk (al vond ik de laastste Frost Children niet zo wild als ik gehoopt)…

Geen nieuwe muziek, maar ik heb wel eindelijk mijn project afgemaakt om alle Black Sabbath platen chronologisch te luisteren en er een persoonlijke best of playlist (YouTube Music/Spotify).

Zelfs nog een tekstje geschreven:

My personal Best of Black Sabbath. At least one track of every studio album and at most 5, including Seventh Star and the Heaven and Hell album, because that is just Dio-Sabbath. E5150/Mob Rules and Odin's Court/Valhalla count as one song. My taste in Black Sabbath tends to be pretty canon. I was surprised how much I liked Forbidden, general considered their worst album. But the production apparently had a lot to do with that, so maybe the 2024 remix worked miracles. The worst records of the band for me are Technical Ecstasy and especially Never Say Die! I would even say this slump already starts with Sabotage. But still these are more boring and bland than actively "turn that crap off!" bad. My favorites are Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the duo Heaven and Hell/Mob Rules. The Tony Martin-era is mostly solid to good, but never reaches the peaks of the Ozzy and Dio albums.

Wil niemand ergens van beschuldigen maar kan me niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat die haat voor Forbidden iets te maken heeft met Ice T. (die niet rapt) en by extension producer Ernie C. (die ook niet rapt)… 🙃

Boards of Canada - Inferno
De titel voorspelde ergens al (maar dan toch anders). Dit is BoC's meest religieuze plaat. Na het wasteland van Tomorrow's Harvest, lijken de broertjes nu de toegankelijk warmte hebben gevonden, in mystieke wonderen. Ook de stemmetjes zijn glorieus terug en hoe! (I love you, but I love the Lord.) Er zijn een paar superfunky tracks die me zelfs aan Air of de baslijntjes van Daft Punk doen denken. Andere liedjes chillen zoals alleen BoC dat kan - het harpje in Deep Time, de Oosterse sample in Naraka. Zo'n goede plaat had ik niet meer van ze verwacht. Al is ie wel wat te lang (en komen sommige melodien me wel heel bekend voor). Ze citeren gewoon lekker uit eigen werk, i guess.

Ja ik hoorde ook een toefje Daft Punk tegen het einde. Je bent de eerste die dit ook opvalt.

Na Black Sabbath heb ik me ook op het luisteren van de discografie van andere acts gestort. Ik heb er ook een naam voor bedacht. Dus hierbij: The Dad Rock Chronicles, Part II: The Best of Van Halen according to Martijn (YouTube Music/Spotify)

Five tracks off of all the David Lee Roth albums, because they are all great, including the reunion album. Well, Diver Down is just good. They are all nice and short too. Such a creative and virtuoso mix of rock, 50s pop, (big band) jazz and Motown and always fun too. I think it is pretty telling that there never have been Van Halen ripoffs; the sound is just too hard to copy. This era of Van Halen is pretty unique too in that a lot of the better song are the non-singles. Probably because the more straightforward rock songs were pick by the label out of fear the more creative stuff might a bit too weird for radio.

When Sammy Hagar replaced Roth, the songs become much more conventional rock songs. Still, a good rock song with Van Halen brothers playing on them is always welcome. Unfortunately, like every 80s rock band, VH puts a lot of ballads on these albums and Hagar just doesn't have the voice for them. He hits the notes perfectly, but his somewhat nasal, shrieky voice lacks the warmth and depth necessary for a good ballad.

Van Halen III is bad. It is like after Hagar left, the brothers were so happy they now finally could go wild with all the weird and experimental ideas Hagar vetoed that, they rushed them out, because a lot of the songs sound like early demos. Poor Gary Cherone sounds dreadful. Well, at least it is bad in an interesting way.

But like I said: with A Different Kind of Truth the band with out on a high note (although David Lee Roth couldn't hit those any more on that album). Songs as 'As Is' and 'Honeybabysweetiedoll' are as good as anything on the earliest albums.

Best albums: Van Halen (such an explosion of creativity!), Fair Warning and 1984. Favourite songs: 'The Atomic Punk' (Van Halen), 'Light Up the Sky' (Van Halen II), 'Unchained', 'Push Comes to Shove' (both Fair Warning) and 'Hot for Teacher' (1984)

The Dad Rock Chronicles Part III: The Best of Deep Purple according to Martijn (YouTube Music/Spotify)

The biggest discovery for me was that I like Ian Gillan least of the four singers Deep Purple has had. He is a really good singer, but all the other three (or four, if you include Glenn Hughes) singers have more soulful voices. Another big picture thing is that over their entire discography, Deep Purple are pretty solid, but always a bit inconsistent, never making that one true masterpiece.

The first two albums are a bit meh, typical sixties psych rock. On the self-titled third album the band finds its voice. Definitely check out The Painter.

Then there's the period the band is most famous for. All the most famous tracks are from this era. Not too many deep cuts. The best of the albums are In Rock and Machine Head.

Usually I don't have a single favourite track for a band, but with Deep Purple I do: I will pick Mistreated each and every time. I think Burn is their strongest album overall. Unfortunately again the inconsistency strikes, because Stormbringer is a lot weaker already.

Come Taste the Band is interesting. Ritchie Blackmore was replaced by fusion guitarist Tommy Bolin. This album is a lot more fusion-y and funk-y, but where most fusion is very smooth, Deep Purple retains that bluesy hard rock edge. Definitely check this one out, a bit of a hidden gem.

Then there's the reunion of the In Rock/Machine Head-era line-up. Now with a slightly more streamlined 80s sound with some AOR-influences, without losing the typical Deep Purple sound. I really like those albums. 70s DP can sometimes be a bit noodle-y and that is gone here. I will include Slaves & Masters in this list; it is the same successful formula with just a different singer. However, The Battle Rages On is one reunion too many of some people who clearly don't like each other.

I found the entire Steve Morse-era a bit of a slog. Like Bolin, Morse is also a guitarist with a fusion background and I just don't like his style. He has this "this is the funky part, so I will play some stuff from my library of funky riffs and here in the jazz-y part I will do some classic jazzy licks" approach, which makes a lot of songs sound like pastiche. They often also just don't rock. The band also goes into musical territory that is not suited for Ian Gillan again voice.

Usually there are one or two songs that actually sound like Deep Purple on the Morse-albums. Unfortunately, Abandon, which with Rapture of the Deep is the best of the Morse Purple albums, is not available for streaming. The same goes for Bananas, but that one is not very good.

The two worst albums from the bands discography are also from this era. There is the excruciatingly awful pandemic cover album Turning to Crime. We were all bored and needed stuff to do, guys. No need to release your noodling around to the world. The other one is Purpendicular, the first album with Morse. Either Morse had too much of a free hand or the band wanted to finally release all the songs Ritchie Blackmore had vetoed, because that album is sort of 'experimental' in the bad way.

New guitarist Simon McBride is an actual rock guitarist once again. =1 is still a bit Morse-ish, but I was very surprised by how hard the new album Splat! rocks.

So, Mistreated is in my opinion *the* ultimate Deep Purple song. Then there is the good stuff you know like Child in Time, Speed King, Smoke on the Water, Burn and Highway Star. For some lesser known highlights, check out The Painter, Super Trouper, You Keep on Moving, Dead or Alive, The Cut Runs Deep and finally The Lunatic, to hear how hard a band can still rock on their 24th album.

Ik ben altijd liefhebber geweest van dat jaren '80 dubbel livealbum. Gillan in relaxte bui, een grapje hier en daar. En met een vettere versie van banger 'Bad Attitude'. Ik luister al eeuwen niet naar die band, maar als tiener vond ik het wel erg fijn, groovey doch heavyesque.

Deep Purple was altijd een legacy band voor mij, toen ik naar metal (metal dus) ging luisteren viel zelfs een band als Saxon als vroeg weer af want Priest, Maiden en vooral Mercyful Fate. En bovendien waren Bay Area thrash en wat proto-death metal happening. Toen Jorn Lande echt een paar bangers uitbracht met ARK, Beyond Twilight en zelfs Masterplan in het begin van de noughties ging hij op z’n solo-albums die classic rock nieuw leven inblazen en ben ik wel wat van die dingen gaan waarderen. Maar al die albums van Foreigner, Rainbow, MSG en dergelijke altijd naast een paar bangers van die suffe rock ’n’ roll songs waar toch een generatiekloof optreedt. Bij Deep Purple is ie nooit weggeweest, al is Mistreated (gecovered door Jorn) wel OK.

Enhousiast vertellen over Metallica en dan een oom die beweert dat Deep Purple dat allemaal al gedaan had hielp ook niet. 😅

The Dad Rock Chronicles, Part IV: The Best of the Jack White Musical Universe according to Martijn (YouTube Music/Spotify)

My personal Best of all of Jack White's studio album output as The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs and Jack White, plus two b-sides, plus a track of a song with Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi. At least one track of every studio album and at most 5.

You can count on Jack White. Or maybe I am just a massive sucker for the man's music. Everything released under The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather labels is good to great to me. It all sounds immediately like 'Jack White music' too, with some nuances: WS more primitive blues and folk, Raconteurs a bit more late sixties gentle psychedelica and TDW more proto-hard rock. As a hard rock fan, the latter are a favourite, also because I really love Alison Mosshart's vocals.

With the solo albums, White reaches "I know what I am good at now, let's try some different stuff"-phase of his career. Which results in the least albums of his career, because there are a lot of songs on them that sound like they were a lot more fun to make than to listen to. Still, always a few bangers too. The big exception is No Name, which is just Jack White doing what he is great at.

The biggest surprise is that for their reputation for wild swings, Metallica are actually very consistent. They always make Metallica music as much as Iron Maiden always makes Iron Maiden music, to name a band that is not known for its stylistic variety. Kill'em All is more punk-y Metallica, Master of Puppets more progg-y Metallica, with Ride the Lightning seamlessly bridging the gap. The Black Album is hard rock Metallica and Load and Reload more classic rock Metallica. Load and especially Reload are the albums they experiment somewhat with non-Metallica music, but only one a few tracks. St. Anger is garage-but-artsy Metallica. From Death Magnetic on the band settles in a fixed sound that is somewhere halfway between the long, proggy songs of ...And Justice for All and dry hard rock influences of the self-titled album. On Death Magnetic and Hardwired... to Self-Destruct they do so with some energy, but 72 Seasons is the first time in their entire career they sound like a band truly on autopilot. Therefore their least album.

The wild swings are mainly in the production. St. Anger has the worst reputation, but I actually like the rawness of that album. Based on the documentary, I maintain it is an pretty decent attempt at doing for their music what CoBrA and Basquiat did for painting. Not being a fan of thin, harsh sounding music, the ones I like like least are ...And Justice for All and Death Magnetic.

Having said all this, Metallica is one of those band that has a clear consensus best album in Master of Puppets. Ride the Lightning is close and in For Whom the Bell Tolls and Creeping Death maybe even has the better tracks, but it also has some filler. After that, it is up to your personal tastes. I happen to like classic rock and garage rock, so I lean towards Load and St. Anger.

The Dad Rock Chronicles, Part VI: the Best of the Josh Homme Musical Universe according to Martijn (YouTube Music/Spotify) YT Music met alle Desert Sessions tracks, Spotify mist tracks van Desert Sessions 1-8

I got into Josh Homme's music with Kyuss during the Welcome to Sky Valley period. As these things go, those are still among my favourite records of his. For his main bands Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age, my opinion is a very steep ramp up in quality from Wretch and Blues for the Red Sun, reaching peak Josh Homme with Welcome to Sky Valley. He and his bandmates then maintain this peak until QotSA's Songs for the Deaf. After that I feel there is a very gradual decline. There is mostly an exchange of directness and power for more sophistication and classic/prog rock influences, but that also means there is just a bit less oomph in each record. Times New Roman is a bit better than Villains though. As I gravitate to the harder rock songs, I picked more of those for the playlist, making the effect a bit less noticeable than when listening to the entire albums.

Speaking of novelty tracks: there are a lot of them on the Desert Sessions, particularly 1-8. A bunch of them with unfunny edgelord humor to boot. I bet this is at least part of the reason those are not available for streaming (though they are easy to find on YouTube). Still, there are always at least one or two good tracks on them, often the ones that have Homme's signature clearly all over them. The Desert Sessions 9-12 are available on streaming services. These are much more serious and much better, especially 9 & 10 with PJ Harvey, but still not up there with the best QotSA albums.

Same goes for the Them Crooked Vultures project. That one sounds basically like slightly below average QotSA record. Well at first it sounds like an awesome QotSa record, but it is one of the most front-loaded albums I know.

Finally, Eagles of Death Metal are lots of fun as long as they stick to bone dry boogie rock. This band excels at that, the rest is fine to forgetable. Unfortunately, the amount of variation increases on each album and therefore the amount of fun. The first two are by far the best. Still, even on the later albums there are some great boogie tunes among the covers of Careless Whisper and other forgetable stuff.
A pet peeve: one of the very best songs in Homme's discography, Kyuss's Spaceship Landing, is only available on streaming with tens of minutes of silence and then a novelty bonus track attached, which makes it annoying in the middle of playlists.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that ZZ Top sounded like ZZ Top right from the start. In the beginning, they were just a lot more traditional in their blues and boogie rock. Starting with El Loco, electronic elements from New Wave began to appear in their music and they found their definitive sound.

There isn’t really a consistent pattern in the quality of their albums either. A really good album can be followed by a very mediocre one, only to be followed by another top-notch record. Because ZZ Top is so consistent in its style, the floor is set pretty high, especially on the later albums once the formula had crystallized. In my research, I’ve noticed that XXX is often completely panned, while La Futura is praised to the skies. Sure, La Futura is indeed better than XXX, but it's all within a narrow bandwith. I’ve also noticed that Afterburner and Recycler are often dismissed as weak imitations of Eliminator (the album titles probably don't help), even though, in my opinion, they’re almost equivalent to a triple album. BTW, if I had to name a peak period for ZZ Top, that would be it.

ZZ Top is also a band whose best-known songs are generally the very best. Among the perhaps lesser-known tracks, I can recommend:

- Master of Sparks (Tres Hombres)
- Esther Be the One (Degüello)
- My Head’s in Mississippi (Recycler)
- World of Swirl (Antenna)
- Sinpusher (XXX)

Na Afterburner heb ik het minder scherp al is het allemaal gewoon prima ZZ Top. La Futura sprong er wel even uit door de kale productie en ik denk ook wel ineens weer wat media-aandacht vanwege die rapcover of de back to form (volgens de pers) productie.

Afterburner was 1 van de eerste twee LPs die ik kocht, doet idd zeker niet onder voor Eliminator.

Mijn favorieten zijn wel de oudere albums Rio Grande Mud, Tejas en Tres Hombres, denk ik.

Eerlijk gezegd ben ik ook niet zo een fan van Timecop1983. Ik houd van synthwave waar wat meer stamp op zit, zoals 3Force. Die hebben ook een nieuw nummer, maar daarmee kon ik mijn grapje niet maken.
