i was surprised to find a discussion about the magazine online after less than a week but fair play to you all. i just wanted to answer a few points raised here. well excuse me first for doing it in english. i may be able to read some dutch but i`d look a bit stupid trying to write it in dutch. anyway...
the "we care about music" thing. okay, to be honest that bit grates on me a little. what i think Jon meant when he wrote it is that a lot of mainstream journalists get jaded by music cos they`ve been in the industry so long. i think they all start off for the right reasons but the music industry can taint anyone eventually.
so i personally would like that bit on the opening page changed but it isn`t my place to edit the statement from the editor. he`s been out the country since it was written but i`ll at least tell him what i think.
point 2 - dance music.
well we certainly aren`t anti-dance. i listen to allsorts of music including dance and hip hop or whatever. the thing is, i`m not an expert on those fields. With guitar music i have a lot of history as a fan or at writing my own music. As much as i like to dabble in different styles though, i don`t feel i`m qualified to write about them. it would probably make me look stupider than usual and i`m sure that would annoy the dance fans more than not covering it at all.
maybe it will grow to include other styles later, but at the moment we`re only a small group of people. if someone joins us that can write about these things accurately then that`s fine.
point 3 - i`m glad you think our english is okay. i haven`t met most of the writers yet so i don`t know if they can speak dutch. we`re all people who`ve ended up in the netherlands for whatever reason and we feel there is a market for a music site here in english. I`m learning dutch but loads of people don`t bother. Overall, we`ll cater to english speakers in holland, dutch people (who all seem to speak english anyway), and english speakers anywhere else.
I know kindamuzik used to be english. i`m not sure why that changed, but it left a hole. I clearly can`t claim to be a professional journalist. If anything, i`ve spent the past 8 years trying to destroy every rule i learned about the english language, so it`s hard work to suddenly attempt to work with them again. All I can hope is that write well enough to convey something good about the music. Ideally I just want to make people want to check out the things I find cool.
Actually, the original plan was for incendiary to be a free printed paper distributed throughout the country. hopefully that will still happen eventually but for now we`re gonna try build it up online and maybe even pick up some writing skills along the way.
point 4 - are we only indie rock?
i don`t know. the original spec set by the editor was to cover small indie bands away from the major labels. we`ve already bypassed that cos as a group of people we have our own tastes and we`ll each write about what we like. I think over time it`ll grow and expand. Even I can`t judge it after only a week.
Overall I`m glad that you`ve all shown some interest. I`ll do my best to make the site as good as i can. There isn`t any money for doing it. I think most of us are unemployed and just doing it cos we want to be involved in music again. If people have suggestions then they`re welcome. Please feel free to email them and maybe we can do something about it. It`s very early days but I hope the site keeps getting better and finds its market cos i`m enjoying working on it.
