The girl in front of me at yoga the other day had such a good boy's cut and I asked her where she did it and it turns out the same place I used to go when I had short hair. Now I am wishing for 50s-style boy's hair again.

I know this thread is meant to be for the ladies (you have to imagine me grinning in a sinister way and winking as I say that or it doesn't work) but I think I need some sort of haircut, and since I've not had my hair cut by anyone who I didn't live with or who wasn't me in the last, oh, ten years, I don't even really know what to do. I want to get something cool, an actual haircut, but not a "haircut"

suggestions?

I know, right?, Sunday, 29 June 2008 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link

^I'm in this same boat, more or less.

Hair's way too long right now, and I can't think of anything to do but trim it. I DO NOT want to have short hair, I tried it once a couple years ago and it was awful. Any ideas for men's long hairstyles?

Here is a hastily taken iSight photo for illustrative purposes.

No idea what this means.

Laurel, Monday, 30 June 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Nicka, you seem to have really beautiful hair but on the non-short side for mens, I got nufffink to recomend.

Laurel, Monday, 30 June 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i said this to ned and i feel like a hairdresser should understand what it means (mine does): you want a 'wave around the head' style haircut. which is like tousled and free but not long

rrrobyn, Monday, 30 June 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I got lucky on Friday, the hair cuttery around the corner from my house appears to have been shuttered so I ended up spending $36 at a real salon and came out looking awesome. I'm back to my later air force look.

A "haircut" is what fashion students have. It foregrounds the artifice of the cut.

I know, right?, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

People with haircuts read style magazines instead of fasion magazines and wear vintage instead of second-hand.

I know, right?, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:19 (sixteen years ago) link

nice tom!

ikr you're getting very deep

Surmounter, Monday, 30 June 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

It foregrounds the artifice of the cut.

I'm calling bullshit on this. I think any short haircut does this, only long(er) and more unkempt 'dos do not say "I am a haircut". It's ALL artifice, after all.

"haircuts"

got my free hair cut today! not a good photo, since i had a long day, much of it spent in the wind. but the dude did a fab job - kept all the length, chopped off the split ends, cut in a few choice layers and gave me a nice sweeping fringe. oh, and i dyed it this morning:

So Nice!

Aww Rubes, that's a lovely photo - I especially like how pleased you are!

Mark C, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 11:12 (sixteen years ago) link

you look great!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Ruby you and your hair look great, I wish I were even half as photogenic as you always seem to be.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

RRs got some photo friendly angles for sure

sunny successor, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 19:58 (sixteen years ago) link

i am actually the least photogenic person i know, and used to DREAD having my photo taken. then i bought a digital camera last year, and while playing round with it and getting used to using it, i figured out i have ONE good angle (see above), so pretty much all pics of me are from that angle... totally vain, i know!

whenever i tell ppl how unphotogenic i am, they always say 'but you look so nice in all the photos i've seen!' - that's because it takes about 20 shots to get a good one, and i don't keep the bad ones!!

Rubyredd, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i need to get my hair cut again, because i hate it.
i have to go to a different person, even though i love my girl, she has just been too distracted and given me two shitty cuts in a row. i'm thinking about trying this place devachan? has anyone heard of it? they are supposed to specialize in curly hair, and it's run by the people that do the devacurl products.

also i kind of want the rihanna haircut...

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 13:48 (sixteen years ago) link

ohman you should just boot it up here and get your hair cut by janet, my hairdresser who is awesome (and inexpensive!). she's going away for end of july thru august tho :/ she will change yr (hair) life.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:29 (sixteen years ago) link

wait...janet who was in ny with you?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! (she was a little whoaa on that trip b/c of a boy etc. she really is amazing. and amazing with hair.)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

ah. well y'all are welcome back any time. i do remember janet had really nice curls

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i am really ready to stop straightening my hair.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

when i rang to make my hair appointment, they actually asked me what kind of hair i had (long, fine, lots of it) so they could match me to someone who was good with my hair type. guy did such a fab job - after getting a razor cut years ago (and the resulting split ends) my last hairdresser converted me to thinnning scissors. but this guy said that to take the weight out he would just cut like a few choice layers, cuz thinning already fine hair actually makes it frizzy!! did not know this!!

it's weird: he cut in like maybe four or five layers i think, yet it while it actually looks longer than before (?!) it feels HEAPS shorter and way way lighter. amazing!

but omg was i sad when i could not blow wave it anywhere near like it was yesterday :(

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link

bell, you should totally try devachan. it has a great reputation, and the deva products are great. if it's good enough for the knowles family...

lauren, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago) link

also: razor cuts = evil.

lauren, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago) link

also: bell, if you want to stop straightening your hair then i wouldn't recommend a short cut. i love mine and will probably never grow my hair out again, but if i don't straighten it then my peggy moffitt look turns into lesbian soccer mom.

lauren, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:53 (sixteen years ago) link

also: if i had straighter hair and nothing to do in the morning but style it, then this is the haircut i would have:

lauren, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

yesss my stylist used a razor on me last time i was in and i have so many split ends! and yes, oh to have perfectly straight hair like that...

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

oh that wld look super cute on you but yeah haha maintenance x5000

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm going to show that photo to my guy next time i go in, though, just to see what he says. he is moffitt-obsessed and might actually want to attempt it.

lauren, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:13 (sixteen years ago) link

hmmm devachan cuts are $135. that's way more than what i've ever spent on a cut before...but maybe it's worth it?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

there is apparently someone at beehive trained in the "deva" method though who charges $80...

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago) link

holy shit $135

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:58 (sixteen years ago) link

i knowwwwwww

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean i respect the art of hairdressing/styling but cmon this kind of thing is diva level weird. but i guess there's a 'designer' argument at play here, i do not know. what i do know is that hair needs to be cut every 6-8 wks if you've got a styley cut, so $135 o_O NYC

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i have been poking around this naturallycurly.com site and these people seem to spend a LOT of money and time on their hair. like it's just not that important to me...i want to go back to curly to SAVE styling time.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i am thinking abt adding to my recently lightened hair with tastefully done strawberry blonde highlights/strands soon ooh summertime

yeah devachan has some $180 hairdryer that looks like cthulhu on their site

i mean sure it looks cool...

bell_labs, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link

oh lol the other day i bought a 'microfibre hair towel' in teh dollarstore (for a dollar) thinking it was just a small towel for hair but it is actually a weird turban-like towel and it is kind of hilarious. supposed to be good for curls tho as it gets water out of hair quickly. i don't know. will use it tomorrow morning and report results.

HAAAAA cthulhu hairdryer

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link

ha! they used to sell those turban-towels in the lillian vernon catalogue. i always wanted one!

I'm about to try washing my hair with apple cider vinegar...will report back with the results

bell_labs, Friday, 4 July 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh good! I love that. I'm not sure it's a "wash", though, I think it's more of a "rinse" and then I shampoo and condition afterward. It will apparently strip dye out, though, so it's not useful for colored hair.

Laurel, Friday, 4 July 2008 17:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Lol oops it definitely stripped the dye out of my roots (the only part I dye). Its ok though bc I was going to touch them up next week anyways. So far it has a really weird texture but I'm going to let it dry naturally and see what happens.

bell_labs, Friday, 4 July 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Haha oh no! Oh well. I hope it worked, otherwise -- I always find my hair SO much softer after a vinegar rinse than before.

Laurel, Friday, 4 July 2008 17:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I am getting bangs on Friday!
