great for a dressy-cocktail-y wedding. like i said, i'd wear it to work but that's just me.

lauren, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmmm it would help if the material was not shiny, but it is hard to tell from pic. Anyhow something along these lines that could go both ways would be ace, and I would totally up my spending limit for something I would get more than one or two wears out of.

My office is a business dress downtown DC place and I think I would not have a problem pulling it off for work if done correctly--maybe black tights and oxford pumps and a jacket or cardigan or something.

quincie, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 20:55 (sixteen years ago) link

honestly i don't think it would work w/jacket or cardigan, because of the detail @ shoulder and waist. would be a shame to cover it up. it's a gorgeous dress. i think it'd be hard to wear to work. but surely you might have other dress up occasion to wear it?

daria-g, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Sadly (or perhaps fortunately?) I rarely have a dress-up functions to attend. But I am finding hope there is probably a dress out there--if not this one--that can do double-duty and thereby justify the expenditures required to get something really beautifully designed and made, in a really good fabric.

quincie, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 12:38 (sixteen years ago) link

btw I miss you guys

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

quince, that dress comes in a lot of other colors and fabrics -- that was just the one I liked the best (plus some of the other fabrics are more expensive). I think the shoulder detail is, yeah, more of the problem with putting something over it, but maybe something UNDER it for cooler weather, a micro-stretch long-sleeved top in black or a rich color to give it sleeves? Matched to tights? Or one of the angular not-cardigans that are around this fall, something that doesn't close in front and just drapes? Ah well.

I hope you DO get it, because god knows I can't! Could def wear to work in NYC, but then people are crazy here.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I think that dress would be great for work. In the past couple of years I've become reluctant to show my tattoos in the office leaving so many cute dresses out of the question without a jacket/cardigan. :(

Susan, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

god seriously i am thinking how perfect that dress would be for an event i may be attending in a few weeks and swooooon i could never fit into it or afford it!

tehresa, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago) link

i will put a cardigan over pretty much anything, but probably not that dress. unless it was a non-traditional cardi, as laurel says.

tehresa, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

but maybe something UNDER it for cooler weather, a micro-stretch long-sleeved top in black or a rich color to give it sleeves?

laurel, you and IN-STYLE magazine are on the same page here (i bought the sept issue yesterday. first fashion mag i've bought in a while. but uma was on the cover, no way to resist)

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Hm it must be something in the air.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

My mom was looking at a Lucky mag in the salon yesterday and when did it get horrible? I liked it when it was basically a catalog of what was for sale this year, now it's like "Six skin tips you really need" and retarded.

Laurel, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

InStyle is great. I have to get into the tights mindset. Wear-ability still so far off though.

Susan, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

i try to avoid wearing totally sleeveless things because of tattoo issues, but excessive air-conditioning in the summer and cold winters mean that some kind of cover-up is usually possibly.

btw - welcome back, s (if you're who i think you are).

lauren, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago) link

OK I think we should purchase the uber-dress and then just send it around to share. I need dibs on Nov. 21.

Def. way more than I have ever spent on any item of clothing, ever. Like it is three times as much as the dress in which I got married!

Sisterhood of the Traveling Lam?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 28 August 2008 01:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually though I bought a black crepe Ellen Tracy at a discount store this summer, and wore it to be a bridesmaid AND it would have been my interview dress had I had one this summer. It still could, with a jacket. Pretty much any of those Talbot's-y tailored dresses could work, depending on yr preference. The P Lam is leagues nicer, of course!

i wish i had more opportunity to wear dresses. my mom surprisingly picked a really nice one for me for xmas - black, cowl neck, thin belt, sister described as a "hot for teacher" look - and i wore it to work the other day and ppl were all 'omg u so dressed up today!' maybe i am reverting to pre-women's lib or something but how come you can't wear a dress w/out it being a big deal?

tehresa, Monday, 6 July 2009 11:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Fucking WANT that Mad Men dress, plus I probably have like 5 scarves that would go with it. Also wearing scarf to fill in the neck of dress is GENIUS AND I WILL TRY IT ASAP.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Monday, 6 July 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, that dress is pretty great. Laurel, I thought of you immediately when I saw it earlier.

some american borad (ENBB), Monday, 6 July 2009 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I really love that it's ACTUALLY ALL WRINKLED from sitting at a desk in it all day, because that is what HAPPENS to dresses, especially ones made of linen as that appears it might be.

xp hahah. Thanks!

Is Mad Men starting on a third season? What an interesting mix of mod and linen.

i love looking at all of those dresses

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 06:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Awww modcloth.com sundresses are cute. They're not very mod, but apparently that's beside the point. They're like a slightly less well designed but disproportionately MUCH MUCH CHEAPER version of Anthropologie.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I love that site.

I recently got and am wearing this dress right now:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/dress-1.jpg

In fact I've worn it oh about 3 times in the last week. It fits like a dream is so easy to wear and is so light it feels like I'm not wearing anything. In this heat that's important! It's a little more hippie-ish than I normally go for but I love it. Also, the colors are awesome.

ENBB, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Quick glance at first page suggests that the dresses that are actually way mod are also priced around $170, which isn't actually cheaper than Anthropologie. But hey! Dresses!

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Omg I want both of these:

LOL Laurel looking at the prices those must have been the ones you just saw.
