i know right?!? i'm always a little nervous about flashing my underwear when i'm wearing anything above the knee, and i thought about a cotton petticoat but then i came across these on etsy and was totally sold.

v cute, j!
i am also incorporating a ton more dresses into my wardrobe for summer because it is so hot and gross here. office clothes are gross for commuting but dresses are a little easier. i found some good deals at ross.

Bloomers! Cute.

yeah i usually prefer pants, or tights/leggings with dresses but i wore the red dress today (which i got at the modcloth sale for $15 awhile back!) with a cute/cheap white lil' cardi from target (i love target - i got 4 of these cardies bc they were so perfect, elbow length to hide fat arms and a little shorter so good with loose dresses) and it was so terribly hot, i would normally be feeling like shit but dang i was comfortable and happy!
― just1n3, Sunday, 6 June 2010 03:42 (fourteen years ago) link
I feel the same about short dresses! You don't always FEEL exposed, but god forbid you sit down on the subway, because you have to see other women's underwear across from you to realize how much YOU are probably showing. Petticoats imo are most useful for keeping dresses from sticking to your sweaty legs and ass -- the outer layer of the dress doesn't stick and then you don't have to tug on your skirt when you stand up. It's not nec more comfortable (because the petticoat still sticks to you) but it's like 90% more discreet.

Too add: petticoats are most useful for loose-skirted dresses that reach below the knee. For short skirts, I favor a pair of cut-off tights to prevent jiggling and rubbing.

oh man the other day my dress kept blowing up against my thighs when i walked making me feel very awkward and exposed. it was SO annoying. what is diff btw petticoat and a half slip? ruffles?
― tehresa, Sunday, 6 June 2010 19:42 (fourteen years ago) link
No, they're the same! "Slips" in this country tend to be polyester knits which cling a hell of a lot and are really hot -- really what you want is a cotton or non-slinky underskirt half-slip.
A full-slip is the kind that has bra-ish straps and hangs from the shoulder, I mostly hate that kind.
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Sunday, 6 June 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link
...because I don't have very square shoulders, so straps fall down. If you have swimmer/gymnast shoulders and things stay up for you, maybe a half-slip is the way to go.

Got this and I'm wearing it today. Isaac for Target, lol. It has a huge, stiff crinoline layer that keeps the skirt sticking out.

Wonderful! That, to my mind, is the perfect summer dress: cool and loose and allows for sitting on the ground without discomfort.

Also very very accessorisable.
I thought at first that you wrote "SPITTING on the ground," and later, "accessible."

And "Only jewelry".
i know, the waist really makes it less cute!

Oooh I like Roxy's dress a lot and the etsy dress is <3. I didn't think Issac was doing Target clothes anymore.
I have bought jewelry and an apron from Etsy just arrived in the mail today but I've never bought actual clothes from there.

So much so that I kind of wish it was an actual skirt. Man, I should learn how to sew.
Lovely! The use of aprons is a weird thing. My mom used to have hand-embroidered ones handed down in the family, and I remember her making a beautiful one with a lot of pieces and a hand-smocked panel in the bib. But they are specifically for wearing OVER YOUR NICE SUNDAY DRESS while cooking for a special occasion or Sunday dinner. And the apron itself is supposed to be nice enough not to downgrade the dress/occasion, or else you'd just tie a big white sheet over yourself. So it's like: dress up in something that's inappropriately fancy for a messy activity. Then cover the inappropriately fancy item with another inappropriately fancy item to protect it.
Underlining all this pretense, of course, is the idea that a true mistress of the kitchen never gets anything on herself anyway, so both the clothing AND the fancy apron are equally safe.

What a great apron! I loved the mid-kate 90s apron dress over jeans/pants trend. I think aprons are so flattering because you get to cinch the waist. Also lovve that dress horseshoe posted!

good lord those are nice dressesi esp like the top one -- imagine the accessory possibilities!
honestly, dresses like that are worth a little $$ imo -- it could look like a dozen different dresses depending on what you wear with it.

i just got back from a sweaty bike ride downtown, so summer is wearing a little thin on me atm

A Bettie Page dress store opened recently here, and I kind of got obsessed with this dress:http://www.jbrclothing.com/v/vspfiles/photos/CURVESGREY-2.jpg
although they didn't have my size and it's sold out everywhere online. Stupid really, I have a beautiful Stop Staring dress (possibly my favourite dress) that I don't have much occasion to wear, so pointless buying a similar one...

Omg I almost bought that from tj maxx at Christmas! But the only one they had was a size too small. Like!

i adore cowl neck stuff too. this didn't have a hip measurement so i'm a little worried about it being too small - usually hip measurements are only a few inches wider the waist and my hips are... 30% bigger.
i will post results in a week!
btw this is on modcloth for under $55 incl shipping
