^ That's my problem too. It's not so much the length I dislike it's how unstructured and boring it mine looks right now.

ENBB was the person who told you this male or female? if it was a dude, i think you should feel free to disregard. /sexist

guys tend to have weird hang-ups about long hair.

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Mandee - it was a dude, yeah.

Lauren - yeah I know that's what I was thinking.

That's it - next weekend it gets chopped.

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

ugh yes with the guys/long hair

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

srsly. i hear they also like bangs. cept for the one time a guy in a bar said he would date any girl there who did not have bangs (everyone had hipster bangs).

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

they also are the number #1 offenders in curly hair hate crimes

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i have also noticed they tend to be magnetically attracted to blondes. yuck. (sorry to offend any blondes, it just gets old sometimes).

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

haha, bell - totally!

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post. Really? Most of my male friends (not to mention my own RS) all have a preference for dark hair.

yeah, this is what i meant

horseshoe, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

but they don't even mean it; all these dudes told me not to cut my hair and then i did and they liked it.

horseshoe, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

okay i guess maybe they were lying to be polite, but still. it was the right decision!

horseshoe, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

woah - I don't know why I called you Mandee! I saw the ho. . . and assumed it was homo . . . Sorry horseshoe!

ENBB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i think the bangs thing is true, but i kind of get it. i tend to really like bangs on people too. they look moronic on me because i have curly wispy hair and have a cowlick in the middle of my head but still, i keep at it.

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

lol it's okay i find it flattering to be taken for Mandee. your hair is v. pretty, btw, judging from the wdyll thread!

horseshoe, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, it's odd. some guys will defend long hair to the death, but there seems to be a bit of a disconnect between theory and practice.

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, even though you seem to worry about it lots on here, i think it always looks vv pretty!

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

OMG I REMEMBER THAT GUY who wouldn't date girls with bangs. He was...kind of otm in that situation, though, as I recall.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah he was. though i felt bad bc i have bangs!

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh iirc rrrobyn and jbr were also present that evening!

tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

anyway, enbb, i like to look at mahogany's (where i got my hair did in the uk) web site for inspiration when i'm bored. how about this:

lauren, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

was it in brooklyn? around christmas time a couple years ago? was my brother there? if so, then i was there. i don't remember this guy saying stuff about bangs. i don't think i had bangs at the time. i feel like i don't even have bangs now, just, like, a lot of hair that happens to go over my forehead.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

enbb wld look good in a haircut like that

nabisco, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

It was at Daddy's, that's all I remember. I didn't think it was a time when rrrob's brother was around but I must be forgetting something.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I have nothing else to contribute, what with not really having hair. But I will say that guy comments on hair can be ... somewhere between open-minded and fickle, which is to say that if you have long hair we may sincerely say "oh, that looks so beautiful, don't cut it, it's so nice!" and then if you cut it the next day we may look at that and sincerely say "oh hey, that looks great, you look so different and awesome." Like I think it has less to do with lack of sincerity or lack of judgment and more to do with just going with the flow and not thinking too critically and liking whatever happens to be going on.

nabisco, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Newsflash: straight guys like girls, not too fussed about the particulars.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

my little sis was also there - she made fun of me for le bangs.

Umm I don't think that's it at all, Laurel

It's possible that men just have a narrower range of hair options and so we're just not as practiced at conceptualizing big changes and different ways a single haircut can be worn and all that, so there's more likelihood of just seeing things and going "that looks great!" -- kind of like people who don't know what kinds of clothing cuts will suit who, but once it's on will find you magically looking better

sunny successor, Thursday, 7 August 2008 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Wow I really like that haircut Lauren!! I wonder if it would work. I think I'm going to serioulssy think about printing that out and ask my hair dresser next week. Thank you!!

ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 02:46 (fifteen years ago) link

you're welcome! i hope it works for you.

lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i really think you should go for it, e!

i am officially over my hair today. keep wearing it up bc it looks so crappy. down today but even after a brief blow dry it's looking idiotic again because of the heat/commute. how do all these people keep their hair so perfect while commuting in the summer? it boggles me. since i told myself i would grow it out and i never last this long, i may keep growing but dye it (which i haven't done since december). also i wish it would be less hot so i can have the cool fringe bangs again bc i combed them that way this morning and liked it but they completely cover my eyes right now and it's too hot to keep them looking good. ugh. i feel vain right now.

tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:26 (fifteen years ago) link

also i realized this am that i am in flat iron withdrawal but it is just too hot to deal with that + blow dryer right now.

tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey rrrobyn (or anyone else who remembers), iirc you got some kind of bitchin' hairdryer a while back. what kind was it again?

sunny successor, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:33 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh yeah and bell what was that straightener-dryer thing you got and how is it working out?

tehresa, Monday, 11 August 2008 14:36 (fifteen years ago) link

this is the one i have, sunny - elchim pro - not that i have even turned it on in the last couple of months... lol summer hair

rrrobyn, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

do you love it?

sunny successor, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

i hate the flat iron i got, i think it has ruined my hair. i have never had so many split ends. it's this one here:
http://www.overstock.com/Health-Wellness/Turbo-Ions-Croc-Wet-to-Dry-Flat-Iron/2387100/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=10623869

i never really use it on wet hair because it makes a sizzling noise that scares me. it worked fine for a couple of weeks but since i have been using it the texture of my hair has actually become more coarse.

bell_labs, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i miss the crappy old iron that i have, which i think worked well with my hair because it didn't get as hot. now even all of the cheap ones at the drugstores advertise that they get super, super hot. so i'm not really sure what i should use.

bell_labs, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:39 (fifteen years ago) link

I think a lot of them have dials where you can turn the temp to where you like it.

sunny successor, Monday, 11 August 2008 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

mine has a digital heat setting - but the lowest heat it allows is 290 degrees, which is apparently still too hot for my hair.
