I'm tempted to get mine done professionally, but oh the $$$. I've got so much gray that I end up with highlight/lowlight effects with a level 3 all over color.

anyone ever had aveda color? i can go to the institute here and get it done cheaper than if i went to a real salon. i'm not too worried about a student messing up a single process color, but i don't think aveda is esp. known for their color, either...

high-denisty?! lols. can't they just say "thick"?

But what if you just had one strand of hair that weight 34 lbs.

Feria (at least when I tried the black and blonde 6-7 years ago) is utter garbage, and I am shocked and dismayed to hear that Hydrience has been discontinued :( I have been having my hair professionally dyed (bright colours) right now but when I was a blonde I was a Hydrience girl. :(

the kerastase ciment thermique is doing very good things for my hair.

bell_labs, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:14 (fifteen years ago) link

cool!

i think i may take the plunge and book a dying appt!

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:17 (fifteen years ago) link

me too. mainly because i am afraid of damaging my hair more with at-home dying! though, i'm not sure if professional dying is any better for your hair? all i know is that i have 92435945 broken hairs by my crown and i don't know what is causing them to break.

bell_labs, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:19 (fifteen years ago) link

my hair dye is organic supposedly, and my hair doesn't seem to be any worse than it ever was... I am not one to talk about smooth hair as I bleached it for five years and still blowdry/straighten but my hair is so nice and soft and lovely... though my ends are fading, may be time for a trim again, ugh.

here is a sort of press release thing from the people who make the dye my hairdresser uses:

Goldwell's Elumen Hair Color
Jayne Morehouse
Date: 2/6/2002

Introduction

One of the most exciting new technological developments in professional hair color is the new Goldwell Elumen. Now, there's more to share. Elumen is the first oxidant-free durable hair color that works without peroxide or ammonia. Using a purely physical process, Elumen's brilliant, direct-acting, negatively-charged color dyes are drawn deep inside the positively-charged hair shaft and held, as if by a magnet. But there's truly no fear, no commitment. With Elumen Return, the hair colorist can remove the hair color immediately and gently with no damage simply by reversing the magnetic charge.

What's more, Elumen repairs hair, smoothing porous and damaged sections not only on the surface, but deep inside the hair shaft, providing a healthy, smooth surface that reflects light brilliantly.

Elumen's new technology offers many "firsts," giving you a truly new story about hair color. Deborah Gavin, the creative colorist from High Tech Hair Studio and Spa in Philadelphia and the spokesperson for Goldwell's Elumen, is a great new source on Elumen, new color trends and technologies, and caring for colored hair at home.

Remember, only Goldwell, the worlds' largest professional haircare company, offers this new patented technology.

semi-permanent hair dyes are supposed to actually be good for you hair - they don't contain all the harsh chemicals that permanents have, and they condition the hair. i used to exclusively use permanent hair dye (i've always dyed my own), but am now on the semi stuff.

which reminds me: time to dye again

i bought the Kiss My Face shampoo that jaq suggested and used it today and it didn't bother my scalp and my hair didn't get dried out or anything! wows
we'll see what happens with future use

rrrobyn, Thursday, 21 August 2008 19:24 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't think there is gonna be a drastic difference in damage-ness from box to salon unless your salon uses some really fancy product. i want to go because i have too much hair that i can't see and worry about missing random spots (which i have been known to do) and sometimes feel like they have better colors?

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i want to dye my hair i think and i can't bring myself to pay $70 for single process application. anyone know of a good demi/semi-perm dye? i am really nervous about this bc i am afraid i am going to miss lots of strands and then have that weird half-assed look.

tehresa, Monday, 25 August 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

what do you guys think of me dyeing my hair the magenta/hot pink colour of the flowers on my shirt here?
http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-snc1/v320/224/57/516053577/n516053577_748176_3823.jpg

Also that shirt is my new favourite! I got it at H&M and it makes me feel excessively girly and pretty. It's got a little cutout hole at my cleavage and two long pieces of fabric you can sort of tie.

Finefinemusic, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

but I have been kind of wanting lately to self-dye my hair again because I always hear people talk about how they died their bright blue hair themselves, etc.. but I don't know how and the concept of toner and 30 vol and whatever else you need to know sounds too difficult.

Finefinemusic, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:37 (fifteen years ago) link

ffm, i love your current colour! and that shirt is ultra cute.

i have been trying a drastically new thing with my hair... only washing it every second day! i've shampooed/conditioned every day since i was about 13, and ppl/hairdressers have been telling me for years that i have to stop and at least cut down to alternate days. but i've never been able to - my head itches and it feels greasy and i hate the smell. but i've managed to do it for two weeks now! and it's getting less greasy btw washes. and now that i'm not *really* a smoker, it doesn't have that awful smell.

Rubyredd, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

RR, my scalp/hair is so much healthier since I stopped shampooing every day, it's hard to believe. I shampoo maybe once a week now, rinse really well every day in the shower, treat the ends w/ jojoba maybe every 2 weeks. I had been doing dry shampoo of oats/baking soda initially but found it wasn't necessary.

Jaq, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

finefinemusic, maybe it's my monitor, but the magenta looks more of a dusty rose on my screen. I love the bright color you've got now. fwiw, my daughter tried to go bright teal on her own (her hair's naturally a dark blonde), and it just never worked satisfactorily. Dull undertones and leached out really fast.

Jaq, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

It does have a touch of dusty rose to it, hmmmm.. I can't find a picture but I used to have magenta hair in high school and LOVED it. because I went from orange to red, my hairdresser mixed orange into the dye last time to even out the roots, and as it fades it gets orangier and orangier :P maybe I will give "red" another shot to give it a chance to fade more normally next time...

I found a picture of myself with manic panic teal hair in high school! heh. didn't last long though and I remember I used to sleep with hair dye on my head and saran wrap over top, on a pillow covered in a couple of shopping bags. whee!

Finefinemusic, Friday, 29 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

jaq: my scalp had been itchy on and off, and that has also lessened HEAPS since i cut down on washing it. i give a good brush before i jump in the shower and then i just rinse it really well. i also started using a trader joe's sls-free shampoo when i got to the US.

I need a haircut v v badly. There is a fabu gay man who lives down the street from me who cuts hair at his home in exchange for doing yard work for him or whatever. I think I might give him a shot. His name is "J0hn Cava1ier".

guy cannot cut my hair right now b/c he is fighting w/his boyfriend.

i like that haircut but i think it's too old for you, tbh. by which i guess i mean, my mom has that haircut. but my mom is super cute and fairly hip to things and gets her hair cut at the cuetest little aveda salon in t0fino. it's a great haircut, just maybe not right now?

yeah, that's something to consider! I went to the bathroom a few mins ago and I was sort of contemplating my hair and I realized that my Insane Cowlick of Doom would prevent the hair from properly going against my face anyway, damn the cowlick of doom!

I think I am going to do something about my username, I realized it's very googleable the other day and sometimes I forget I'm on a public board and I run off my mouth haha

I am putting together a birthday and Christmas list for my boyfriend, and searched CHI on Amazon. I have always heard that they are $200 but they are on sale right now for $80 - am I wrong about something? I am pretty sure my current flatiron is one inch but it seems.. too good to be true?

http://www.amazon.com/Farouk-CHI-Inch-Ceramic-Hairstyling/dp/B0009V1YR8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1222360698&sr=8-1

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

you can usually get them on overstock for $100, so $80 isn't too much of a stretch. that's a good deal, though. i wonder if they're about to bring out a redesigned product or something along those lines.

lauren, Thursday, 25 September 2008 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I feel like past experience has taught me that overstock hates Canada, but I'll check them out too for other birthday ideas ;) I may just have to order this CHI though...

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:00 (fifteen years ago) link

oh FFS, the CHI can't be shipped to Canada for whatever bullshit reason. :(

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

.....but Overstock proudly announces at the top of their page... Now Shipping to Canada! Theirs is about $90CA which is lovely. Lauren, you've come through for me again!

Bright Future (sunny successor), Friday, 26 September 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i am thinking of getting my hair dyed with a little red added in. nothing tooo shocking, but i think i might be ready for some color to warm things up a bit? i am bored.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Friday, 26 September 2008 23:19 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmm...i go the opposite in winter - away from the warm colors. dark hair is difficult.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Saturday, 27 September 2008 00:51 (fifteen years ago) link

winter:

What are the Cool Tone Colors?

Jewel, blues, greens, pinks, purples, blue greens, magentas, blue based reds.

What are the Warm Tone Colors? Earth tones, yellows, oranges, browns, yellowish greens, orange based reds.

So now that you know the terminology, let's see how you can choose the best color for you!
Blonds
With grey and silver playing a dominant role it is important to tone down the gold in your hair. The sun and beach in the summer always pulls out the golds and yellows in high lights and blond hair so it is time to pack that away with the summer clothes and bring it up to speed. Opt for ash toners and silver undertones in the blond. You don't want to 'grey' the hair but these tones can make the hair whiter and brighter to add softness to the now paleing skin. If you are adding highlights and lowlights keep this same effect in process. It also doesn't hurt to play with biege tones as well. Some women with peachy skin tones may find that the ash is too dulling. Keep in mind that the fashion colors are bold, so softness around the face will leave the beholders eyes to linger over the whole package, and not get distracted.

Cool Ladies - Opt for Ash blond, Icy blond, Pearl blond, Beige blond. If you are chossing a color by number, look for numbers with zero, one, or eleven in the title (ex. 9/11 or 10/1 or 8/0) The number after indicates the tone and these numbers are blue or green aditives.

Warm Ladies - Golden blond, Golden Beige blond, Honey, Milkshake. Look for numbers with 2, 3, 4 (ex. 9/02, 10/23, 8/4)

Brunettes
A dark shade hair with these hard colors in fashion can be tricky, but can also act as the best finish when done right. Look out for too much warmth in your color (ex. reds, eggplant, copper). Browns can look red very easily; especially as the color fades, so keep the darkness in cool tones.
If you are having the color done professionally ask the colorist to use a clear toner over the color. The toner will add great shine to the color without making it feel matte.
This time of the year it is best for brunettes to hold the richness in their colors. If you are thinking about adding highlights I would advise to keep the highlight only a shade lighter than the base. You will still get the demension from the highlight but this will keep the color looking rich.

Cool Ladies - Natural brown, Dark brown, Coffee, Cocoa. Look for numbers that are odd except without 3 at the begining (ex. 4/11, 5/01, 4/77).

Warm Ladies - Chocolate, Hazelnut, Chestnut. Look for even numbers ( 4/64, 4/14, 5/02).
Red Heads
You are so lucky when deep wines and purples are the upcoming trend. Don't fear ladies, you can sport your red locks and still look great in this season's fashions. If you are a red head stay away from copper or blond highlights; keep your color strong. Eliminate orange and copper undertones, if the red is pure or stlighlty dipped with purple undertones it will compliment the fashion colors the best. There is no need to think you have to completely make your red eggplant, because it will actually overpower the colors of fall and leave you looking pale and washed out. Keep the red powerfull and you will look great this season.

Cool Ladies - Magenta, Eggplant/Aubergine, RR-Red red, Blood red, Ruby red. Look for numbers or letters. The numbers will always have one even and one odd or will be double with red ( ex. 8/66, RR, RV, RB, 6/54, 5/36)

Warm Ladies - Fire red, Copper red, Candy red, RC- red copper, R-red, C-copper, CR-copper red. Look for numbers that are even and letters will never repeat (ex. 6/23, 4/44, 7/6, RC, R, C, CR)

I know with this seasons cool wardrobe hitting the shelves, you think it will be hard to pull off the fashion when your a warm girl. If you stick to wearing the lighter shades of cool tones around your face it will actually compliment the warmth in your skin tone.
For example never wear black too close to your face, breack it up with a grey or ivory. Warm tones tend to look drained or tired with pure white so opt for the ivory or cream. All greys look good on warm ladies as well as all browns so mix and match the fashion to include these tones and you can look fantastic just like the cool girls.

man i love beige blonde

Bright Future (sunny successor), Saturday, 27 September 2008 14:44 (fifteen years ago) link

my natural coloring is actually cool. i think when i said i want to warm things up i meant, any hint of red (i would probably stay in the cooler reds) would give me a little more warmth than my current pale skin + brunette look.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I got some birthday money so I am getting highlights today from Le!gh at Wh!stle. She suggested going super-blonde but I am afraid of the fakery so am opting for something more subtle to start out. She also gave me a shorter bob with whispy bangs that seems less flat than my previous bedraggled look though one of my young library patrons was not impressed.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link

go for the super-blond! it would look good on you.

lauren, Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i think it would really look good, too! and if it is just highlights it won't be too much of a shock all at once.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

haha! I am just afraid of looking like a typical Upper East Sider with a fake blonde bob, but in my stylist's hands perhaps I would look more like a Dutch child? oh no--the indecision. she also said the super blonde would be more maintenance (mo money)

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 27 September 2008 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

virginia plain i have no ida what you look like but i think everyoen should go superblonde at least once in their life so they know what its like

Bright Future (sunny successor), Saturday, 27 September 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

plus its blonde so it easy to come back from if you hate it
