well, one of the women who wears tailored shorts dresses like she's going to a nightclub. poufy hair, animal prints, those weird sheer tunics that are short in the front and long in the back...she's kind of a freak of nature.

but yeah there's a few women who wear them and I just can't handle how much leg they show. They're freaking MID THIGH ffs.

Gah, I was hoping there would be a picture of the dress I got without my stupid face getting in the way, but this seems to be one of the only ones. I really really like the dress. I like me a lot less.

that fabric looks amazing

Yeah the fabric looks very cool!

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

The fabric is actually old curtains. The girl who makes the dresses basically works with discarded stuff, so it's mostly sustainable dress-making...

emil.y, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 03:36 (twelve years ago) link

That's a great dress and you (and your face) look gorgeous!

carl agatha, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link

That looks pretty sharp! Glad you were able to get that made :)

***curtains*** ***dress***
that is fantastic
that is speaking to a deep part of me
my high school fashion ambition was to dress entirely in textiles from a grandma's house – crocheted afghan, green and orange brocade, and curtains like that!

The Equalizer Busy Equalizing (Crabbits), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 13:13 (twelve years ago) link

that is speaking to a deep part of me
me too -- maria
(not so much singlehandedly taking care of 7 bratty kids or the falling in love with a drill sergeant, but definitely the curtains!)

beautiful dress, em
the face is merely ok ;)

emil.y, what a great dress! and your face is srsly great even when you're sort of making a face! (pictures: 1/500th of a second of yr life/self, sometimes less!)

two weeks pass...

I have been on a dress-buying FRENZY this week (ie I bought 2 dresses).
One is this one which is the only dress I have with a bouffy-ish skirt and they normally look ridic on me so I'm wondering if I've made a huge mistake.
http://www.yumidirect.co.uk/women/dresses/betty-floral-dress.html

Except it's creamier & slightly less vivid colour? And soft cotton not polyester, and almost knee-length. And the buttons are fabric-covered.

kinder, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

both are comfy for work, which I'm depressed to say is now apparently what I look for in a dress.

kinder, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

those of you who are of 'available' size and who have access to cheap dry cleaning should get these imo:

is there a thread on ils for secondhand shopping?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:47 (twelve years ago) link

If not there should be. I suck at thrifting. In fact, I haven't actually really done it since HS when I was all about going to church thrift shops for hideous printed polyester button down shirts. I am extremely intimidated by them now mostly because it seems like you have to wade through aisles of craps to find the gems and I don't have a lot of patience for that. Anyway, if there isn't then you should start one.

One hundred percent of that dress is a Victorian little girl's day dress remade for adult women. The infantilization is amazing.

kinder, Friday, 21 September 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

i thought we talked about pettipants on this thread but couldn't find it ANYWAY i bought a pair and they are the best - way better than the bloomers i had, which were too bulky under a lot of my dresses (and too short) and way better than a regular petticoat/slip bc there is virtually no way to flash anyone, anything, accidentally or even on purpose (if that's your thing)

and i really want this for winter:
