always find myself walking behind some business man wearing one a swiss army backpack, on both shoulders of course, a suit, and fugly trainers.

i think its the rigidness of the hardfoam laptop compartment that really makes backpacks look bad

always used to be strictly backpack-on-one-shoulder but when I did my knee in a few years ago (which my legs never quite recovered from) I had to admit that it's a lot easier to walk with a backpack on both shoulders

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

Backpacks a) are ugly, and b) prohibit you from getting out any of your stuff until you get to A Place. Phone, cigarettes, keys, whatever, I am gonna need that shit before I get to the office. No dice.

b) prohibit you from getting out any of your stuff until you get to A Place.

waht

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

Because you have to get it off your back and hold it up to open it, it's really clumsy to get anything out while you're walking or in a crowded place. NB I go for crossbody bags mostly so that's where I am coming from.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:25 (twelve years ago)

i think most bags that hang off your body whether backpack or messenger can look kinda silly, briefcases are probably the way to go but it can get tiring

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

mine has a little pouch on the top that's like a secret fanny-pack, can usually get stuff out of it by just throwing the bag over a diff shoulder

ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

the problem is as soon as you need to carry anything more than a laptop and a few files (water bottle, lunch, change of clothes), a biefcase doesnt work

ְ֮֠֓֟֬֩ (gr8080), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

yeah for sure.... at that point i just hire a porter

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

I guess that's a problem if you have the shoulder straps super tight but if you wear them loose, you can remove one shoulder strap and swing the bag around to the front to go through it; I've worn backpacks for approx. 30 out of my 35 years of bag-carrying and have never had a problem getting things out of them mid-transit

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

Yeah my pref for looks is the one-handed duffel or bowling or bucket bag, doesn't pull your clothes around etc, but they're inefficient because you can't up the weight when you have to hand-carry.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

yeah but youve never had a lady style bag so you dont know how much easier it could be xp

lag∞n, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

backpack w/ a suit is particularly invidious... youre ruining the lines of your suit & your silhouette, gentlemen

乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

tru confession, i have one of those hideous swiss army backpacks, i used to have a laptop shoulder bag until it fucked up my back and jaw real good one day. i'm up for something nicer-looking in theory but only if it won't destroy my body

Things I hate include when I am standing in a queue (e.g. a bus queue) and I take my backpack off my shoulder to get something out (e.g. the bus passes which the bus company helpfully makes too big to go in a wallet) and the person behind me moves up into the space my backpack was in and is going to go back into in 10 seconds

susuwatari teenage riot (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:36 (twelve years ago)

oh that is secretly great because you get to hit a big dummy with your backpack

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

that is another thing is that people w backpacks take up twice as much space and are generally oblivious as to the fact that they are doing so, worth considering who the big dummy is in the situation really

lag∞n, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:40 (twelve years ago)

i mean really are you entitled to the space yr backpack use to be in

I fucking love backpacks. Seriously, they are one of my favorite things ever. I loved backpacks as a kid and getting a new one was like one of the best things. I tried to use a more adult bag a few years ago and felt like such a tool I went back to my backpack. I'll never stray again.

I have a TSA friendly one, which is super handy.

Jeff, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

backpack pro move for switching from shoulder to hand: carry on one shoulder, causally drop shoulder and let strap slide down arm into your hand. pull hand sharply up and let go of backpack, then catch it again by the top handle. this move provided for free, check more moves at backpackpromoves.com

I bought a stylish Converse pack last year for its looks and it makes me crazy that it's unwaxed cotton canvas that sticks to clothes and doesn't slide on and off easily, and that the cute retro metal zipper teeth stick and take two hands to zip up. I'm buying an ugly functional one next time.

that skagen backpack is nice, i am having a super difficult time finding one in black without a bunch of stuff going on.

bought an APC backpack a few weeks ago but it had giant silver buckles that looked shiny/terrible in person.. returned.. bought one from want les essentiels on sale and it's too big and boxy for me, returned. still looking. i want something i can take to work because my work tote bag is pretty old. and i hate 99% of all women's bags and purses especially ones with any kind of logo or hardware or stuff going on, but i also don't want it to be made of cheap looking material. thinking of ordering something from hope stockholm
