I've got a cool jansport that looks like the basic model, but has a special bottom compartment (just looks like the leather lining on the bottom) that unzips to keep drinks cold. it's the best.

i kind of want to get a picnic box but no way in hell would it be a backpack

I have (not kidding) an old LL Bean rucksack made out of olive-green tapestry fabric with leather fastenings. It looks kind of elmo's number if it were made for menopausal women in 1994.

Also I think I ripped the left strap out by doing ledge's slide-and-grab.
those ll beans w the monograms... classic
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:18 (eleven years ago) link
i'm am down with everything about that except the 'tapestry' part xp
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago) link
The tapestry is almost conceptual, it's just drab-green and silver leaves, over and over. I think. It's in storage in some high place because I can't throw it away: it's in perfect cond except for the ripped strap, it will NEVER EVER wear out, and my mother gave it to me.

monogrammed ll beans were absolutely de rigeur at prep school, sometimes slung hobo-style from the end of a lacrosse or field hockey stick, sometimes embellished with flowers & big loopy handwriting in white-out pen
― ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago) link
i never had an ll bean pack, tho

I think I'll wait until I'm feeling a little more menopausal.

protip llbean backpacks are guaranteed for life, ive heard talk of people picking up ragged ones used and bringing them to bean and they give them a new one

I had a Muji backpack that was awesome and was thinking about getting a Herschel one for travel and stuff because they're functional but simple and plain and not ugly.

muji backpacks are nice but can feel a bit cheap depending on how low u go

Is there something that sorta resembles them but better quality that you know of? They just did a polka dot one for Madewell and it's SO CUTE. I want it.
― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago) link
But, yeah, they're kinda expensive for what they are, I think.
enbb:

made in the USA in a LEED certified factory

i didnt read any of the posts in this thread but i like backpacks a lot, because you can put stuff in them and carry them around while keeping your hands free
they are not that aesthetically pleasing though i guess thats the downside... but what upside!
― Reggie (Lamp), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 16:17 (eleven years ago) link
x-post - I'm into the daypack but they need more colors or dots or something. They're all very manly. Not that there's anything wrong with that but I think they should branch out a little or something.

also one time i was at a karaoke night for a friend's birthday and this kinda overweight nerdy kid sang something really jammy for karaoke while wearing his black canvas backpack and it made me really happy because he looked like such a dork and he seemed like he just dngaf and then later that night i was getting out of a cab to go to a party and i saw that same kid still wearing his backpack and invited him up to the party and told him that i liked his backpack and then apologized for calling him 'backpack' but then the girls who's place it was was really mad at me cuz it turned out this kid looked like he was like 15 and it was supposed to be a cool drug party or w/e and he was obv really uncomfortable w/the whole scene so i had to get him to leave after his first drink but he didnt seem to mind that much
anyway the moral of the story is that backpacks are so cool that they can get you invited to parties but also asked to leave parties
