i have a friend who says she counted and she owned 80 dresses. right after counting she found one that had fallen behind the hamper, bringing the total to 81. each one has a name. the one that had fallen down behind the hamper was called "the unicorn dress," though it does not feature a unicorn.

imagining what it would be like to own over 80 dresses

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago) link

That was me in my 20's and 134 pairs of shoes was a downsize. I don't know if it was 81 dresses but I had more than 56. Contempo, Foleys and vintage, 50 cents per pound, found the on the floor in old warehouse finds from high school.

I think I have at least 40, but most aren't very good. Got another yesterday! Fit and flare style.cream lace with lime lining. Not v flattering for my pink skin tone, but so cute! And cheap (marshal's)

I bought a petticoat today. It's the best. It has a New York City Opera label in it!

A dress I got in a buy one/get one free deal a month ago got it's first wash today and was ruined. The dress was cheap, liked it a lot though. The dye went all splotchy on it. Followed directions. Trashed it which leaves me with three sundresses, 2 "nice dresses" and one fading red linen dress. Time for more dresses.

*tera, Monday, 6 May 2013 02:38 (eleven years ago) link

Ooo red linen. I still cling to my canary yellow linen shirtdress though I will probably never fit into it again.

emilys., Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:02 (eleven years ago) link

That sounds pretty, so don't!

*tera, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 07:05 (eleven years ago) link

I know its not dresses but ive been on the hunt for the perfect, or really a number of perfect, mid length A-line skirts. I found an Issac Mizrahi floral number that that looked pretty good in the photo. As I do, I skimmed the the best and worst comments. Only one wonman gave the skirt a 1 star rating. The reason? 'Its made of some type of weird rubber-like material I've never come across before. I had to return it!'. Rubber?? I though. I went back to check the what the fabric was in the description - 97% Cotton, 3% Spandex. People are crazy.'

What the hell?

carl agatha, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 12:02 (eleven years ago) link

I want all these mid-length A-line skirts. Please post links if you find them!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

But they're made of rubber.

I buy most household linens from Overstock.com because that shit's cheap and idgaf about brands or last season's colors and there is always some ding dong giving sheets one star because they come out of the dryer wrinkled. If wrinkled sheets are an issue for you in 2013, your opinion is irrelevant to me. My mom used to iron sheets and pillowcases (until she was sure I wasn't going to burn my hand off with the iron; then I got assigned that stupid task) and JEANS because she had fucked up priorities, just like those Overstock reviewers.

Anyway, on topic, I've had an eShakti dress bookmarked for a couple of months waiting for the right time to buy and it's out of stock now. Fucking tragic.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 12:18 (eleven years ago) link

rubber skirts! rad

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

I need a-line stuff and how. Another issue: I am 5'3" and have ddd breasts, so normal cap and short sleeves make.my boobs look uncutely mammoth and matronly. Half and 3/4 sleeves balance them out, but it can be very hard to find good dresses with those sleeve-lengths. Also, nothing will button over those guys.

emilys., Thursday, 9 May 2013 09:06 (eleven years ago) link

Anyone ever order from She Inside? I just made the discovery.

emilys: I have been coming across a lot of 3/4 sleeves but now can't remember. Will make a note. Been dress browsing all over the internet.

*tera, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 17:06 (eleven years ago) link

So I ordered a black and white polka dot dress and red shoes to wear to (an ilxor!) wedding. What color shawl and bag should I be going for?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 17:21 (eleven years ago) link

is it black with white dots or vice versa

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago) link

i wanna say red accessories? but i think maybe i get a lil' too matchy-matchy so :/

just1n3, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 05:45 (eleven years ago) link

Was gonna say the exact same thing!

kinder, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 07:16 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I'm thinking all red stuff would be too much red that's why I was thinking black and just leaving the shoes as the one pop of color?

Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 12:58 (eleven years ago) link

OMG this is my dream dress: white pp collar, a-line, just perfect

whoops, sorry

ljubljana, Thursday, 23 May 2013 11:27 (eleven years ago) link

drop waist iirc

JuliaA, Thursday, 23 May 2013 12:17 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, ok. I thought those were the ones where the dress is straight down and then there's a 'waist' below your actual waist?

ljubljana, Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:49 (eleven years ago) link

I...thought so too?

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

ljub, I don't know if that kind of dress has a particular name tbh. It's a fitted bodice with a natural waist and a box-pleated skirt, made of what looks like jersey or another soft fabric?

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

I hope that's you wearing it, because a) it looks like an extremely comfortable and useful dress and could be accessorized any which way, and b) the bedroom in the background looks so light and refreshing that I hope it's yours.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

it looks like my gradeschool uniform jumper, which i always loved the shape of secretly even though i complained about wearing it every day
i have one that's kinda like that that i like to wear blouses underneath but i don't know what it's called either!

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, it is me and my bedroom, which I do like very much! I love the shape and the versatility so will be scouring the internet for something similar. 'Box-pleated skirt', that's what I didn't know how to say.

ljubljana, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

Love it!

*tera, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

whatever it is, cute.

JuliaA, Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:04 (eleven years ago) link

orbit otm, it's just a natural waist. drop waist falls below the hips.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

It's a fitted bodice with a natural waist and a box-pleated skirt, made of what looks like jersey or another soft fabric

This would normally be a 'fit n flare' (in the 90s and also now, apparently) and I'm not sure if that's any different from a 'skater dress' which are normally short.
But I dunno if this is that either!
Schooly ones that you wear blouses under are pinafores

kinder, Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

There are a lot if box pleated dresses on eshakti - I have a green and white gingham sleeveless one with a split neckline, and I just ordered a black one with a shirt style collar. They're also doing a big sale right now and size etc customizations are free!

just1n3, Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

Time to try them, then! FFM, I think you said the duty for Canadian import was variable?...

ljubljana, Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:29 (eleven years ago) link

It is! I'd try one at a time, bulk orders got me dinged with customs fees but I'd often sneak through if I'd only ordered one. Sometimes I didn't though! Can't say I exactly understand customs fees.

I just got this amazing nightgown mumu maxidress - http://www.evansusa.com/wcsstore/Evans/images/catalog/04J46NMUL_large.jpg

I was afraid it would be shapeless, but it's got some nice drape to it and if I put on a belt, I can even wear it to work. Also, it feels like a nightgown.

carl agatha, Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

Aww, that's cute. Bonus that its comfortable!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

To be clear, it is not actually a nightgown. It's supposed to be a dress. It's just a very soft jersey knit. I probably could have gone a size down, but it's not bad enough that I'm going to ship this shit back to England.

carl agatha, Thursday, 23 May 2013 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

Could that dress be called a jumper? I would almost say shift, except I don't think shifts can have waists. xpost

emilys., Friday, 24 May 2013 01:53 (eleven years ago) link

I love those kinds of big flowery red/white patterns on black. Why don't I own any? It is a mystery.

ljubljana, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:53 (eleven years ago) link

First eshakti order placed, after approx two years of dithering and not ordering anything. Three dresses for $145 including shipping to Canada!
