I already had some NBs and I did admittedly stop wearing them for a little while, but then started again. The brand is way too widespread and popular to be exclusively associated with racists. Maybe if they picked FILA or some shit.

At some point, I looked up and caught the man sitting one table over from us Googling Confederate flags. I dismissed it — the cafe sat between two local universities and I figured he was working on a project for class. Later, I looked up again and saw that he’d made the flag his desktop background, angling his screen ever so slightly to face me, as if to make sure I saw. After Sayd and Ellen left for the night, I stayed behind to work. I saw then that the man was wearing a pair of red New Balances that looked recently purchased.
