Loafers: C/D?

After years of ridiculing them, I am now thinking of getting some. Maybe even splash out on the high-flying Tod's variety. What do you say?

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:08 (sixteen years ago)

AAHHHHHHHHH I don't know. My impulse would be to throw myself between anyone I love and a pair of loafers but...maybe that's my own damage talking and there are some -- SOME -- good options for them.

I think they should start by being beat to shit and worn without socks, though.

Laurel, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'm very tempted by these:

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

i can really only endorse loafers utterly devoid of embellishment -- no tassels, no penny loafers, no fringe, no bit

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

i'm wearing a pair of clarks driving mocs right now, which beside a bit of contrast stitching, are just a lovely soft chocolate brown. would reccommend

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

loafers are awesome, and utilitarian. go crazy!

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

Uber Dud, can't get over the cultural signifiers which are universally bad.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

what are the cultural signifiers? comfort? LL bean?

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

More like posh suburban grand-pa, I suppose

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

i like boat shoes more than loafers, but its hard to call shoes this comfortable and timeless "dud"

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

ILS needs to get over its hate for clothing worn by rich people

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

also people who would rep for men's sandals over loafers are kkkrazy i think

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

could you be any more OTM, max?

Kerm, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

They just say upperclass arsehole to me, with tassels on.

xpost

hating rich people with no style is fine by me.

max is now talking crazy talk

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

The tassels are def dud

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

yeah max is pretty much 8080% correct

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

agreed.

ENBB, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

yup

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

ed, its kind of inverse christian sentiment where you hate the sinner but love the sin

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago)

loafers are a gateway drug to polo shirts with popped collars and pink cashmere sweaters.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Polo shirts rock!

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

so do pink cashmere sweaters.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

i'd love to look like this for a day.

ok resume loafers talk now.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

Good look, but he'd look smarter in brogues.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

Other issue with loafers, if youare wearing them as a dress shoe they make your trousers look short.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

get longer trousers?

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

or wear SHORTS!

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

thats part of the appeal! you get to show off your socklessness

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I am officially coming down against the narrow-bodied Italian-style tassel loafers with low vamps that are worn to show off your extra-thin silk dress socks. NO. NO NO NO NO NO BOXCAR

Laurel, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Only time I have worn loafers in recent years was when I was trying suits at brooks brothers and despite my tendency to get my trousers fitted long they still made them look short. (I tend to go with ankle boots of varying descriptions for dress shoes).

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

if i was rich enough to have a lot of suits id have a summer suit with the pants cut just a little short and wear it with loafers and no socks

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

Any discussion of socks makes me think of this:

Father Ted: That's right, Dougal. You see, ordinary shops sell what look like black socks, but if you look closely, you'll see that they're very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue.
Father Dougal: That's true. I thought my Uncle Tommy was wearing black socks, but when I looked at them closely, they were just very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue.
Father Ted: Never buy black socks from a normal shop.
[Whispers to Dougal]
Father Ted: They shaft you every time!

Another thing about loafers, the pope and his red wizards wear them.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but ed you know that nazis wore boots right so you might want to reconsider those

max, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

i need to get some loafers

Mr. Que, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

xxxp Thom Browne once more to the rescue

baaderonixx, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

His mum ought to buy him clothes that he can grow into.

Ed, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

the shrunken suit thing is kinda trendy now because of thom browne but none for me thanks

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i don't love it

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

and by "trendy right now" i mean trendy a year ago with mainstream men's mags only catching up just recently

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

i much prefer the other tom (ford)

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

I have this slight fear that the vogue of slim/shrunken suits (basically "suits that still have the shape of non-suit clothing") will pendulum-swing back toward boxy awful stuffy giant suits.

nabisco, Friday, 1 August 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

(obligatory david byrne reference)

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, i like the fact that suits are becoming recognized as fashionable again, despite my distaste for the current styling

elmo argonaut, Friday, 1 August 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

love penny loafers.. looking for the perfect pair, either black patent.. or maybe oxblood, or cognac.. must have a flat leather sole (no lug sole), and not moccasin style. should be v v classic and simple, and not clunky.

but then i am wearing a polo shirt myself today.. :) some of the style from catholic school, i can't get rid of

daria-g, Friday, 1 August 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

baaderonixx, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

I have however just seen some pretty awesome Repetto "soft shoes" for men

baaderonixx, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

loafers are classic

deej, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

also people who would rep for men's sandals over loafers are kkkrazy i think
