i want to make expectations clear: i really don't think about or complain shoes all THAT much (in the spirit of why spend time criticizing music you don't like, or why bother criticizing something that's just not your thing but is definitely someone else's - even though i do both of those things all the time, whoops), but i hope this thread stands the test of time. like a good boot.

i grew up in the country and did the nature boy thing for most of my childhood. luckily, did not go wook but still not a shoe guy.

i grew up wearing shoes all of the time, even inside. when i would run in the backyard, even the soft grass blades felt like gripping needles ripping through my innocent smooth flesh. but the kid down the block had no problem running barefoot.

fast forward 30 years: i invite my nephew to run around with me in my mom's backyard, and dare him to do it for barefoot. he cannot. the soft grass blades horrify him and he's like a dog wearing boots on top of boots, tip-hopping around. within 10 seconds he's back inside the house, whipping his shoes on.

epilogue:

i started taking my shoes off in early 20s. i love it, and my callouses are strong.
my nephew died of foot punctures. while stepping out of the shower, he accidentally stepped on edge of a nearby newspaper and immediately died of shock.
my mom is currently under investigation for negligent foot raising

part of my childhood country home was a gravel driveway and i somehow convinced myself to "train my body" by walking up and down it barefoot for hours at a time. I remember it being really fucking painful but it eventually worked! It wasn't until I ran on chucks for several years that my arches fell though so i'm not sure what the moral of the story is.

I have to admit slip on shoes are increasingly appealing to me, not because I think they look great but because I give less of a fuck about that aspect.

Also, I kind of want to just have cheap slip ons at each of the entrances to my house at all times now because otherwise it's a pain to go in and out.

the real problem here is feet. you got these perfectly serviceable legs under yr butt and then just past the ankles — i won’t even get into the ankles, fuckin ankles, sheesh — everything goes to hell.
