OK I have several shirts that have been semi-ruined by this shit, and it's gotta stop. I know that you can avoid it by wearing non-aluminum-salted deodorant, but what about removing the stains themselves? I've read a few different things online (including bleach sticks, Borax, baby wipes (alcohol), and enzymatic cleansers) but I haven't tried them yet. Anyone have luck with any particular technique?

Is it deoderant, or just our own sweat? I cannot keep light-colored Tshirts in my possession, after like 5 wearings they'll never be white/baby blue/etc again.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)
And I use some Tom's of Maine hippy shit with MARIGOLDS in it, so....
― Laurel, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
i feel like even if stain removal was achieved, it's still difficult because the sweat/deoderant kind of kills the material.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
According to what I have read it's the reaction of deodorant salts and sweat that does it.
xp yeah exactly, I'm sure some of them are done for good, but I'm going to try anyway

I seem to have found a deodorant that doesn't do this too much -- I'm kind of afraid that one day ten years from now they'll stop making that brand, and I'll cry all over my soon-to-be-dirty shirts. Some deodorants seem insanely bad with this, like not just staining but sometimes bleaching the color out of darker shirts.
― nabisco, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)
so, do you feel like sharing that brand with the class, nabisco?
― tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)
Mitchum for Her is good in this regard.
― felicity, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:00 (seventeen years ago)
Well, I didn't want to presume that what works for me would work for everyone! I mean, it might have to do with your body chemistry or your clothes or something. But it's some kind of Degree, much cleaner-feeling all around.
― nabisco, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
this is true (re: chemistry, etc.), but we like recommendations on ils.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)
nabisco, i seem to remember towga saying the same thing about degree.

also there is some kind of cleaner/brightener they sell at trader joe's that really works on whites/light colors.. it's like oxyclean i guess, but environmentally safe. seems to work well
― daria-g, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:04 (seventeen years ago)
I stopped using deodorant and this problem never happens to me anymore. It probably helps to work in an office that's always 50 degrees.
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
i wear old spice deodorant that is blue, and recently i noticed that if i sweat a lot (which thankfully i dont) when wearing white, i would get blue pit stains, so i've considered getting white deodorant for white shirts and just another colored solid for colored shirts

was out of deodorant and so yesterday bought like 'ultra ultra clear' or whatever name Degree antiperspirant b/c it was on sale and i don't really have great brand loyalty - but this is the first non-unscented deodorant i've bought in ages! i mean, it's lightly scented, but still, it has scent, even if it's a lighter one... but i will say that it's a pretty good antiperspirant considering i did intense yoga class this morning and then biked to work. tho slightly worrisome. but in the winter i wear crystal deodorant and hippie stuff, as if it lessens the chemical effects. lolaz.

i have been using dove and i really don't like it. i feel like it does not really work, which is weird, because i remember really liking it a few years ago.
― tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:11 (seventeen years ago)
i agree with felicity on the mitchum for her. also the secret gel stuff.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)
i don't even understand the point of the white-colored solid deodorant because they ALL seem to do this.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)
has anyone tried that secret clinical strength stuff? sounds intersting, but i worry about all this chemicals.
― tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)
the secret clinical stuff sounds weird. i guess you have to put it on the night before, and it bonds with "night sweat" to plug up the sweat ducts during the day.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)
i don't really like the idea of wearing deodorant to bed
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)
oh that is weird. what happens when you shower in the morning?
― tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know! maybe you aren't supposed to shower? either way, ick.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
yeah that is creepy. i will just take the pit stains, thanks.
― tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
bonds with "night sweat"?? eee yeah i looked at it in the store and yknow, i think my armpits don't need a coating of antiperspirant all the time, but i can see using it for, like, some special occasion where i'm wearing a pretty/expensive dress or shirt and it's a light colour or something.
i remember dove antiperspirant being way better too! this summer it really has had no impact on the sweating. so i tried a secret gel kind, which is just, blarg b/c it has to dry and even then it's sticky and weird feeling and kind of stung. so now, degree.
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)
i like weleda's salt toothpaste. maybe i would like their deodorant (tho i have a feeling it's more of a 'winter deodorant', as above). i guess crystal rock deodorant stuff is really salt deodorant. they should call it that. i don't know why i find it so hilarious. SALT.
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)
i thoguht night sweats were one of those menopausal things ppl tried to avoid...
― tehresa, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)
the problem with the secret gel kind is that they have the worst scents and i haven't been able to find an unscented one. i bought "brazilian cherry" and it smells so gross i have threw it out. the mitchum unscented stuff is great though.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
except, i would like a little scent to mask my odor, just all commercial deodorant smells horrible to me. maybe i should spray perfume on my pits.
― bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)
Actually I do dab perfume there if it's a warm day and I'm going out after work and can't shower again. I also can't put perfume on my neck or face or ears or etc because it'll break out, so underarms are prob the highest point I can apply it. o_O
― Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)
i secret gel one i had was unscented this degree one i bought is 'fresh rain' or something that smells nothing like that but at least isn't nostril burning even if i feel a bit weird abt it
you can put a drop of lavender (or other) essential oil in yr armpits and it works really well btw, but you shld prob like the smell of lavender and not think it smells like old ladies
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)
the weleda deodorant, actually not bad for summer.. somehow you don't sweat much, if you don't use all those chemicals? i have not tried the salt toothpaste yet.. i like the calendula kind a lot
― daria-g, Thursday, 7 August 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
this is the secret cost of shaving your pits isn't it
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 7 August 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
one cost - shave, put on alcohol-based spray deodorant -> YAAAOOOW
― daria-g, Thursday, 7 August 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)
I also use Lady Mitchum. I bought the gel completely by accident, but it is doing me right.
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 8 August 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)
I've been enjoying the Vichy deodorant for men. Neutral, unscented and a stern pharmaceutical-like design
― baaderonixx, Friday, 8 August 2008 08:30 (seventeen years ago)
i find it funny that the same water/minerals that makes all these beauty products also goes into a really delicious pastille/mint.
