oh totally - the conservative-cut sheer cardigan is classic imo

i bought the purple one today!

How did I not know this thread was here? I wear cardigans all the time. I just bought two of the same black cardigans from Talbots because I wear the fuck out of them.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 00:26 (fourteen years ago)
That's two new black ones to add to the two that I'm still wearing from last season (they are kind of worn out so they're not as appropriate for work). I'm about three years away from having the blue dress and black cardigan version of the Closet Full of the Same Black Suit.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)
i also love cardigans.
even writing that was enjoyable.
― estela, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 00:31 (fourteen years ago)
I love and wear the fuck out of them too. I would say I maybe wear a black cardigan 3-4 out of seven days a week. I should maybe stop wearing so much black. Anyway, I could do with a new basic one. The gap one looks really nice but I tend to shy away from such thin fabrics. I like things with a bit more shape/structure.
― your mom the burrito (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)
Highly recommend the Talbots "Charming Cardi." Nice body, good fit, wears well (with gentle washing), little to no fading. My only beef is shank buttons, which I think aren't as secure, but they do look more polished. Easy to swap out buttons, though.
I've always been disappointed in Lands End cardigans. They fade terribly and the collar always comes unravelled.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 02:58 (fourteen years ago)
Oh also - Pendleton has beautiful merino wool cardigans. They are only available in straight sizes but I can live vicariously through you.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)
I am going to look these up right now! My current staple is a simple black one from Nordstrom's but I could always use another.
― your mom the burrito (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:03 (fourteen years ago)
i bought my purple cardigan at banana republic not gap tho i know that's what the link says! it's pretty structured but yeah def thin. i'm still looking for my perfect cardigan replacements for the couple i have that are holey and pretty unwearable but i can't let go of.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)
i love a sheer cardigan, though.
hmm i need to go get at least one of those.
intrigued by the talbot's one!
i overwear this black silk 3/4 sleeve one from old navy from like 8 years ago, back when you could get something that wouldn't fall apart in 3 washes.
― tehresa, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)
an 8 yr old old navy cardi?!?! that's impressive!
i also adore cardigans but i always have trouble getting the right length.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)
^^ me too; also I don't like wearing 3/4 sleeve ones because I like all of my arms to be warm, but often the cutest cardigans are 3/4 sleeve ones.I think I own more cardis than any other item of clothing... My favourite one was from Anthropologie (reduced section) but I've seen 2 other people wearing it this week.
― kinder, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 05:46 (fourteen years ago)
I have a couple of 3/4 sleeve cardigans, and they have their place, but for the most part they just annoy me.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 12:05 (fourteen years ago)
Someone once left a girl's cardigan in my house and I've never been able to trace who's it was, so I've started wearing it despite it being for the wrong gender, and it's probably my favourite item of clothing now.
― ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 12:12 (fourteen years ago)
it is so like a cardigan to reel you in like that.
― estela, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 12:27 (fourteen years ago)
Argh I am the person those are made for! I hate having things around my wrists and pull/roll long sleeves up every single day.
― Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:01 (fourteen years ago)
i love pulling my sleeves up so i find 3/4 length tops really unsatisfying!
what is the appeal of a sheer cardi? i feel like I would have difficulty making it look non-sloppy. Wouldn't you have to always wear a plain top underneath?
― civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:04 (fourteen years ago)
Also HOW can you still have cardigans from 8 years ago?? Mine pill under the arms and the pockets rip out, and I only gentle wash cold and line dry but the surfaces never stay glossy and nice.
― Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)
i love long snug sleeves, but long saggy sleeves are only ok if i'm not eatingnot sure how medieval ladies managed to feed themselves without ruining their dresses tbh

i have cardigans from a looooooong time ago -- the key is to rotate so you don't wear through one. also to continue wearing them even if they are pilly and gross, possibly with holes.
I generally get one a year and just wear the shit out of it.
I also love 3/4 length sleeves on everything.
― your mom the burrito (ENBB), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:10 (fourteen years ago)
My cardigans go through phases:
Professional gradeCasual FridayWeekend LooksHouse Cardigan
I limit fresh, new cardigans to work wear for their first season, then it's down the line until they are too ragged to wear in any context outside of Extreme Leisure.
And I can't get eight years of wear out of anything. I just don't have enough closet space to keep enough clothes in a long enough rotation. The pants I'm wearing today are like five years old, though.
― pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:16 (fourteen years ago)
i'm such a cheapo when it comes to clothes that i never buy anything of good enough quality that it lasts more than a season or two. plus i throw everything in the washing machine together and never line dry.
― just1n3, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 16:16 (fourteen years ago)
I think I have one I've had for at least 12 years! It's black with silvery piping and I wore it all the time as a student. There might be a small whole in it now.
― kinder, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)
my old cardi was a real fluke, i guess - others pill and lose shape, but this one has just held up so well. i wear it a lot, too! cold water wash on delicate setting (which i do for most of my work clothing), dry flat (or hang). i really do think the gap brands' quality has declined drastically in the past 5 or so years - all my old pieces have held up, but things i buy nowadays seem to die rather quickly. i was actually on a boycott of banana for a while bc of this but i don't know, somehow i ended up with more banana stuff this year...
― tehresa, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)
I live in cardigans - I have 5 fine merino wool ones from J. Jill I bought 3 years ago that I love (and a pile of cotton ones, but I love the wool ones the most). I pretty much wear one every day. Two are getting ratty, but I darned up some pulls and felted some tiny holes (and this merino doesn't pill) and decided I don't care because I love them. It's my uniform: black shoes, non-descript trousers, nice-ish T or notch collar blouse, cardigan. If I wear something different, people look suspicious.
― Jaq, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:27 (fourteen years ago)
haha that is pretty much my uni, too!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:30 (fourteen years ago)
well, i can't wear t's and i don't like collared blouses, but i do wear whatever shirt and a black cardi why bc black cardis match everything!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:31 (fourteen years ago)
chunky shawl cardigans. yes.
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:01 (fourteen years ago)
there was a time a few years ago when i thought hoodies might have overtaken cardigans for mebut i'm okay now
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 15 September 2011 19:39 (fourteen years ago)
I need the sheer cardigan explained too. I wear cardigans so I don't have to iron/worry too much about the shirt underneath.
I just counted my cardigans and I have 10. I think I can buy 2more for the season and not feel bad about having too many.
