my aunt bought me the same ill-fitting sweater three years in a row for Christmas when I was 17-20. I was dirt poor and she had tons of money - the sweaters were expensive but hideous. :( What a waste!

yet, in the same box from my aunt was this really classic plaid button-down i'm wearing today, size *large*. it's kind of a black watch tartan with a white undercheck. how these two garments got into the same box baffles me.

remember the scene in a christmas story in which ralphie receives a pink fuzzy bunny pajama suit from his aunt? that actually happened to a friend of mine. i was staying with her family over xmas that year, and her grandmother (who was basically estranged from them) sent her a big package out of the blue after years of no gifts or calls or anything. the package contained a bright pink, footed sleeper suit, which would have been great if my friend had been 6 years old. she was 16 at the time, though. wtf!

that shirt sounds nice, elmo!

i used to end up with pajamas EVERY FREAKING YEAR while my sisters and cousins would get really cute clothes. i think this was my grandmother's way of telling me i was fat and unattractive.

God! Thanks, grandma, you batty old bitch.

I actually did have a grandma who was a crazy bitch, so I realize that seems like a harsh thing to say but...Theresa's grandma sounds like she earned it.

Laurel, Friday, 15 August 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that totally compounded the middle child syndrome, too.

One Christmas when I was 14, we went to a relative's house for Christmas Day. We got to present opening time, and said relative handed me a parcel. I opened it, and it was a jumper that was clearly several sizes too small. "Go on, put it on!" said the relative. Me: "No, I'll wear it later" Relative: "Don't be silly, put it on now!" Me: "OK..." I put the jumper on and looked stupid for the rest of the day.

My grandma sewed us stretch pants (patterned) for Xmas every year, and elastic-waist shorts with crazy patterns for our birthdays. I thought this shit was HOT until at age 14 I started getting mocked hardcore by my peers. Now what is so wrong with some baggy shorts of red fabric patterned with cartoon dinosaurs? In eighth grade? With a size XL "Roakill Cafe" shirt? Srsly.

Typical outfit at age 13, shorts by Grandma.

I liked those ones bcz they reminded me of "F-ZERO." These are important fashion considerations!

Oh man, I just remembered the worst clothing gift I ever got. (Like I said, I liked my grandma's.)

The first year I had xmas with John's family, we'd been dating about four months. His mom gives me a gift and is really adamant I read the card first. It says "USE YOUR POWER WISELY." The gift is a tiny black t-shirt that says "I have the pussy so I make the rules." !!!wtf?!?!?! I hid it in the back of my closet. I thought about wearing it inside-out, once, when I was painting but couldn't even bring myself to do that. After about two years I threw it away.
