Recommend Me a New Fragrance

I fell head over heels for L'Artisan Perfumeur's Timbuktu (wood/spice/incense), but $85/50ml is too much for my budget right now.

What I DON'T like: overt fruit in general and citrus specifically (classic colognes in general are right out); tuberose or jasmine; vanilla and related "gourmand" scents (I do NOT want to smell like a bakery).

I'm probably looking for a wood, tobacco, incense, and/or leather fragrance (an ostensibly men's fragrance might be nice), but I haven't sniffed anything yet in this line (other than the Timbuktu) worth further investigation.

two that i always recommend: nuits d'hadrien and mandragore, both by annick goutal. unfortunately, i think they're both in the same price range as l'artisan fragrances.

demeter has a tobacco fragrance, as well as various woody scents, and the prices are pretty low (poor staying power, though).

you can do a search for various scent components here: http://www.basenotes.net/

Thanks for the suggestion. At least some Goutal fragrances are available from online discounters, and the next time I go to Nordstrom or Bloomingdales I should be able to play with the testers.

you can always try BPAL; they have all kinds of tobacco/woody/resiny scents

I just ordered another 6 imp's ears from BPAL, more in a woody, smoky vein than my previous ones (which were ordered for summer wear). They have probably arrived at my office while I'm on vacation but I'll let you know how they turn out when I get back.

Just got Kenzo's Tokyo, which could be up your alley

Re. Annick Goutal: At that price, surely one would expect them to last more than 3 hours?

really liked the tom ford tobacco vanille too, but at £100+ for a tiny bottle it's not for me

nine months pass...

picked up some diptyque fragrances

philsophykos & l'ombre dans l'eau

both are marketed as unisex, but the latter's rose note is pretty perfumey

i realllllly like diptyque 'eau duelle' for some reason (don't usually go for vanilla), i am thinking of buying it! i don't wear perfume very often at all, just on occasion artisan parfumeur 'thé pour un été' but it isn't summer now so..
