T-shirt with a tie?

Red threadless t-shirt, pin-striped Rugby vest and an H&M skinny black tie. Is there any way I can get away with this? I think it looks really cool but wife and friends keep insisting it's silly.

Advice?

There is a bloke over in the architectural library who seems to wear this look every day.

I suspect it's something to do with a dress code.

It looks absolutely ridiculous on anyone past the sixth form! (It looks ridiculous on people in sixth form as well, but you're allowed, nay, supposed to look ridiculous at that age.)

Team it up with a navy coloured blazer with brass buttons with anchors embossed on them. And you will be beaten with sticks...

i think t-shirt with a tie could look alright, but not in this case: i think a graphic print tee just confuses the look, i mean you're already wearing a vest AND a necktie, unless this is some epic tshirt that is somehow improved by wearing a tie? no, i can't see it. also it depends a lot on the tie itself and how it's knotted -- i would guess having a firm knot tied a good distance from the throat.

i'm trying to be generous but this look is all too YOUNG HOOS for me -- like, i would imagine this outfit to be accompanied by sideburns, a bowler hat, and an all-in-one tool clipped to the belt.

i imagine it to be more trendy, but i'd hit either one.
