SUICIDE

Can anyone tell me more about the band suicide. I believe they were active in N.Y. in the late 70's & sound quite a bit like spacemen 3 or the velvet underground if they used analog synthesizers.

It's Martin Rev (producer) and Alan Vega (Vocalist). He does sound a bit like Elvis, in his crooning at least, not the screaming. "First" and "Second" album are seminal. "A Way of Life" also a good selection from their later stuff. They are much more noise oriented than spacemen 3 and VU, very harsh and mechanized. The influenced much synth pop in Britian but barely get credit for it. Also key players in the NY art-wave, noise-punk, movement eruption in late 70s-->> early 80s.

thanks luke! Yes you're right, the vocalist does sound like elvis at times! the reason i made that V.U. spacemen3 comparison was cause it sort of had tht smae kind of bare-bones type 2 or 3 chord song structure. which was in essence pretty melodic and infact sounded very guitar based. some songs were entirely driven by 1 or 2 note bass guitar like lines(which were synth generated of course). and even the almost industrial type droning tht you speak of, is quite remeniscent of guitar amp feedback so pervailent in more arty garage rock bands. also it had tht same kind of grity feel. not at all that contemplative keyboard noodling you get with early synth music tht was often times quite pretensious. but thanks again luke! your info was much appreciated!

Amazingly, they did not in fact have a synth

Springsteen was a fan. Might have had some inspirational effect on Nebraska ...

Don't forget the fact that they were somewhat renowned for their audience baiting (i.e. confronting actual members of their audience in an effort to "stir the pot" so-to-speak). I mean, I love the stripped down keys and minimalist beat, the vocal delivery-- the whole bit-- but the antagonistic display of aggression towards ones own audience is what puts them over the top. Pioneers in every sense.
