i think i need to start taking a multi-vitamin - which vitamins do you take?
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)
kirkland (costco brand) daily multi, and a whole foods-brand calcium supplement. when i remember, i take an omega-3 oil capsule.
― lauren, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
you should be careful with multivitamins if you already eat stuff like ultra-fortified cereal and meal-replacement bars, though - there are some vitamins that you don't want to overdo. the center for science in the public interest has good info on that.
― lauren, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)
i drink an emergen-c 2 times a day. and i try to remember to put flax seed on my cereal. i really need to find a good fish pill.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
i am kind of weirded out by multi vitamins making my pee smell.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
omega-3 is supposed to be great. and fish pill, i can find out from my aunt, she's a nutritionist. every time i visit it's fish pill this omega that.

i take enteric-coated wild salmon oil, esther C, zinc citrate, vitamin D (in winter or if not going outside in sun enough...)
used to take a multi-vitamin every day for years until a couple years ago when i figured out that multi-vitamins bug my digestive system. same with cal-mag. have tried Bs and other stuff over the years. i don't know, i make sure i eat nutrient-dense foods instead. still feel the C, zinc, salmon oil and D make a difference tho.

I feel better and healthier now than when I used to take B/C vitamins everyday plus calcium/magnesium supps, and threw loads of flax seeds/flaxseed oil, nutritional yeast, etc. on my food.
I'm not sure what that's about.
― dell, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe my body only likes to absorb stuff when it's in FOOD?
― dell, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)
i heard a story about how you have to go in the sun for vitamin d to be absorbed properly. also apparently sunblock inhibits absorption so they are recommending you spend 15 min in sun before applying sunblock to let it absorb, unless you have skin cancer already. what a mess.
― tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)
too much vitamin c is very disruptive to the digestive system, btw.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
I don't take any supplements - maybe I should start. What are the most essential?
― ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
every source i've read that i trust says that a multivitamin is sufficient, plus maybe a calcium supplement for ladies.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
right - that's what I thought.
Tza: One of the profs in my dept studies the Vit D exposure thing as the focus of his work.
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2005/07/05/sunshine-vitamin-d.aspx
I know there's more recent info but he's a big supported of short bursts of unprotected sun exposure.
― ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:02 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, that's why i take esther C - easier on digestive system - but maybe not for everyone!
was listening to teh radio the other day and they were talking abt how in 10 min of sun exposure (without spf on) you produce/absorb like 20,000 iu of vit D! the scientist who was talking abt it was being quite practical, saying that we need a lot of vit D and that the prevalence of conditions such as MS and even autism were directly linked to lack of vit D (and god knows what else, so hm). i don't know, i live pretty far north and am not so freaked out abt sun exposure except for a couple months of the year when UV index is v high. not saying sunblock doesn't save lives or is a conspiracy or anything, just saying that sometimes you gotta have some sun on yr real skin, even if just for a few minutes. then you put on a hat, clothes, spf, whatever. xpost!

i think if you're eating a varied, balanced diet then most supplements are superfluous, but i still take a multivitamin and b-complex on a semi-regular basis just in case
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)
i'm also big on bulk fiber like psyllium husk caps because it is good to scrub down your poopin' parts
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)
oh, yeah - let's hear it for fiber! i never think of it as a supplement, but it is.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)
fiber is like the greatest thing ever.
― tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)
Can you have too much fiber? I ask only because I'm veg and eat mostly a whole foods/whole grain based diet that is already really high in fiber but I could probably use some more help in the areas that um fiber helps with. A fiber supplement couldn't hurt, right?
― ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)
fiber is a very essential part of any diet but it's easy to overlook -- i try to be aware of it, snack on raw fruits & veg, and try to make sure i get both soluble and insoluble fibers in plentiful amounts.
soluble fiber can help scrub the plaque out of your arteries! insoluble fiber can help scrub the plaque out of your digestive tract! fiber!nature's broom!
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)
i know a lot of people who've developed what i guess could be called ibs spectrum symptoms as they've gotten older, and a daily dose of extra fiber really seems to help. i use the hardcore, old person-style powdered stuff.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)
enbb, the greatest concern with taking a bulk fiber source is dehydration -- you should drink a whole lot of water with any fiber supplement
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
Elmo that's good to know. I drink 2L most days anyway but will remember if I start with a supplement.
L - I might have to try that. What brand do you use - Metamucil (sp?)?
― ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)
the costco equivalent (we're regular AND thrifty).
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
LOL, nice.
― ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)
WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH CHICKS AND FIBER
― deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
aren't almost all bulk fiber supplements are the same psyllium husk? -- i take the capsules because i hate gagging down the powdered stuff
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
i think so.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)
a dose of the capsules is like 10 though, right? i remember it being a big chore to take them all... thinking mixing in a powder would be a much nicer experience.
― tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
i like being regular, like i get worried if i don't poop at my usual times
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
i keep wishing i had something to say here, but health isn't this big thing in my life. i hope to change this soon.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)
og
tza, you can take a lesser dose more frequently, which is what they suggest if you're taking it for soluble fiber / heart health reasons -- a larger dose is definitely more laxative in effect
― elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)
Interesting in light of our earlier conversation regarding supplements - I got the results from my CBC at my annual physical back last week.
My Cholesterol was 140 which is good and trglycerides were 50 which I guess is excellent so I was happy about that. However, it turns out I'm anemic. My Dr. recommended a multivitamin with Iron. Anyone have any specific ones they like?
