aviators - cool or fool?

for whatever reason i look pretty good in glasses/sunglasses but would only ever wear them (sunglasses that is) driving. i feel ridiculous otherwise. anyway i got this pair of aviators, which i think are cool in theory, but when it comes down to it, do i look like a pretentious lookit-me dick wearing them?

I would also like an answer to this query. Got accused a few weeks ago of looking like someone out of Hard Fi and was quite perturbed.

lots of factors here -- the aviator shape is neither inherently good or bad, and my opinion usually depends of the shape of the bridge, the color of the hardware, and the coating on the lens. they are good for driving, yes.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

all of the aviators i've owned have been o.g. american optical deals from the army navy surplus.

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:02 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes the faded lenses make you look like a child molester; mirrored lenses almost always make you look like a cop.

i have this really crazy pair of aviator shades that are kind of small and circular and have the flaps on the side made of glass...they look like nazi glasses. i'm going to try to sell them to steampunks on ebay for $$.

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

are they glacier glasses?

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

maybe?

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

i bought some wayfarers, that aint over yet is it?

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Bugger me I hate this trend, especially the *zany* coloured ones.

Ed, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

you could say you DREAD them
more into earth tones maybe?

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

sry lazy zing

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

Not that I object to coloured framed sunglasses, mine have red and brown frames.

Ed, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

ed are you talking about aviators?? theyre kind of trend immune arent they? although 'zany colors' yeah that sounds band

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

wtf are u talking about

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

aviators are timeless

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

nothing is timeless

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, aviators are definitely enduring in style for sure but they definitely can be placed on a timeline i.e. mid to late 1970s

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

i like the way aviators look, but push them up on top of my head when i walk indoors without thinking, and get my hair tangled in the nosepiece. ouch.

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

I probably mean the rayban wayfarer style thing that is going on rather than aviators, carry on.

Ed, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)

regardless aviators are def not trend immune and deeznuts has just outed himself as being 16 years old

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

my mom bought me some aviators when i was like 10 and i remember they were so out of step w/ style at the time its not even funny

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

well deej since theyre either based on wwii fighterpilot fashion or 1920s roadster fashion that was kinda my point in starting this thread, that they always sort of straddle the line b/w coolery & geekery - i dont feel like theyve ever become trendy enough to become mockworthy, tho i could be wrong

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

Cool. 90% of this summer I wear either mirror aviators or black Wayfarers.

felicity, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

i want mirror aviators. mine are the child molester kind, i think.

ps 'wayfarers' look dumb sorry

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

you look dumb

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

probably

deej, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

i need new sunglasses but look kinda dumb in both aviators and wayfarers so i guess the way my face is set up saves me from having to make any kinda personal decision as to either

but i still wish to find the perfect aviators that prob do not exist and that wld look awesome on me

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

felicity, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

quincie, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

Like Ray-Ban Aviators, Wayfarers were originally marketed as sunglasses for pilots.[2] Despite the advertising campaign targeted at men, however, they quickly rose in popularity among Hollywood starlets.[2] Kim Novak wore Wayfarers on the French Riviera in 1954,[3] and Marilyn Monroe made Wayfarers into a "cult object."[4] Audrey Hepburn's wearing of tortoise shell Wayfarers sunglasses the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's[5][6] was the design's turning point, "transforming the Wayfarer into an accessory legend."[5] (Wayfarers sunglasses have gone through numerous design modifications during their history;[7] Hepburn's oversized shades in Breakfast at Tiffany's are an example of the early Wayfarer silhouette.[7]) During the 1950s and 1960s, celebrities including John Lennon,[3] Bob Dylan,[3] James Dean,[8] John F. Kennedy,[9] Roy Orbison,[3] and Andy Warhol[10] were known for wearing Wayfarers.

ok so deej is -technically- right. however they do in fact look like darkened versions of the 60s specs the indie/emo kids were copping. id stick w/ aviators personally, not just because of the indie/emo connection but because they just fucking look cooler - i dont need to name check a soul for evidence of that.

otm-- i prefer the ones that are more rounded at the bottom as opposed to pointy like the ones in the picture posted up thread

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 June 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

I canned the aviators for wayfarers. I find them much more comfortable on my face.

Also i look fuking awesome.

wilter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

aviators are officially lame because I watched Magnum Force last night and man do those bike cops look dummmmmmmb

El Tomboto, Thursday, 24 July 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 24 July 2008 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

I sense a new trend with those 50's style "hepcats" things. I don't kn ow what they're called, they have this small metal thing in the middle and wayfarish lenses. Anyone knows what I'm talking about?

baaderonixx, Friday, 25 July 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)

deez i have mirrored aviators and they rock

sunny successor, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

oh i guess that was a month too late

sunny successor, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

I broke down at the Long Beach surf shop and bought these wayfarers:

http://www.sunglasses-shop.co.uk/thumbs/side/glasses/ray-ban-2008/2140-9654722-02.jpg

They had an excellent pair of white frames with black sides--very two-tone--but the mirrored lenses seemed a bit extreme.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

yeah sunny it was too late but i saw a movie recently w/ owen wilson in not mirrored aviators & thats good enough for me

what is baad talking about??

deeznuts, Saturday, 26 July 2008 21:16 (seventeen years ago)
