I want to order this matt & nat bag for $100 which is half-price, but I'm afraid I'll walk into a Michigan TJ Maxx in July and see it for $30.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

i want the black and gold one, too.

lauren, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not really a hobo person, I would basically love a snap-frame doctor's bag in every color of patent leather. Hello, fairy godmother?

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

That teal and fuchsia combo is kind of cracking me up, though. Would you feel like you had to wear all black on the days you carried it?

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, how often do i wear colors other than black or grey?

matt & nat bags are usually pretty cute but i don't like their habit of stitching black bags with brown.

lauren, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

yes yuck. i also hate white stitching on black.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Lauren: Good point!

I hadn't noticed the brown stitching thing, I'll look at my black bag later!

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

im carrying around this Chinese Laundry bag right now. I loved it at first but I'm growing weary. Why are white bags without a bunch of buckles or brown edging etc etc so hard to find:

sunny successor, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

Try white patent, it tends to be brown-free. :)

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard of this place before but they do non-leather (so, veg-friendly) bags that I quite like the looks of, and are CHEAP. Might order one to see if the quality is there. Anyone else ever tried?

well, hey:

sunny successor, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

Hahah that's EXACTLY the one I clicked on when I GISed "white patent handbag" for you.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

I like it! they have another white patent but it looks more like cream to me.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

I'm getting kind of excited about this one.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

I was just looking at that red one!

ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

Or this.

Honestly I'd never considered a non-leather handbag until rrrrobyn recommended natt & mat and then I found a dozen of them on sale and bought 4 at once. They're nice enough that I don't mind, and they're lasting, too. I beat the shit out of bags so....

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

I've never heard of natt & mat but I really like the look of their stuff. The only non-leather bag I own was super cheap and held up really well so I'm definitely intrigued by these.

ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

(Er sorry I'm a moron and it's nat & matt, obv.)

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 21:51 (seventeen years ago)

Dear Bags,

Why you have to be so cute and appealing? I am in a wedding this weekend and between the bm dress, the shoes, the dress for the rehearsal dinner, the haircut and manicure etc. I am flat broke.

Please stay cute and preferably on sale and I'll see you again soon once friends stop getting hitched and I have more cash.

Lovingly,

E

Dear E,

You don't need more bags no matter how cute they are.

Love,

E

ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

Haha did not get haircut or manicure/pedi for wedding I was just in, plus wore shoes I already had. For that I think I deserve a bag.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

You are smarter than I am and totally deserve the bag.

ps - haircut not specifically for the wedding but I need one badly so the timing seemed appropriate.

ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

omg I have been totally stalking 3 Matt and Nat bags ever since seeing one in Elle. I like how all can be worn messenger bag style but am questioning whether I will really carry a mustard colored bag. I want to get the John Peel in mustard, the Grandmaster in green and the Emme Gryr? in black.

Yerac, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

Tano also stitches black bags with brown which is just too annoying.

Yerac, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

my friend just gave me one of these, which is like my favorite handbag/wallet ever ever ever:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g192/rrawn/gucciwallet.jpg

she said it's fake but it says GUCCI made in italy inside. i guess that doesn't mean it's real tho?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

sorry kind of big

Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:36 (seventeen years ago)

(supposedly if you order a Matt and Nat from this website called material girl they go 10% lower than any website price, including the Matt and Nat website.

Yerac, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

No, actually I just finished reading a book about the Camorra, basically the mafia in Naples, and apparently that area is where all high-end and knock-off "Made in Italy" garments and accessories come from: factories built everywhere, in apartments, in stairwells, using every little space for basically sweatshops.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

i remember ogling my grandmother's gucci purse when i was like 12. some things never change.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

A man there, someone the author suggests is maybe the best tailor in the world, made a white suit that Angelia Jolie wore to I think the Academy Awards and he was never told that's what it was for, he got her measurements by mail and was commissioned to make three different suits that were then claimed by someone else. He made some ridiculously low amt of money for them, considering. His wife saw AJ wearing the suit on television and gasped out loud, the man noticed, and shortly thereafter quit his job as a tailor and starting driving trucks, instead. Less heartbreaking.

Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

i remember that suit!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

Gah - on the material girl site I found the bag and wallet I want. That's it. Am officially saving up for M&N!

ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

ok i need a new bag as the zip on the large front pocket of mine has just broken.

don't really like girly bags, i like more messenger-bag tyles. any suggestions?

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

haha laurel i was looking at the red bag and wanting it!
mmm bags

my initial search has yielded these results:

http://akamai.backcountrystore.com.edgesuite.net/images/items/large/JAN/JAN0153/ELFGRN.jpg

http://akamai.backcountrystore.com.edgesuite.net/images/items/large/BLR/BLR0094/TQBLK.jpg

http://akamai.backcountrystore.com.edgesuite.net/images/items/large/COL/COL1075/BEBA.jpg

kind of boring, i know, but i'm not in the market for anything over about $40 right now.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

does anyone else get annoyed by how heavy leather bags are? i mean, i carry less than some women do, but by the time i get it all into a bag, it's relatively heavy. it just seems weird to me to start off with something that already feels heavy when it's empty. so i've had canvas or nylon bags for the most part over the last few years, but wonder if i just need to get over it, basically.

rubyredd, what about a bag from yakpak? the ones on their site give you an idea of the cool prints, and i have a bag which is big enough to fit my crap but not gigantic, plus has a long enough strap to wear like a messenger bag (the style isn't on the website, but i've seen it in stores recently). plus, it has hedgehogs on it, which i like...

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

i don't remember if i already commented, but i have to be honest about this thread title. it's bagalicious! i did, i just typed it.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

Ruby out of the ones you posted I definitely like the last one - the red one - the best. That said, I bought my husband the green jansport one a while ago and it is very roomy and has held up well.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

i like red one too, but obv b/c it leans to girly side of that kind of bag, which is my preference.
yakpak bags are good!

yeah re: heavy leather bags - this is part of why i can't deal with huge hobo bags - they're like as heavy as a touring backpack! i have a pretty big matt&nat bag but i guess b/c it's not real leather, it's not so heavy when empty

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

my matt&nat bag is teal :)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

You have two matt&nat bags, I would just like to point out.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Colette, once when I was first interviewing for jobby job I borrowed an old Coach tote bag to hold copies of resume and etc, and it weighed a TON even empty and was ridiculous. It was the old heavy leather, though -- wears like iron and weighs almost as much.

The newer generation of big bags are also lighter-weight material, I think. But they're also not meant to last 10 years.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)

(Re the thread title, "Pocketbook Angel" was an old Belle & Sebastian song that made the rounds of tape trees a long time ago. Did they ever release it? I dunno. But it was a good title.)

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

i do have two matt&nat bags - yaay the sweetness of laurelz! :)
xpost

ohman i covet coach bags like nobody's business

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

i still have 'pocketbook angel' on a tape! an adorable tape

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

i had been carrying a backpack to work, which i know isn't very professional, but i'm not very professional either. anyway, i got this bag

http://www.tate.org.uk/product/P28289-2688_3.jpg

for my birthday and love it. it's felted wool and perfect size for a magazine, bottle of water, umbrella and lunch, and i suspect it looks much more grown up than my backpack.

my mom has a coach bag that is big enough to live in, and i swear i would have health problems if i carried it around all the time. maybe it's because they drive everywhere in michigan, so she only ever has to carry it for minutes at a time?

colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

Exactly. My aunt who used to live in NYC who owned that Coach tote had to stop using it because of shoulder and back problems.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

pls recommend me fashion-forward backpacks!

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know if my everyday, work backpack is nec 'fashion-foward' but it is not conspicuous or anything - it's a black volcom pack with a laptop pocket in it. oh, found it - shiny looking parts are not actually shiny at all or even noticeable against rest of bag. but anyway, it's not really a fashion bag but it's not bad and it fits me

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

also: not expensive and pretty decently made
lol i didn't know it was called 'school backpack' - it's like the world wants me to never not be a student

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

Several types of cool over-the-shoulder bags from twelve!

now that's cute

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, I like their lines v v v v much. No prices online right now, though -- you have to call to order.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

suuper cuute

and i love the little shoe bags!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

i want to put all my shoes in colour-coordinated bags!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

I want like four of the "bowler bag" with leather trim. I just wish they offered it in the primary colors -- I want a red and yellow one.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

omg laurel with all these bag links you're going to bankrupt me!

BL - I like the brooklyn industries backpack I have for school stuff.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

i have this gorgeous rawhide leather satchel that i love but have never ever used because it weighs about 5kg. i carry a lot of junk with me, so i need as light a bag as possible.

laurel those bags are awesome!

bf is sending me a 'zipper repair kit' from his work so i can fix my bag :)

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

My old bag was looking shaby so I just looked at about 1,000 bags in the last month. I found a great Chicago area store called Lori's shoes which had a lot of lightweight cute leather bags. There was a chocolate brown Janet & Janet bag (no picture) that I loved.

I also like this Chocolat Blu bag:

http://www.lorisshoes.com/assets/alternate/LDS08161b.jpg (See it is convertible from tote to foldover).

But the store was having a "1 cent" sale where if I bought this Pietro Allesandro bag I could get something else for a penny:

http://www.lorisshoes.com/assets/alternate/LDS07779b.jpg

So I got that bag in olive and these Franco Sarto boots in chestnut:

felicity, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

Is it the year of the foldover? I like the red bag!

I ended up getting an on-sale Matt & Nat model in the crinkly "Japanese" finish.
