Nineties Fashion

Ok, I may be crazy, or just viewing things through rose-tinted glasses glazed with nostalgia-prompted teary fuzzball trails, but I seem to remember the mid-nineties, like, circa '95-'97 or so, as being a pretty good time for fashion. Clothing and hairstyle seemed...tasteful. Me liked.

Then, in the late nineties everyone was suddenly wearing flared jeans, and then in the early aughties you had distressed denim everywhere, and electroclash horrors, and then by the middle of the decade it seems like every other person (female, anyhow) was running around in those blouses that transform the wearer into an Albanian peasant who is 4 1/2 months pregnant. Also, when is everyone gonna stop wearing those ballet-type flats? For fuck's sake...

I apologize if it sounds like I'm particularly picking on women's fashion, here (or if I've singled out someone's favorite article of lifestyle-wear). Maybe I just don't stare at random dudes' sartorial choices as much, or maybe it's just that women's fashion is somehow more susceptible to egregious heights of NOOO!-ness.

Oh, also, I think that sneaker-design has been getting steadily crappier with each passing year.

What happened? Why??

dell, Thursday, 19 June 2008 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

ugh. i associate the 90s with baby tees, flannel shirts, that god-awful "rachel" haircut, and square-toed shoes.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

^^ exactly.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and enormous raver pants.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

in the early 90s i did the leftover 80s shit with like plastic gems and shirt paint and t-shirt clips and stirrup pants and layered tube socks.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

^^^not my shining moment

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, also, I think that sneaker-design has been getting steadily crappier with each passing year.

If only sneaker manufacturers would spend more time re-releasing popular, older models! That'd be awesome!

Lamp, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I realize that they have been re-doing old models, but I'm talking about new designs.

lol tehresa- pix please, etc.
also, what is a t-shirt clip??

dell, Thursday, 19 June 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

i think they have all been burned.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

OOOOOOHHHH, ok, thank you! haha, those are great.

I figured it would be difficult to google, hence my tuomas-ness.

omg tshirt clips. guys i'm telling you they will be back.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

actually i dressed kinda normal verging on boring '95-97 - b/c i lived in freakin victoria, br1tish c0lumbia, rode bike evrywhere, was student but had workterms in govt offices...

faded boy-cut levi's (mid-90s version of 'low-waisted' haha)
black pants
knee-length black skirts, a couple long summer skirts but not hippie-style
boxy but shortish scoop-neck t-shirts
cardigans
black doc boots, loafers, sandals
i don't know, i srsly can't remember much of my 'fashion choices' at that time...

this thread is gonna make me go through photo albums uhoh

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, same here, rrrob, for casual wear. Except make the Tshirts all oversized, basically.

For dress-up, though, I went full-on Old Guard and plaid skirts and white blouses with gold pins at the neck.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

found this pic in a pile of photos at my bro's place in december, took a pic of it in photo booth, hence distortion - i think it's from summer of 97 - yeah, white t-shirt, short earth-tone skirt, prob brown sandals - yeah i think i had nice but kinda boring clothes 95-97...

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

the 90s didn't seem so different in my memory until a recent bout of insomnia meant i was awake for late 90s Carole Malone 'chat' show Guilty!, aaaaaaaaargh my eyes

DG, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

aww you look so normal!

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

The out-of-focusness is totally great, it looks like we're RUSHING TOWARD YOU AT THE SPEED OF GRAVITY.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

lol SPEED OF GRAVITY

damn that was a nice backyard on the sea-2-sky hwy
i think those were my too westcoast for fashion days, not that i am fashion plate now or whatever, but way better at being less boring/normal

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I know I've posted this before probably on the college WDYLL thread but these are me both in summer 1996 - I was 18. What was I thinking?

It appears I really really liked ball chain necklaces and brown lipstick. And dying my hair.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

awwww

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

omg tshirt clips. guys i'm telling you they will be back.

There is a stall in the Prudential Ctr that sells these! It brought me way back when I saw them but the nostalgia was not enough to make me purchase. heh.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

college (94-98) for me was vintage levis cords in various colors, thrift store t-shirts (little league teams, old businesses, etc) or polyester long-sleeved button-down patterned (ie, disco) shirts, vintage/vintage repro sneakers or flat-soled chelsea boots... 70s kid style mixed with art school angst was the thing.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

You were much more fashion-forward than I, in the exact same timeframe. I was still v confused about style in those days although was partial to used men's work clothes with name patches on the chest (my favorite shirt says "Chuck").

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

haha those are still classic

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

for me was vintage levis cords in various colors, thrift store t-shirts (little league teams, old businesses, etc) or polyester long-sleeved button-down patterned (ie, disco) shirts,

I abandoned my wannabe skater phase shortly after that summer and for the rest of college wore tons of what you listed. lol.

My favorite t-shirt was one I found in my dad's closet that was from before I was born and made for our neighbor's 21st birthday. It was yellow and just said "I Love Todd" on the front in blue. I wore that damn shirt all the time.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

Other favorite vintage t was another of my dad's that I'd given him as a kids that said "Superdad" and looked like a superman shirt. I wonder what happened to all that stuff.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

ones with a name ironed on somewhere were jackpot. also, obscure tourist attraction and bars.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yes!!

I had one from the HofbrÀuhaus house in Munich that had a big chicken doing the chicken dance on the front and all the writing was in German. It was amazing.

A couple of years ago I found a little league t shirt from my town on Long Island in a stall at Camden Market. That was so weird that I had to by it.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

haha enbb i think i had that dress's evil twin.

carpenter jeans/cords.

also, i had this old mickey-mouse shirt from disneyland that my father had worn to work on the car until i discovered it... i tried to wear it the first day of high school and my mother would not let me leave the house in it. it was cool though - one of the ones with like the navy blue around the neck and at the edge of the short sleeves.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

i also had those stupid shirts... like baby tees that said FedUp like the FedEx logo. oh god, the horror.

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yes, I had a baby-T bought at Ivy (UK) show that said "IVY" in the logo of Ivory soap. Long gone now, thank fuck.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

oh god parody tees, yes i remember

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

I had a Snapcase t-shirt done to look like the Snapple logo.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

my friend joe had a pepsi/sexsi shirt

tehresa, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

90's.. flannel shirts, t-shirts from high school ecology club, cutoff denim, black steel toe Docs, black t-strap mary jane style Docs, black Vans, Gap jeans, mens' corduroy trousers.. 70's tops from Goodwill.. lots of black. wore short black skirts with tights and steel toe Docs boots quite a lot. also cutoff denim + black fishnets + combat boots seemed like a normal sort of thing to wear?

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

yes! the docs! i also had the steal toes and some burgundy t-strap mary janes, and black vans, and green vans, and gap jeans, and men's trousers from goodwill... i think we were 90s twins, daria.

i worked at waves.

my dad was not upset with my docs, but he would consistently yell at me that i needed to regularly polish them because they were scuffed. he did not "get" that scuffed looked cool and grunge.

tehresa, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

he even did a whole explanation of how the steel toe would make them more prone to scuffing.

haha i never did
but dudes, i mean, i had an eyebrow ring/v small stud for almost the entirely of that decade, so, yeah

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

hah, I had a dark green crushed velvet shirt.. my college roommate freshman year "borrowed" it and I didn't ask for it back. also had a pair of black velveteen trousers but they were slim cut & soft and actually pretty cute

this one girl in my crowd in high school had her hair dyed burgundy, always wore matte dark brown/maroon lipstick, plaid shirts, rayon flowered stuff in dark colors, and super clunky black shoes. she was styling. i remember a bunch of us driving around town in someone's beat up car listening to the pixies.. also flaming lips 'transmissions from the satellite heart' but then everyone got pissed when the one song started getting played on mtv.

we had a camelot music! old wax trax & related stuff would show up in the dollar tape bin on a fairly regular basis - pigface, swans

daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

magenta tights overlaid with ripped fishnets + dark denim cutoffs + black t-shirt = ready to go to the mall to buy cassettes at camelot records. and perhaps enjoy some pretzel stix from hot sam.

LOLOL did I hang out with you in 1994?

daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

i was in love with vampire red hair dye by manic panic. my mother HATED it and so i'd do it secretly after she went to bed and then the next day she'd get pissed that i'd made a mess of my bathroom. it did kinda look like a murder crime scene.

tehresa, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

my mother would not let me dye my hair! she was already upset enough at the stuff i wore.. then i left for college & my little brother got manic panic and dyed his hair bright green & she was like eh whatever.

this reminds me, i got a black flowered rayon dress @ a thrift (gap circa 1995) and some clunky black j crew oxford shoes early this year, i should wear these together tomorrow. still looking for a nice soft flannel shirt actually.. i got a couple plaid ones but they're wool

daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

omg you guys just made me remember the magenta, dark green, deep red, etc tights i used to wear, whoaa, totally had forgotten!

'90/'91: OshKosh rave dungarees, fishing hat with cloth rose, Westwood/Deee-Lite copyist, Chelsea boots, creepers, lots of basic black. Mary Jane brogue Docs. Favourite outfit was micro-mini with cream silk collar and cuffs worn with bulletproof Donna Karan black matte jersey tights and suede silver-buckle shoes from Barney's.

'92/'93: Riot grrrl: child's t-shirt, candy necklace, A-line miniskirts, thick black tights and steel-toed docs. Same with low-hanging tartan trousers and red Massey Ferguson jacket. Silver dresses and long a-line skirts a la Bjork, long leather overcoat nicknamed 'Dave' after Bowie (it was very Low). Lots of crossover with Pulp and Saint Etienne look.

'94/'95: Ski sweaters, ski jackets, Joseph or vintage Farah trousers, Ben Sherman shirts, skinny men's suits from charity shops, twinsets with combat trousers, skinny t-shirts with contrasting piping. Patrick Cox loafers, patent Mary Janes.

'96/'97: Geometric pattern dresses over jeans or combat trousers, tall brothel creepers, lots of cardigans over all of this, 'Beck suits', duffle coat. Motorcycle/BMX trousers with tight fitted black top, lots of fitted black jackets. One pair black APC cords.

'98/'99: Shibuya petticoats, coloured fishnets, coloured tights, lots of fuchsia/orange/red/black/white, patent wedge boots, kitten heels, stilettos, fitted jackets again, Prada-esque slip-ons.

No flares, no flannel, no floral patterns.

suzy, Sunday, 22 June 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

I think the brown matte lipstick totally passed by our town.

My uniform: striped t-shirts, striped ribbed sweaters from the gap or esprit, corduroy pants and button downs (not flannel), denim shorts or overalls and always patterned tights (the ones that looked like tattoos) underneath everything. I wore some dresses but they were always some babydoll or weird thing I would pull out from the trunk of my friend's car. I still only wear clunky shoes.

Yerac, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

I cannot buy anything that is remotely velvet ever again.

Yerac, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

In the 90s I call the Gap "Stipewear".

Yerac, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

aw i miss chunky shoes, too. i think i still buy slightly streamlined versions of them. i love a thick heel.

horseshoe, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

At some point will post full-body photo of me used in Riot Grrrrl exhibition, it is totally LOL 1993. I forgot to mention all the little plastic barrettes that I didn't manage to completely purge 'til about 1998. I generally favoured bright red or very dark lipstick but I did have a Boots one called Cherry Conker which I'm reliably informed was bought by every Asian schoolgirl in London (and hidden from parents in dresser drawers).

Haha Stipewear for my posse involved Breton tops, jean jackets, paisley shirts and deerskin jackets, also Hush Puppies.

suzy, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

...oh and those oversized cardigans where people would poke a hole in the cuff for the half-glove effect.

suzy, Sunday, 22 June 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

oy, the little plastic barrettes.

lauren, Sunday, 22 June 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

oy, you with the black bob, bet you had as many as I did. I used to go to Southall to get the best ones from Punjabi market.

suzy, Sunday, 22 June 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

remember gadzooks? oh, the lols.

are we talking about those kiddie barrettes? like the little plastic colored flower ones? i had plenty.

tehresa, Sunday, 22 June 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

yup, those. suzy, i wasn't trying to deny it! i was just saying "oy."

lauren, Monday, 23 June 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

ha --> rayon flowered dresses, plaid flannel, clunky boots, cutoff denim, nerd glasses, dark lipstick.. Velocity Girl (I love this song)

daria-g, Thursday, 3 July 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

Omg I just had an unfortunate recollection of wearing baby barettes and a track jacket to go shoplift from walmart :(

bell_labs, Thursday, 3 July 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

And then the memories of fake cat eye glasses (fake like, non prescription) that I wore to the morrissey concert that my dad drove me to in boston all came rushing back

bell_labs, Thursday, 3 July 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

My dad also attended the concert but sat in a different section than my friend and I because he was a cool dad

bell_labs, Thursday, 3 July 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Aw, what tour was this?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 4 July 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

i am cleaning out my closet and i found two pairs of jeans i wore in the late 90s, both straight cut, originally dark denim but faded with wear.

the fly on these pants has to be at least 5 inches long.

La Lechera, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

Oh God Daria - that song!! I had completely forgotten about velocity girl and yet somehow as soon as I started I remembered all the words. Ahhhhhhhh. Mind fuck.

ENBB, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

"as soon as I started I remembered . . . "'

should have been as soon as "it" started.

ENBB, Monday, 7 July 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

then by the middle of the decade it seems like every other person (female, anyhow) was running around in those blouses that transform the wearer into an Albanian peasant who is 4 1/2 months pregnant.

. . . with those DAMN TURQUOISE PENDANTS worn in the hollow of the neck.

I don't know why but these infuriate me when I see people still wearing them.

felicity, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

There was a fad for turquoise pendants? I like tq very much, but I'm not a fan of necklace charms or drops that dangle from chains. Prefer giant wooden art-teacher jewelry, instead.

Laurel, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it went with the Rachel haircut and those blousy peasant tops c. 2002.

I'm down with the art-teacher, Anthro Lady beads.

felicity, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

In the very early nineties I tucked my jeans into my combat boots, wore flannel shirts and wore a red bandana on my freakin head.

"Dressing up" meant buttoning the top button of a rayon dress shirt.

By the mid-nineties I was into retro 70s stuff, and that was the point when my mother said she didn't understand my style any more.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:29 (seventeen years ago)
