Did you ever make a mix tape and put a pair of songs next to each other that made you go fuckin yeah? I did this with a Francoise Hardy song and Warm Leatherette by the Normal, and was pleasantly surprised when I played the tape back.

I recently made a tape for my girlfriend that I'm quite proud of. My favourite transitions:

- The Beach Boys - "Wouldn't It Be Nice" to Björk's "Possibly Maybe" (starting at the keyboard "bassline"), nice pair of titles, too;
- "Flying Birds" (by The RZA, from the Ghost Dog score) to "Brazil" by Frank Sinatra.

two weeks pass...
woooooo!! check out what I just discovered:
serge gainsbourg - 'Ah! Melody' (ie track 4 from the rekkid)
to the zombies - 'time of the season'

like, the serge track finishes on this sus4 chord, then the first chord of the zombies resolves it perfectly. 'scuse the geekspeak. like, it's one of those ones where you can't have any blank air between the tracks or it just doesn't work.

Best ever was Varttina's "Katariina" into Bloody Fist's "Cock Sucker." Rhythmically and tonally flawless, utter stylistic disjunction...

I am often doing transitions based on what key one song ends in...I don't know what a sus4 chord sounds like but I know exactly what you mean.

Says you, Petra!

Damian (Damian), Sunday, 13 October 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah well, i base my transitions on such air-fairy-theosophical-hippy-bollocks as 'energy' and 'feel'...now who's the raging mentalist?

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 14 October 2002 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I was just trying to be Bart Simpson ("Says you, woman") but I didn't wanna use that phrase and I ended up sounding really snarky. I've already proposed Oblique Mixing Strategies so whenever you're stuck for a song you can pull out a chance card and the card will determine what you do next (OK, now accusations of mentalism are justified, I believe).

Something I like very much ...

English folk singer Shirley Collins, accompanied only by handclapping, singing "Seven Yellow Gypsies" into Timbaland and Magoo's "People Like Myself". The latter's exquisite indian flute riff is almost the same melody as the Collins song.

I base it on whether it'll sound stupid or not.

More favourite segues on mixtapes of my own making:
the Cars - "Bye Bye Love" --> Wire "Map Ref 41N 93W" (with barely half a second in between the two)
XTC - "Battery Brides" --> Magazine "The Light Pours Out Of Me" (again, with very little space in between the two)

Schwingung (Damian), Saturday, 20 December 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Motorhead "Metropolis" (off No Sleep) into MBV "No More Sorry", applause STRAIGHT INTO shivering guitar sounded fantastic, as did the "I don't care" vs "love me black and blue" transition. Go me. I'm told Will Oldham and Rian Murphy's "Fall Again" into Brian Eno's "St. Elmo's Fire" was great too.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 21 December 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Another I made that I'm rather proud of - "I Am The Law" by the Human League into "Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors" by Radiohead. I have it on a CD I made and it's perfect. It sounds like BAM!

Best transition lately is probably The Wailers 'I Need You', into Dennis Brown 'Girl I've Got A Date'.

Its got a kinda twist to it. I love you but i gotta leave you sort of thing. Petra's right on the energy / flow thing. Its about the mix. Always trying to make the mix just right. Rule number one for any DJ must be selection. Regardless of if you have no records or your the worlds No 1 Hardhouse Superstar, a good mix is a beautiful thing.

PEACE

I did another fantastic one recently, Fugazi "Foreman's Dog" into Smiths "Stop Me if You Think You've Heard this One Before", tho the end of the Fugazi (one of those instrumental bits that segue into the next track) made it pretty easy. Sounded so so good, tho.
