Is it the sine qua non of style?

Discuss.

kind of yeah but there's too much pressure

it's like insecure can be hot too

but usually only onscreen

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

i mean what, you have to strut down the street to be fashionable? a lot of the time i just need to mosey. mosey and look hot.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

i'm not saying you have to work it, but i DO think you have to be comfortable and un-self-conscious

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

Confidence does not equal strutting. Not slouching would be a good start, though. So would pointing your feet straight ahead, instead of the duck waddle I see everywhere esp now that it's flip-flop season.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

kind of maybe yeah. but there's also the uncomfortable self-conscious geek thing.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but slouching is big for some looks.

also the duck waddle makes me gag.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, sorry, just having a posture rant at the moment!

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

you know what i'm talking about tho, that SLOUCH look in all the magazines. isn't that over yet?

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

always makes me think of pubescent girls trying to minimize their breasts

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

mm

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

I think I've ranted about the slouch before but I think it's a tall person thing? The idea being that if you are very tall and very thin in the torso, you can almost make your ribcage into a question mark (from the side). It's a sort of...hunch thing, a perversion of the 1930s sort of backwards slouch.

Anyway, you have to be tall and thin and sort of languid-looking for it to to work...and guess who is all of those things, most of the time! That's right! Models! So I think seeing Teh Slouch among the general population is an aspirational thing.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

ew it's just so old. it's like come up with a different pose.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

or it might just be because we work in front of computers all day with bad ergonomics! but let's blame it on the models, it's more fun.

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

ugh point taken

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

the model pose i haaaaaate is the "broken doll" pose as i believe tyra calls it

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

omg wait which one is that?

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

The posture I'm thinking of is above and beyond "not standing up straight" or "sits at a desk". It's...it sort of hollows out the chest, bends the torso backwards like a bow.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

Oh god the broken doll, is that the one where the head falls brokenly to one side and one foot turns in, possibly with the shoe coming half off? I don't even watch Tyra but I can guess.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

lol good guess

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

I like the image of Surmounter "moseying" down the street

dell, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

lol it's very relaxed usually! sometimes it's very deliberate, kind of like peyton in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle but without as much hip.

Surmounter, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

Kill it kill it before it strikes again
