Online shopping tips

I don't know how many more this thread will yield but I wanted to put it out there that before I order anything I always google for coupons/codes - may be a habit of yours but I've found that lots of people I mention this to have never tried it!

Good for clothing sales but also food delivery sometimes ;)

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

I may not have been clear though - pretty much any time you see a "Enter your Promo Code here" slot on an order form, I google "Fred Flare" "Promo code", using whatever wording they themselves use. "Swiss Chalet" "Appetizer Coupon" etc etc

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Would this thread be a good clearinghouse for little-known websites with cool and unusual apparel? I like a good style resource.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

finefine that is a good tip! i'll try to remember that next time i order something online

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

There we go! I wish I'd named it more generically. :P Maybe a mod can fix it?

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

really shouldn't spend the money but maybe by fall I will shell out for some isabel marant

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to push ebags here again because it's sale time and I can't remember if I get bonus $$ if you enter my e-mail or not but whatever, I still am impressed that they flat-out replaced my old two-shoulder dork patrol model when one of the zippers started to get out of wack, and all over the phone nonetheless

El Tomboto, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

also if you have a levi's store in your town, go there and ask for the card at the front that has your local free shipping code on it

El Tomboto, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

god if i lived in the states i wld be so in credit card debt due to online shopping, srsly.

the customs & brokerage fees on commercial parcels keep me in check up here in the north. i am like an online window shopper.

Time to revive the fascinator!

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

Also I am putting this sort of strange "vintage" shoe place on here because I found it once and then lost it for like a year until I stumbled across it again.

Remix Classic Vintage Footwear

Where they even get these shoes made, I have no idea.

laurel those fascinators look a little "crafty" to me? i dunno

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm not in a huge hurry to wear feathers in my hair, and some are better designed than others. But I'm intrigued.

Threadless threadless threadless, just in case someone doesn't know!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

tho these i guess are more practical for my toes

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

guys i love this board

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

finefine, please pardon me but i will hate on threadless all day

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

explain hate & love
i know v little abt threadless

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

i have a pair of remix shoes. the price/quality ratio is totally out of whack.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

that's disappointing :(

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really like how the submitted designs are chosen for production by public voting -- i understand it helps eliminate overhead because hey printers love some license-free art! and sales are almost guaranteed -- but the groupthink means the overall design direction is way twee for me, and i don't like how they reward the design winners in merchandise

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

threadless, that is

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

That's okay, Elmo.. but I can't hate. They let me buy a shirt that says "Rock out with your cock out!" That's my all-time favourite expression, and it's a subtle shirt.

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

tell me about it! i'm still kind of fuming about it. i mean, the shoes are very cute but within 4 months the heels have small cracks in the bottoms, the leather is incredibly creased, and one of the buckles broke (i fixed it up, though). of course - no returns.

I used to look at Impulse Seattle to find things I liked modeled on real people, but I think the whole blog design of a shopping website is really tedious. It's too hard to buy stuff.

I never buy stuff without looking for promo codes. But it sucks now that it is becoming more well known, retailers have been trying to block it from sites.

Yerac, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely a lot of the designs suck, and the trend seems to be going into more obscure/hispster crap like gigantic unicorns that take up 75% of the shirt, etc. But I love some of them:

All this said, I haven't been moved to order anything in the last year, but they have $10 sales very frequently!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Boooooo to Remix! I am sad and mad at them now.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

really shouldn't spend the money but maybe by fall I will shell out for some isabel marant
that looks like a nice store. love isabel marant

phil-two, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

yeah me too, but can't find it anywhere unless there is a secret DC store that has it? i don't think so..

impulse has a proper store now www.totokaelo.com, actually. i really want these opening ceremony oxford flats but I can't justify spending almost $200 on them.. i mean i could if i actually managed to save money but i'm not good at that

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

Boooooo to Remix! I am sad and mad at them now.
sigh :(

rrrobyn, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

it's kind of drag that you have to apply for a log-in on totokaelo!

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

er, kind of a.

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

I may not have been clear though - pretty much any time you see a "Enter your Promo Code here" slot on an order form, I google "Fred Flare" "Promo code", using whatever wording they themselves use. "Swiss Chalet" "Appetizer Coupon" etc etc

Yes!! I do this all the time and almost always find something whether it's free shipping or 10% off etc.

ENBB, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

bell_labs, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

june25-28, alexander wang sample sale...

phil-two, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

Okay this is a little odd but I frequently like the clothes at www.shukr.com. It's modest clothing for Muslim women in the West, and I think a fair bit of it is awesome. Like this top, which I imagine Lauren in:

http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/shukr_2007_28041352

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

I kind of want to buy one in every color and cut the sleeves off.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

how did you come across that?

lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

I think I was googling different names of traditional women's gear to find out exactly what they were (shalwar kameez, burqa, niqab, etc) and got interested in the horribleness of most of what was sold online -- holy tie-dyed polyester, Batman. The Shukr site was a welcome relief.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

omg Laurel, I buy from Shukr pretty frequently - I love the fit of their women's work shirts, they are cut just right for me. Their stuff is really high quality and well-made and decently priced.

Jaq, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

Hahah!! See, I'm in good company.

Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

I'm trying to remember how I found them - I think I was cracking up at those mormon modesty swimsuits and prom dresses and somehow chanced on a link. I wish their trouser legs weren't cut so darn wide! And I've been really tempted to get Mr. Jaq a thobe or galabiyya, but don't know if he'd buy into the look :)

Jaq, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

I always want to buy cute skirts and peter pan collar shirts from here

http://www.flynnohara.com/mHome.asp

but I am scared of the sizing and busting out of the tops with my womanly bosom.

Yerac, Thursday, 19 June 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like the jumpers could also be worthwhile if worn alone or with some ghetto t-shirt/tank.

Yerac, Thursday, 19 June 2008 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.retailmenot.com for coupon codes.

libcrypt, Thursday, 19 June 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

ok, so I gave in and bought some new shoes.

laurel i wld like to write a book abt religion and fashion with you please
it can be partly a picture book
everyone will think it is going to be 'contentious' when really it will be mostly 'interesting' and 'hey neat'

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

those shoes are great, daria!

rrrobyn, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

aren't they?? i hope they fit.. i really wish i could walk around in short skirts and massive heels a la the entire staff of paris vogue, but i give up, im sticking to menswear trousers & oxford flats on a daily basis

daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

etsy has a lot of cool stuff. i stumbles across this artist who also makes pseudo vintage jewelry and i LOVE it:

Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

I love that modest top from www.shukr.com but am so afraid of billowy tops after last summer's disaster wherein one of my co-workers asked if I was pregnant.

I've bought from an online store for hip mormons! lol. I think it's the longer length of the tops that drew me to it.

ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

rrobyn that sounds like a great coffee table book.

laurel, what was that site you were telling me about w/ the vintage reproduction dresses?

tehresa, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

There used to be more mod 60s repro stuff, I remember in like 1998-2000 drooling over it regularly, but now the only sites I can find are all for swing dresses/rockabilly.

mybabyjo.com/
stopstaringclothing.com
reddressshoppe.com

Stop Staring makes a lot of dresses and everyone else just sells them, pretty much. Except I ordered one of theirs recently and it was strong and well-constructed but there wasn't enough of it THERE: no lining, no facings, no interfacing for shape...it was like a high-school sewing project, just extremely competently sewn.

There are ton more, but they all look about the same, as far as I can tell. A good resource for pencil skirts.

Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:52 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wow Rubyredd that's an Etsy gem! Cute!
