I like turtlenecks and stretch pants and overalls. I liked snowboots all year round, but my mom wouldn't let me wear them exceot in the winter. I wore a lot of bandannas around my neck! And I liked anything nautical.

I hated dresses.

I was the oldest kid but I got a lot of hand-me-downs from my cousins, who were 7-8 years older than me, which meant I wore a lot of BUM Equipment sweatshirts that came down to my knees.

My favorite shirt when I was four had a laptop on it.

embarassingly similar to this from about age 12-17:

not technically a little kid but when i was a little kid i wore a lot of shit that didn't match each other so i'm not sure it was that different

I had a lot of dresses like this, worn with white ankles and double-T-strap Mary Janes, until probably middle school.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Monday, 29 September 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

A lot of brown corduroy and brown t-shirts. Then segue-ing into a more 80's worn-worn-worn blue jeans look, where I'd try to keep a pair of jeans as long as possible so that they'd be really faded and have gone through at the knees. Basically I was trying to look like Bender, while my mother was trying to dress me like Brian.

snoball, Monday, 29 September 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

i liked really big plastic earrings shaped like fruit. i had some ridiculous papier mache watermelons that i wore every day when i was 11.

i recently bought some earrings that kind of look like an abstract rendering of grapes, so i still love this genre of jewelry. i know no one else does.

ugly catholic school uniforms
lots of ugly pastel tops and shorts, in the summertime, from the cheapo department store.. we didn't have much money.. a lot of my favorite stuff was from yard sales. favorite color was kelly green & had a couple of green sweaters. i really really really wanted a pair of cowboy boots but never got them. :(

by the time middle school rolled around, uh.. hey i guess by then both my parents worked so we were less broke.
acid wash jeans, high tops (reebok, LA gear), scrunchy socks (sometimes two pair), esprit, those benetton t-shirts/sweatshirts in really bright colors, most everything oversized. turquoise, fuchsia, teal, jade green. ocean pacific tshirts. i had black hat that was, uh, very debbie gibson.. had a pretty great jade green cotton vest, i wish i still had that. oh and one of those ridiculous 80's charm necklaces.

one of those ridiculous 80's charm necklaces.

the plastic kind? i had one in like, 4th grade. it was my pride and joy.

one of my favorite outfits in middle school was an oversized turquoise guess t-shirt and a white denim skirt (also guess) that had a zipper going from top to bottom, worn with reebok high-tops. this ensemble was quite chic at my public school, but when i transferred to private and wore it on out-of-uniform day, jennifer l4ng took me aside and told me that i looked tacky. the skirt was retired. she did me a favor, i think.

lauren, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 13:24 (seventeen years ago)

i dont remember charm necklaces. i do remember candy necklaces.

5th/6th grade was as close to Madonna as I could get: fingerless lace gloves, stretch lace tops, wide belts and many re-purposed crucifixes.

Junior high saw my skate punk phase and by high school I just really didn't give a shit.

my catholic school uniform color was DARK BROWN. by the time i got to the middle school w/cute pleated skirts and different school colors it was pretty stylin, but grade school, it was ugly dark brown plaid jumper + ugly dark brown cardigan sweater. very, very bad.

wish i still had some of my late 80's/early 90's blazers/cardigans/button downs w/big shoulder pads, pleated shorts, chunky costume jewelry

http://september29th.com/uploaded_images/heathers-762222.gif

growing up in rural nowhere we were prob 1-2 years behind major cities on any given trend to be honest.

76 yards into the wind! (daria-g), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

lauren that is pretty much the exact charm necklace i had. would have been about 4th grade for me too. i think the nuns banned those from school eventually, like they did everything trendy such as garbage pail kids cards and snap bracelets

76 yards into the wind! (daria-g), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

we didn't have nuns, but snap bracelets were banned due to that mythical kid who got his eye put out by one.

lauren, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

There was a store in town that sold those plastic necklaces and charms, but my mother thought they were frivolous and (she was right) disposable, and we didn't have money for disposable frivolousness. I remember being very sad and fingering the glossy plastic telephones and bananas and other random shit.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

I had that necklace! I had many of those same charms, too.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

I was upset at the time that I never got to have big bangs, but now I think that is probably for the best...

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

I do not remember those charm necklaces but "friendship pins" (little safety pins with beads) were big around fourth grade.

Our DJ's better than all these bands (Susan), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

I remember friendship pins, but the thing that really got going among the high-schoolers when I was only in elementary skoo was friendship pins made on fishing tackle clips, the little brass ones that hold lures on. With the same tiny beads in various colors.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

OMG that charm necklace. I definitely had one of those. My favorite charm was a little notebook that had actual tiny paper pages. I loved that so much.

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

In middle school I had braces and huge sally jesse raphael glasses only mine were green. I also had a lot of perms which was a very bad idea. I remember having acid washed bugle boy jeans that had zippers at the ankles that I loved. My animal thing manifested itself in many a t shirt but also a panda bear bolo tie which I wore with a huge purple sweatshirt. Oh the shame.

I had the catholic school uniform in HS which saved me a little I think.

From 17 - 20 I loved huge skater jeans/Jncos, ringer tees, ball chain necklaces, polyester shirts, short plaid skirts and Docs.

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

Does anyone remember when Banana Republic did like animal safari T shirts? I remember those being very big at my school.

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)

yup. i had one that i wore with khaki shorts and tretorns. that's going back a ways, though.

lauren, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

lol Tretorns! I remember when those were big too. That must have been around 5th grade for me.

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

Were JAMS big at anyone else's school? I remember being terribly depressed that I could not afford these.

Our DJ's better than all these bands (Susan), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

Crazy printed shorts, right? I definitely remember Jams but can't remember if I actually had any or not.

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Were Z Cavaricci's big anywhere else or was that just a Long Island thing?

http://hauteconcept.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/z-cavaricci-42708-1.gif

Fr. Jemima Racktouey (ENBB), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

oh, tretorns. i never was cool enough to get a pair of those. k-swiss were big for a while at my school. i am pretty sure i had an oversize banana republic safari tshirt. banana used to be all right, i wish they still did safari stuff.

z cavaricci yes, though also more toned-down style of pleated high waist pants (palmettos) always cuffed tight at the bottom. note, this only seemed to happen on dress-down days @ catholic school where everyone was real snooty about clothes, i was very relieved to switch to public school and quickly realize that nobody was going to make fun of me all day long for not cuffing my jeans right. which @ catholic school they definitely would.

as a kid I also remember many many episodes of drama in which there was some church or school event & my mother would make me get some foofy dress and i hated most/all of the choices. jessica mcclintock/gunne sax HATE

76 yards into the wind! (daria-g), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

Sigh. The girls who actually played tennis had KSwiss and Tretorns, but I wore plain white not-Keds from the local equivalent of K-Mart. And when they got dirty, we washed them (I would have sworn my friend Jenny Schw@lm got new ones). My life was so sad!

No seriously we had extravagant "formal" clothes, mostly because my mother sewed, and we had utilitarian "everyday" clothes, nice school stuff but v v un-trendy, much to my dismay. Besides, it was the era of oversized Tshirts, so everything I have left over from my past life is in size XL.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah - the plain white shoes - "bobos"

http://bobos.urbanup.com/26694

76 yards into the wind! (daria-g), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

We still call things "bobos"

Our DJ's better than all these bands (Susan), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

"Bobo" never made it to my neck of the woods. I think we just called them tennis shoes, maybe tennies?

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

I use "bobo" as a generic term for anything "bootleg".

Our DJ's better than all these bands (Susan), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha - jessica mclintock/gunne sax! ah, the tiered skirts and velvet bodices.

lauren, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

the ones i had were just basic cotton floral dresses with like a lace collar
totally hideous
my mother is very conservative

76 yards into the wind! (daria-g), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

In fourth and fifth grade, my dreams of being a B-Boy basically meant "wear lots of loud colors that clash with each other."

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

i have no words for how much i loved my offwhite lace victorian gunne sax dress as a child. it was right next to my brown wool lederhosen, purple velvet suspender dress and gypsy headgear in the "favorite duds" category. most of the time i wore shirts and pants, though. just boring ones.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha - jessica mclintock/gunne sax! ah, the tiered skirts and velvet bodices.

I wore a black velvet bodiced dress with a black and white plaid bubble skirt bottom to my freshman year Christmas formal. I was 13 so that's pretty much still a kid esp the kind I was. I loved that dress so much but unfortunately it didn't stop my date from making out with the girl we carpooled with. :-(

UGH cuffed jeans. Such traumatic flashbacks.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 2 October 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

Bright Future (sunny successor), Thursday, 2 October 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yes and sometimes they had lattice-work weaving down the sides? Toootally. The girls who wore those and had the biggest hair were my babysitters. They also dated high school-aged drummers, back when drummers used to attach roach clips with leather thongs and colored feathers to their sticks, to be flashy when they spun.

Oh I was so adoring.
