It's getting chillier, and I decide that I could use a sweatshirt to throw on for things like walking the dog. Not a hoodie, nothing zippered or cardigan-style, just a simple old-school 1950s-gym-style pullover sweatshirt. If ever there were a reason to go to American Apparel, this is it. I go to American Apparel: they do not carry such things anymore. They sell button-downs and overpriced fake Levis now, but not sweatshirts. I sputter in disbelief at them: b-b-but that's, like, what you sell, I thought!
Four or five stores later, I still have not come across a plain solid-colored no-print pullover sweatshirt.

I blame: HOODIE HEGEMONY
― nabisco, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
Go to like an Oshman's or Dick's Sporting Goods or Academy (not sure which if any of these is in yr area). Russel, Hanes, Nike, Fruit of the Loom all make these. I love em and they seem to be easy to find where I live.

wait what kind of dog is it
― Mr. Que, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
the boys' dept. at sears. my favorite pullover sweatshirts have come from there. thanks to the childhood obesity epidemic, a reasonable-sized adult can easily fit into the larger sizes.
― lauren, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
i'm sure you can get one at wal-mart
― Jordan, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe try a sporting goods store, for a Champion brand plain one?
― Jaq, Monday, 29 September 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)
Haha Jordan that is a perverse joke: I will admit that my inability to find this item is totally a Manhattan issue.
I've looked in at sporting-goods places and Foot Lockers and whatnot, but they're always low on plain ones, and they always have too much touristy elastic around the waist and cuffs, and are generally ... umm, maybe my problem here is that I'm looking for a semi-stylish sweatshirt. Hence the American Apparel anger: the ONE main thing that place had going for it was that you could at least buy something like a good-looking plain sweatshirt.
― nabisco, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)
P.S. It is a Havanese, but the sweatshirt doesn't need to match the dog or anything

also - ha ha! you have to walk a girly dog!
i was just being a jerk/trying to be funny re: the dog. and i gotta say--yeah i don't see these sorts of things anymore. it's all hoodies
― Mr. Que, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)
Garments we can't find? I keep looking for ladies' vests and cardigans and I can't find any in my size (size Large, big deal, right?) that I like. I also think that there is a serious lack of pretty, simple silver jewellery. I think I need to spend more time on Etsy.
Anyway, my Grandma bought me a plain purple sweatshirt at Wal*Mart, it's warm, soft, and needs no zipper.
― Finefinemusic, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)
Doggie is not girly! He is super boyish, actually. Like an enthusiastic but slightly dimwitted little boy. Havaneses are so totally not lapdogs -- I think they're partly meant for herding poultry (!!), which might explain why this one loves chicken and running in circles, and occasionally thinks he can beat up pitbull puppies.
APC is probably too pricey for a day-off / dogwalking sweatshirt, but that's nice-looking.
― nabisco, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:36 (seventeen years ago)
ok, i didn't say that his personality is girly. i'm sure he's a rugged little guy (the tiny ones are often quite tough). but they are kind of girly-looking, come on:

Huh, that seems ungirly to me, but I grew up with Shih-Tzu/terriers, so maybe my standards are different. Plus they just seem less "girly" when you catch them humping the cat and they look up at you with dopey Will Ferrell looks on their faces.

nbs have u checked out uniqlo or h&m? thats whered i go prob

(Also this one has longer hair and constantly has the shaggy, slackery look of a stoned skater type, in that sheepdoggy way.)
Haven't checked Uniqlo, can't recall seeing anything along these lines at any H&M

dark red patent leather flat chunky ish mary janes in a size larger than would fit a 4 year old child.
― Bright Future (sunny successor), Monday, 29 September 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
i guess that should tell me something
I don't think wanting options beyond a puffy college sweatshirt is particularly diva-ish -- this used to be simple, I had several of these, things that were basically sweaters that happened to be sweatshirts. But I will keep you updated on my progress and the raging masculinity of my dog.

seriously nabisco: Fruit of the Loom/Hanes sweatshirts at walmart/local cheapie place. I went through a blue sweatshirt phase in high school, I even bought a Fruit of the Loom one at a stall at the Reading festival! Buy a size smaller and they are not puffy anymore (though you may sacrifice sleve length, but this is always a problem for me anyway).
― Finefinemusic, Monday, 29 September 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
walmart/local cheapie place = yeah, like I said, I think I am having one of those problems you only have in downtown Manhattan
― nabisco, Monday, 29 September 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

there is a target at atlantic/pacific. if you take the n/q it is a very short trip. i have bought hanes undershirts there as well as champion stuff, so don't be like gabbneb and take a trip to brooklyn, yo!

or, like lauren said, go to the astor place k-mart.
Those Danskos are pretty red in real life, sunny (the Clog Factory on 1st Ave has them in the window - v. v. shiny), but a darker shade than those. But also, not flat, since those stapled clogs are about a 2" heel.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)
My dad has some great original really 50s ones that I used to wear--all faded grey and nubby--come to think of it, I haven't noticed the non-hooded version lately--but what do you have against hoods? My prescription: get a hooded version for the present, and keep an eye out at thrift stores for the version you are looking for.
― Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)
i really want a black zip up cardigan. like a hoody. but a zip up. whenever you find them, they always have that not-quite-pocket-not-quite-pouch thing, which is made useless by the intersecting zip. i used to have this slightly stretchy, thin, cotton-y, gap cardy, with a cool hood, but it was much desired and eventually ravaged through lend-outs. they probably cost like $20 when you can find them.
― schlump, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 13:22 (seventeen years ago)
nabisco I was in american apparel a couple days ago and they def have plain pullover sweatshirts exactly like that. however they were on the rack with a bunch of hoodies and easy to overlook.

ever since a friend pointed out that dude in "freaks and geeks" was wearing a sweater vest that wasn't a v-neck, but rather the rounded thing that follows the outline of a wife-beater, i've been looking in goodwills nigh and far for one of 'em. apparently they are beyond extinct. bummah.
