all these poncho/shawl/cape things are kind of bothering me. especially the ones that appear to be of a fleecey material not unlike throws seen on my aunt's couch. how does this look ok to people? discus.

at what point does a bathrobe become a coat?
― the whoopi goldberg variations (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 23 October 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)
I think that the presence of sleeves that surround the arms = coat

At what time does a scarf become a blanket?

another very valid question!

A coat becomes a blanket when you have missed the last train, there are not buses, you can't actually work out where you are anyway, and there is a handy bench/station concourse/piece of grass/sheltered culvert.
Although check the bench is not of the variety that has been improved by the council by putting an arm rest down the middle. This device offends doubly, not just because of the mean-minded idea that decides those without a home should be prevented from finding somewhere to sleep that is better than the ground, but also because it pretends to be an improvement - as if benches needed armrests anyway.
Far better it would be if the council or local housing trust employed someone, perhaps one of the very homeless who they are trying to eradicated, to each night just after closing time, attach a rack of spikes to each bench in its ward, thus preventing layabouts, loiterers and loblolloy (sp?) men from assuming an offensively supine state for the night.

apparently, my boyfriend used to wear a big fucking wool blanket around the wheaton campus during manic episodes, only to be asked by rich bitches "WHERE on EARTH did you get that gorgeous WRAP?"

my sister and i have a friend who was a revolutionary in the 70s who cut a hole in a leopard skin car blanket and turned into a poncho, he regrets telling us about it, it was the 80s when he told us and we still go on and on about it, whenever we see him we always beg him to tell us the story again even though the whole story is just that he folded the blanket in half and cut a semicircle shape in it and then opened it out and put his head through the hole.
― estela, Friday, 24 October 2008 03:28 (seventeen years ago)

I used to know someone who walked with a walking stick and wore large wraps/capes as winter-outerwear. He was an odd duck for sure. Also: very gay, and very "theatre". But, well...awesome.

Well, he's dead now so the appalling eyesore of a man in a cape has been taken out of the world, don't worry.

No no it was more a reference to the fact that my friends have a 10-year history of making fun of him, reasonably enough, I think, because he was definitely uh different on purpose. It was kind of funny that after he died, they were all retracting things left and right which really wasn't necessary: the fact that he's not alive now doesn't change how he actually was!

so, capes. i like the idea of a cape but don't want to look like a weeble-wobble. not a good idea for the rounder, shorter folks? what do you think?
― lauren, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)
capes = nopes
It is impossible to wear a cape without looking like you are about to either:

we joke here, but i ruined my share of 'undergear' catalogs in my youth
the mystery of why my dad ever received such catalogs in the first place persists to this day, through the exertion of willful ignorance.
