Please help me understand runway applause

You know, like when one model turns the corner and suddenly EVERYONE in the audience starts clapping in unison, like somehow they ALL know that THIS outfit is one of "the ones" to be applauded. What in hell dictates this phenomenon? Do people clap every nth outfit? Do a select, elite few initiate the clapping with everyone quickly following? Does Anna raise her index finger? I'm highly skeptical that certain select outfits just happen to have some sort of unspoken je ne sais quois that's just magically perceived by all.

i mean i don't even know that this always happens. sometimes people don't clap much, right?

Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

Haha it's when the designer brings out his/her well-known hit from three collections back

I've never been to a runway event so whadda I know. But people clap after musical events or great oratorical performances, and so on. If fashion is also art, it doesn't seem like a stretch that certain works would get applauded?

But WHICH works? I'm talking about during the show, not after it.

Um. It could of course all be totally up its own ass, that wouldn't surprise me at all in the field of fashion, but there's always a chance that if you know about a design house's history etc etc and have been looking at these things for years, you know when you see a nod to something famous from the vaults, or you know what someone has broken out, or something is "revolutionary", etc. Maybe?

I mean, how do you when a musician is technically brilliant and has been amazing on a solo or an especially hard musical thing?

Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

they clap when the outfit is good, right?

Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

no, it's all based on a special pre-arranged signal broadcast at frequencies that only fashionistas can hear

oh no I've said too much

also, people tend to start clapping immediately if other people start up. they don't want to look out of it.
