the closest i've come is this girl i was seeing (not that seriously, either) started laughing one day while looking in a catalog. "Oh my God," she said, "this t-shirt is so funny! Will you look at this? It's a t-shirt that says RUNS WITH SCISSORS on the front. Isn't that HILARIOUS?"

This was years and years ago wayyyyy before the Augustine Burroughs book. I left town a few days later and didn't call her when I got back--for a host of reasons, but her insiting that the t-shirt was HILARIOUS sealed the deal.

the only example i can think of from my life is w/r/t really bad tattoos...like a bunch of emo band names in olde english lettering... but that was only a couple of dates and there were other issues there too.

i mean the whole trick w/ coming up w/ an excuse to break up is to come up w/ something that doesnt hurt their feelings, where "i reject the choices you make regarding your appearance" does exactly the opposite

i once dated a guy with terrible terrible tattoos and he was the one who dumped ME. in comforting myself about the dumping, i used his terrible tattoos as consolation. not sure if this counts.

also i once avoided calls from a guy because he had a vanity license plate that said "SKA GUY" but i felt bad about that later because he was a nice person.

(this was 1997)

ok, that is one thing i would NOT put up with.

my boyfriend just basically refuses to shop for himself or spend money on clothes. i bought him a new pair of jeans for his birthday because his other pair had a hole in the crotch. i might buy him like, a polo shirt to wear when he meets my mom.

I just don't encourage men to even flirt with me or think it's going anywhere if they dress too badly. So the issue never arises. That said, though, I have my own definitions of "too horribly" and they include both formal and informal looks, it's nothing to do with dressing "up" or anything.

there are two varieties of questionable style that we're talking about here (or i am, at least)
(1) the people who try way too hard and in the wrong direction (ie, bad tattoos, SKA GUY, overly gelled hair, etc)

(2) the don't-give-a-fuck people who are like "yeah, i've worn this yellowed Ren and Stimpy t-shirt since 1993...and?"

i sort of appreciate the latter's lack of concern, whereas the former can be embarrassing.

yeah the latter is preferable for sure. the second is kind of endearing.

I KNOW. (1) wore sweatpants on a date (2) decided to embellish with shorts? they were like soccer shorts (umbros?) and this was like 1992 so hey, an ounce of forgiveness for the times, but still. totally, completely unredeemable BECAUSE it was a deliberate decision, not one made out of apathy or lack of interest. he had to TRY to put those shorts on over the sweatpants.

btw they were gathered-at-the-ankle-with-elastic sweats, not like track pants.

I mean, people with no body fat who live in cold places and want to be warm should TOTALLY wear long underwear under their jeans. I think that's a valid lifestyle choice.

We used to wear sweatpants under our high school P.E. uniform shorts in our North Chicago suburban high school when it was cold outside. We were forbidden from wearing the sweats over.

we wore sweatpants under shorts during PE/outdoor education, too. the reason strikes me now as being really silly: if you had school logo sweatpants, then you could wear them on their own, but if you didn't then you had to wear your school shorts over them.

for the first time in my whole life i have a boyfriend whose style i love - he's super casual, wears jeans/shorts and t-shirts, but he wears t-shirts that are the right size (not super huge and not tight), and jeans/pants/shorts that fit well. and sneakers/trainers that are cool. like someone said above, i don't want my man to be super fashion aware, and all about style, i just want him to not look like a douche and embarrass me. in fact, he's def influenced my fashion choices more than i've influenced him: previously, i would NEVER have considered outdoor/sporty wear but he has swayed me to the darkside.

i've had to take every single one of my ex bfs shopping: two of them insisted on wearing fuckin tapered jeans which i will NOT ABIDE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. that shit needs to die a sudden death. it's one thing to be a cool indie dude or whatever wearing that shit with all the other cool stuff, but OMG my ex bfs were such terrible dressers. when i took my last ex shopping for a new pair of jeans ('new jeans, or you start walking 10 feet behind me in public') i picked out a pair that had the SLIGHTEST hint of bootleg and he was all WTF THESE ARE HIPPY FLARED BELLBOTTOMS. fucking loser.

bf also wears 'knickers' or male capri pants specially designed for cycling, which he says everyone gives him shit for wearing, but i don't why, i think he looks particularly hot in them (he's got beautiful, BEAUTIFUL legs, and such nice ankles).

I refuse to do the "shopping with", I don't really understand the wider range of menswear in detail and I want my bfs to have style of their own (or to be developing it), I have no interest in being responsible for dressing them. Plus, I don't know, it's too cliche! I don't like the idea of taking my men shopping.

I'm not somebody who is particularly picky what style you have but if it's not well defined and not somehat important to you, it's not going to work out between us, seeing as I dress the way that I do and am almost completely impervious to outside suggestion. It's never been so much that I would be inclined to break up with someone because of their style as never to bother going out with them in the first place, though I can attest to the fact that I have seen a whole host of ladies for whom my first thought was, 'We really need to get you out of those clothes.'

I have actually been wrathful with the young boys lately because they have no manners WHATSOEVER about riding you down on the sidewalks on their bikes and scooters. They literally look at me and then ride a 2-foot wide tricycle directly at me on a 3-ft wide sidewalk. I'm not sure what they think I'm supposed to do, but I don't mind disappointing them.

fact: the bike shop/store in my neighbourhood does quite good business fixing the small bicycles & tricycles of such children. what they are doing to break them so often, i do not exactly know.

Re maintenance, I think part of it is that they pass them down and/or between families v frequently -- I never see boys over 13 (oh that magical age) riding bikes, so bikes get transferred to next youngest brother/s (never to girls, I have seen exactly one girl riding a bike and she was about 5 and looked fiercely, angrily focused on catching up to the boys ahead of her -- I wish her luck). Besides that, the young boys in my nabe seem to play basically unsupervised -- have seen kids riding around on 100% flat tires, for instance.
