how much influence do movies/tv have on your personal style

i was rewatching the class this morning and thought about how dope françois bégaudeau's look is in this movie. i mean its almost a stretch to call it a look its so understated but its nearly 100%. only misstep was a weird knit t-shirt thing in a dirty cream color and sometimes some bland-ish overly typical stuff like the "good" straight-leg jean with long sleeved stretch cotton t-shirt. but even w/that stuff the fit is so excellent esp in the upper body that it manages to look professional and not a little bit elegant

so basically i was thinking abt how influential tv and esp film is on how i dress. i basically straight stole looks from the ivan char in a christmas tale and i sometime attempt marcello mastroianni's resort-professor look from 8.5. or just small things like tie pairings or color ideas from stephen cambell moore in bright young things. theres probably tonnes more but im curious if anyone else does this?

I was sort of wondering what's up with Bégaudeau's shoulder zip over the shoulder.

Almodovar's early stuff had a lot of influence on my (lack of) style. I'm talking garish color scheme, short hemlines and big shoulders.

warmsherry, Sunday, 15 March 2009 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

movies had a huge HUGE influence in the 80s (i think i dressed like jamie gertz in lost boys for about a year straight) but not so much in the 90s when it was all about dressing like kat bjelland. since then its been all about whatever is clean.

oh when i was 16 (late 80s) i went through a period of dressing in white and wearing a red ribbon in my hair while i swanned about imagining i was tess of the d'urbervilles.

i used to wear black tights, boots, miniskirt, and black turtleneck like it was a uniform at one point but that was before rachael wore the same thing all the time on friends. its still a winning combo.

when i was a lil kid, like ages 4-6, i thought michael j fox looked so badass in back 2 the future, especially the orange lifejacket/vest thingie

i was just like damn that is the dude

so for years all my childhood fantasies of being a badass included me wearing an orange lifejacket

in high school my friend joe got a puffy orange vest like the mj fox one and one night he just wore the vest, with no shirt underneath--hes sort of a short chubby kid--and we went to get sandwiches and passed by this big group of princeton crew/lacrosse jocks (all like 6 foot and built) and theyre all sort of staring at joe and you know theyre about to say something and he just looks one of them in the eyes and goes "whats up fag" and keeps walking

I wanted to be Alain Delon after seeing Le Samurai as a 16-year-old.

Sadly this turned out to be impossible. Not only would i have looked a tool in fedora and rain mac, any attempts I made to preserve an ice cool exterior despite humankind's existential predicament were thwarted by my inherently excitable and talkative nature.

Chiseled good looks FAIL as well.

there aren't really good pix of this on the internets but L'ami de mon amie is realllly cool, not so much the plot, but the spaces in the film & the fact that all the principal characters (i don't even know if there are others than the main four, it's pretty minimal) are wearing different color combinations that coordinate by scene - red, yellow, green, and blue. i like
