i really need to get some tweezers...

xpost Your face.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

I love cosmetics bags. I have the bad habit of accumulating them in different sizes for different contents and uses -- small one goes in my purse for day-to-day, medium one is for traveling, the large one is for things I keep in storage, and so on.

Now if I could only find a reasonable way to pack my giant costume jewelry...travel cases and etc are always made for tiny pieces.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

You know what I love about you, Ramz, is that you're so aggressively femme that you're more masculine than almost anyone.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

gee, thank you. i mean, this is just the stuff i like :)

Laurel, i love cosemtics bags too. my boyfriend's mom always gives me her free samples. the one i'm carrying right now is deep red alligator skin, and it carries a lot, which is very helpful.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

3 foundation sticks in various shades (my color, too dark, too light)
several discs of pancake in different colors (red, black, white, brown, tan)
setting powder w/ puff
makeup remover
2 eyebrow pencils (black/brown)
beard sponge
4 application sponges

Since buying this shit 5 years ago, I have used it twice. lol theater

suddenly, everything was dark and smelly (HI DERE), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

I'm absolutely not being facetious. I'm not interested in lip gloss, but I'd be happy if it suddenly became societally mandatory for men to wear it all the time.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

question: shaving bag =/= makeup bag, right?

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

no, i totally didn't think you were! <3

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

(so nice dropping $80+ on a stage kit to be told in every single show "yeah the black guys don't need makeup, you look fine from the house")

(also technically speaking it's all still in the box it came in and not a makeup bag)

suddenly, everything was dark and smelly (HI DERE), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

Eric, i think shaving bags are acceptable for the purposes of this thread.

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:53 (fifteen years ago)

I don't have any makeup in my shaving bag!

"beard sponge"

what is this

there is no there there (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

dan, i would wear it anyway! give you that extra somethin

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

I could probably stand to carry with me a little bit of concealer.

sir-mounter (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 July 2009 16:09 (fifteen years ago)

A beard sponge is basically a super-porous sponge that looks like it's made out of thin elastic fibers that, when you put it in makeup and dab it on your cheeks, chin and upper lip, gives the impression from off-stage that you have closely-trimmed facial hair.

It is not related to the organism named "beard sponge" as far as I know.

suddenly, everything was dark and smelly (HI DERE), Thursday, 16 July 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

I guess it's technically called a "stipple sponge":

best boos te kijken (ENBB), Thursday, 16 July 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

My daily bag:

liquid foundation w SPF 18
pressed powder
liquid eyeliner
mascara
lavender cake eyeshadow
silver & black creme shadows
white pencil for brightening eyes
sharpener
blush stick
eyelash comb

To be perfectly honest, I wash and moisturize with whatever liquid soap/bottle of lotion is in the bathroom at work when I touch-up at 5pm, and I'm not above dabbing a little chapstick/Burt's Bees on the dry spots if absolutely necessary.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 16 July 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

i have a larger bag that i store stuff not in current rotation in, but right now in my 'throw in purse bag' (which needs to be replaced v v badly as it has a rip):

almay bright eyes concealer
pressed powder compact
lip liner
lip primer (the stick kind, not a gel/cream - it's kind of like chapstick)
eye shadow (sephora mat no 05 - it's a super light lavender - goes on pretty neutral on my skin tone)
neutrogena soothing lipsheers in fresh rose
dior addict gloss
tweezers
nars orgasm blush (represent enbb my blush sister!)
stila convertible eye color (ie eyeliner) in berry
mac eyeliner in bordeauxline

also i keep a pot of lip balm in outside pocket of my purse for easy access.

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:24 (fifteen years ago)

What kind of pressed powder? I need a new one.

best boos te kijken (ENBB), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

covergirl advanced radiance (lol this means i am old)
it's ok. a little too 'i just put on powder' and i generally take a brush over the applicator pad and brush it on. not the greatest.

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

i can never find a pressed powder i like but i end up sticking with them because i don't want to spend money on another one i might not like.

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

LOL exactly.

Yeah, I want to avoid the just put on powder look. I'm also using CG and it's too cakey but I feel like if I want something light/super fine then I'm going to have to shell out $$$.

best boos te kijken (ENBB), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

tza i feel like you have such a face for powder

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

also tbh, i always use a brush instead of the applicator pad

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think back to the days of the pad and laugh and laugh and laugh

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

it must have looked so funny!

surm, i have powder issues because a) i don't want to look too cakey and b) my skin is pale and i have a hard time finding the right balance between not too yellow and not so light that i look ghostly

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

For me, powder just takes the shine off my oily skin. I'm not asking it to really "even out" my skin tone or anything.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

actually for home finishing, i use this makeup forever powder that gives a great finish.

tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

It doesn't matter what I use, my skin soaks it up or sweats it off within a couple of hours. Blot and re-apply, repeat x 8 throughout the day unless I'm outside in the elements.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 16 July 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

wow i don't even know what half this stuff is! i feel like i'm missing out :(

i don't even have a makeup bag, but if i did it would contain:
light bronzer (some generic brand from nz)
black mascara (maybelline)
dark brown eyeliner (also generic)
chapstick
tweezers

where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Thursday, 16 July 2009 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even know what half this stuff is either :( :( I am particularly befuddled by 'eye concealer' and 'lip primer'.

I am the worst at being a girl ever. All I own is a jar of mac foundation (possibly concealer, I don't know the difference) that's too yellow for my skin (that's what I get for trusting a teenage salesgirl wearing about eight different colours of eyeshadow at once), a black eyeliner pencil, and a thing of mascara because my eyelashes are pretty much non-existent. But I hardly ever use any of them. And when I do, it's probably not correctly. I skipped that whole learning-to-put-on-makeup phase in my teens in favour of playing too many video games by myself.

My makeups are in a ziploc bag in my bathroom.

FAIL

salsa shark, Thursday, 16 July 2009 21:34 (fifteen years ago)

an undereye concealer being more yellow than your skin would make sense

dont blaze me dro (roxymuzak), Saturday, 18 July 2009 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

yes, isn't that supposed to counter any red?

tehresa, Saturday, 18 July 2009 21:59 (fifteen years ago)

or is that green? i dont remember, but i thought yellow countered like blue bruisey-looking or undereye circle stuff

dont blaze me dro (roxymuzak), Saturday, 18 July 2009 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

i used to love black honey and then somehow, it changed? the color does not look like it used to imo. now more brownish.

tehresa, Monday, 27 July 2009 00:45 (fifteen years ago)

it sounds really intriguing from the name

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 July 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

The best part about black honey is that it's v sheer and really is flattering on everyone. I don't know if that would still be true if Tza is right about the color change.

ENBostonBuns (ENBB), Monday, 27 July 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

i just looked it up. i think im gonna try some.

kid cruti (roxymuzak), Monday, 27 July 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah it is kind of a no-fail color; enough pigment so that it looks like you have *something* on (unlike the NARS dolce vita, at least on me), but sheer enough and with a kind of skinny stick configuration that makes it easy to pull off sans lip liner and lip brush.

Basically a good stand in for chapstick.

quincie, Monday, 27 July 2009 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

yeah that's how i used to feel about it but since i noticed a subtle change in it i can't pull it off anymore :(

tehresa, Monday, 27 July 2009 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

Note: at Sephora they had it in both the traditional silver stick format and then also some "super shiny" sticky gloss in a squeeze tube format, which I suggest avoiding.

It had been years since I last bought one, so I'm not a very reliable source for a color comparison--if anything, I feel like my most recent stick is less pigmented???

quincie, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

i once had it in gloss form like this (not sparkly, just that kind of applicator) and wasn't nearly as good as the sheer stick form.

tehresa, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

weird! i felt like the stick i bought last year was MORE pigmented!
anyway i had an incident in which it broke and i threw it out and never got a new one because the color made me a little O_o

tehresa, Monday, 27 July 2009 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

ooh i want to buy more make-up! and put it in many different make-up bags! haha
my standard take-to-work make-up bag is a small blue fake-leather zippered clutch purse that contains:
- Make-up Forever HD Foundation (which works as concealer, for me, for end-of-day-going-out touchups. am still ambivalent abt undereye concealer, maybe haven't found the right one, need something super creamy, i feel, but i don't have super dark circles or anything, so this foundation works fine!)
- Clinique stay-matte sheer pressed powder in invisible matte
- CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain x2 colours - this stuff is great! cheap and cheerful and stays put!
- little pot of lanolin for lips, etc (nothing else works; i think i have talked abt this is previous posts, my lanolin love, lol)
- sample size Clinque Turnaround Concentrate (works fine as a moisturizer too - i really love this stuff, makes make-up go on really nicely)
- sample size Clinique body butter
- small comb
- 3 usb keys of various sizes
- pen
lol
my mascara seems to stay put all day just fine. i shld throw an eyeliner in there maybe, for evening dramaaa. and blush touchup is a good idea too, but i only even started wearing blush, like, 5 months ago so its powers are still sinking in. maybe also one of the dior lipsticks, which are all evening glamour. but it's summer after all, so will hold off on the low-maintenance glamour until fall (and new dance/theatre/show/etc etc season...)

i tried on some awesome teal eyeshadow the other day that actually looked kind of natural on. want.

paragon of incalescence (rrrobyn), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

My latest want is navy and maroon cake eyeliners--the kind you wet with a little brush and paint on. Any idea who makes such a thing? I already have black and brown--both ancient and likely discontinued estee lauders.

quincie, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

I used to use a black or dk brown eyeshadow for eyeliner with a wet brush, but a whole day of normal oil & sweating was DEATH to its sticking power. I went over to the liquid liner camp a few years and I will never go back.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

The only make up I take with me away from my house is lip gloss (Benefit Next Question Please) and these:

http://askamakeupguru.com/blog/uploaded/palladioricepaper.jpg

I have a make up box at home with my regular daily make up and all kinds of crap that I should probably throw out because it is creeping up on being like eight years old, some of it.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

I love blotting papers! I usually keep some in my work drawer and/or my handbag. I also carry, and please don't roll eyes too far out of sockets, but...a handkerchief. For dabbing the sweat off while waiting for the train, etc. I got a few vintage ones with hand-work edges for like $2 each.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

I carry a handkerchief, too! By the time I get to the bus/train stop in the morning, my upper lip/back of my neck is always sweaty and I feel gross and I could use a tissue, but then I will have tissue bits stuck somewhere that I don't realize until it's too late. Carrying a handkerchief just feels much more civilized.

I love those blotting papers, too. I just started using them and it was definitely a "where have you been all my life???" moment.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

You ladies are classy. I just use tissue. I'm gonna have to get a handkerchief now! Speaking of - it's so horrible and humid outside. I am not looking forward to my commute home. :-(

ENBB, Monday, 27 July 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

For casual things and/or more athletic days (like going dancing in a stuffy club) I just chuck a bandanna in there. But on dressy days, I do have this little collection of grandma handkerchiefs. A box of nice men's ones in white linen or something would do as well.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not classy. I just act like I'm in my 70s.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Monday, 27 July 2009 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

handkerchiefs are a good idea, esp if you ride a bike to work or wherever. i think i had one of those shami-like ones once, yknow, the kind for hikers - they are pretty awesome. i wld not be able to help calling these 'face rags' tho, for some reason. maybe handkerchief is too pretty/polite a word...
xpost
bandanas! of course!

paragon of incalescence (rrrobyn), Monday, 27 July 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

i should look into the kerchief! tissues/napkins get so gross.
i am on and off with blotting papers. been using these.

but yeah, i carry all this stuff and most of the time i never end up re-applying anything but lip gloss.

so i have to order my mario badescu eye cream online now and my order came with a free makeup bag. what i did not realize was that it was going to be filled with travel size (bigger than sample size, not quite full) products!!! jackpot! it's like $20 extra worth of stuff + the 3 little samples that i chose with my order.

tehresa, Monday, 27 July 2009 22:24 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

okay i recently cut off all my hair and am now constantly paranoid i look like a boy (i'm not proud of this, but it's beyond reason). so, long story short, for the first time in my life i have a makeup bag + am wearing makeup on a daily basis.
here is the thing: i really have no idea what i'm doing when it comes to eye makeup--do y'all have any recommendations for either products or techniques? do y'all wear eyeliner daily, for example? eye shadow? what the fuck am i even supposed to do with eyeshadow? one time i complained on an ils thread about my eye-makeup cluelessness and i think Laurel said you just have to practice a lot? but i am a total moron about this stuff + any help would be greatly appreciated.

oh also! i tend to wear a dramatic lipstick; am i not allowed to wear eye makeup in that case? guys can you hear how pathetic i sound? help me!

horseshoe, Saturday, 5 September 2009 22:12 (fifteen years ago)

i don't really know much about makeup either, since i only wear bronzer/eyeliner (i've even stopped wearing mascara lately), but i think if you wear a dramatic lippy then you should probably stick to neutral eyeshadow tones but with lots of mascara for big wide eyes. my limited knowledge is that you should cover the whole eyelid with a light neutral colour, a darker shade in the crease and a highlighter along the brow bone. but i probably read that in a magazine 15yrs ago ;)

Horseshoe what did you do with your hair?! I'm sure you don't look like a boy but I do understand that impulse.

MAC eyeshadows are the best hands down. If you're an eyeshadow noob get something neutral - Shroom and Patina are good basic shades. Also, Urban Decay's Primer Potion is excellent and will make your eyeshadow last all day. :-)

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Sunday, 6 September 2009 03:17 (fifteen years ago)

it's so short! like i basically have no hair right now!

horseshoe, Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

hmm i should investigate some mac eyeshadow. i've been using stila eyeshadows quite a bit and they are pretty good (i got one for like $6 at nordstrom's rack!). i always just use a light shade for lid coverage, and then a liner. i don't really do the crease darker color thing unless it's a special occasion.

horseshoe that lipstick shade sounds awesome.

tehresa, Sunday, 6 September 2009 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah but be careful MAC makeup artists do like to lay it on thick. Yay for short hair!!! :D

OK so I think I have found my favorite ever nail polish. It's the hot pink shade in the OPI matte collection. It's bright but totally matte and awesome. I was fucking around and did a pink/black french manicure on my left hand but I'm screwed now cause I can't do it on my right. lol. Oh well. I love this polish so much. I think I'm going to get as many matte shades as I can find.
