I am almost 36 years old. Do I have any business wearing skinny jeans with boots like all the American U girls are sporting?

OK so I feel really creepy now but I just checked Q's facebook cause I was sure I'd seen a pic of your there before and it only confirmed my belief that you not only can but should rock the skinny jeans/boots combo.

Here is the thing--I am tall and thinish but with Michelle Obama hips. Somehow the boots seem to balance out the hips (would not wear skinny jeans without boots iirc), so I think it is OK but I don't want to be the thirty-something-trying-to-look-younger-and-only-looking-kinda-pathetic lady.

I love matte red lipstick, day or night. As long as you're not also sporting tons of eye makeup or blush, I say go for it!

The boots are brown riding stylee boots--low heel. Michelle Obama and I are built similarly--small waists, "womanly" hips. I tend to look good in the things she looks good in--sleeveless dresses with cinched waists and A-line skirts.

i just worry about the lipstick so i wear it like once every few months and then i feel silly. also the only ppl in seattle who wear makeup are either girls with fratty boyfriends or like, rockabilly and i am neither of those.

Seattle girls are BOOOOORING iirc although if I had to wake up in the rain 900 days a year I might think twice about wearing a skirt & heels too, I guess.

Never feel bad about being overdressed, as long as you're still comfortable enough to enjoy normal stuff like walking & sitting down & potentially eating a meal.

and when not sun it is usually greyish with peaking sun and only rains sporatically and lightly. but anyway grey enhances the green of the trees so <3

Cool thanks! I once wore a few kinda trendyish things and Mr. Que called me out--he's like "you're dressed like you're 23" and I'm all indignant and say "I can pull it off!" and he's all "UH."

i don't know if it's okay but i do this regularly. i never really want to be wearing another kind of lipstick. i don't think it's clowny but i guess it might read too evening. don't really think it necessarily reads rockabilly.

Lots of fun, and also lots of BO-RING (thats the part that doesn't get photographed).

The only lipstick I am wary of is frosty--a little shimmer is OK, but when in doubt go matte.

I'm also not crazy about really shiny lipgloss, which just looks like you've been eating fried chicken n' ribs after a certain age.

my compromise is the dior addict gloss - it is brighter red but a little bit sheer and shiny so it's not matte RED but also it wears off super fast :(

I've missed ILS! Let's bring it back. Although I can't afford to do any shopping right now, and I think for this winter I'm going to make a bunch of trapeze dresses and wear them w turtlenecks underneath.

Yeah maybe you'd like more of a brick red than a true red. For brick red I swear by MAC Viva Glam 1. It is matte and wears really well. Also 100% of proceeds go for HIV/AIDS research!

Hmmmm. I think I have (but forgot about until just now) Viva Glam. I will have to check when I get home but I'm pretty sure that do. I have one that is a really deep read and it's def one of the VG ones so that's prob it. Will have to wait until my lips heal though. Matte lipstick and chapped lips def not a good combo.

Girl walking to train in front of me today had on tights w shorts, but sadly her inside thighs were rubbing and pulling the shorts up into her ass. I was embarrassed for her, and guys were turning around to look on the street. Totally gross.

ehh i don't think wearing shorts with tights and boots is any different from subbing out the shorts with a mini skirt. i've see ladies rockin that look, with kind of 'dressy' shorts, i.e. they look like they're made from the same material as a suit, have little tabs and buttons and cuffs.

I can't see ride-up as a problem -- I'm wearing shorts more like these. not denim! (that was in high school and i am not 16 anymore, doy)

If you have skinny legs that don't touch each other, at least you won't have the up-your-arse problem. But I can't get on board with the look at all. To me it signifies "a kind of person I don't/won't like", which I realize I am a cranky old bat but there you go.

That girl aside, though, why the hate for shorts? They're not for everyone, and they're probably not for that girl, but dang...they're not like, I dunno, juggalo gear or something.

I'm wearing jeans right now. There's no dress code here, and in the summer I've seen a couple guys wear shorts. But most people tend to do business-casual by default, so I generally try not to look too slovenly in comparison. Like, I feel a little self-conscious wearing band t-shirts sometimes. The guy in the cubicle next to me often has on a wacky t-shirt, but he wears a long-sleeved shirt (with the buttons open) over it.

Everyone I see wearing shorts over tights just looks really young and student-y and... Topshop-y? That might just be where I am though, regional variations 'n' all.

I did the shorts w/tights and boots thing when I was in high school - when I was thinner - and they were dressier shorts - so I have a certain nostalgia for that look, though there's no way I could pull that off now.

I'm sorry Laurel - but my favorite pair were plaid, but they were cut more like a skirt.

yeah i have a certain nostalgia for that look too -- i think i must be willfully ignoring something because i have yet to think of a good reason (other than repeated admonitions on this thread) not to wear them

i like the the j crew shorts + tights look posted above. don't think i could wear it though. they'd be too short on me

i also think part of this trend is.. stylists at a lot of stores & a lot of fashion bloggers figuring out that you can make just about whatever top look good if you put it on a model who is wearing either leggings, short shorts, or a very short skirt.

Amanda is you like it and think it looks good then go for it. I'm also in the wouldn't do it personally camp but I'm sure that on the right person it could look great.

i don't really see the difference between these ^^^ and a miniskirt aside from general peace of mind that no one is looking up your skirt.

what i find hilarious about this whole thing is that i really relish the feeling that i wear whatever i want so even if you all had been like "eeehhhh no way" i would still wear my shorts, maybe even with more gusto than before.

my only problem with the ones you pictured would be the bow belt, but otherwise, I'm with ya - could be way cute.

Ahahaha Laurel I was gonna say, that girl coulda been dressed in a burlap sack head to toe and would've been getting leched at.

I said to Manda that I knew she would wear whatever she wanted, and that I hope she does!! I started off with that! Just because I hate shorts doesn't mean two hoots about what she will do.

i think that as long as you are lovin the shorts and tights and rockin it with in yr face abandon, then everything is good! work it! not too hard, not half-assed! this is a key part of Style!

i have this thing to go to, and am trying to put together an outfit. i have a black knit dress, sort of an empire waist, above the knee, and i'm gonna wear it with a black cardigan and jewelry that is mostly brown - so is it ok to wear kneehigh brown boots? they're a darkish brown, cuban heel. it looks fine to me, with the brown jewelry, but maybe it actually looks weird?? the only brown cardi i have is kind of scruffy.

iirc there is a big anti black/brown combo contingent around these parts. However, I'm of the opinion that it can totally work esp in the situation you described. Would be even better if the jewlery was a black/brown mix but I think it's prob fine anyway. Go for it.
