also: dark red aline skirt: why so hard to find??
― no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Thursday, 6 May 2010 02:59 (fifteen years ago)
Oh man if I could find a good aline skirt that hits just about the knee I'd probably buy it in every color. It's such a flattering and timeless cut but I can't seem to find them!
― Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Thursday, 6 May 2010 03:00 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man those blue ones are good.
Get the gold ones and then make beeps stand in them wearing the gold top OK? Thanks.
― Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Thursday, 6 May 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)
the korean site would probably make me sad bc i think my shoulders are too wide to ever wear any azn-made clothing.
a-line skirts: i want some! i've been digging pencil skirts but i realized today that if you have to sit in a meeting for a few hours it's way better to be in a less constricting garment (which is not to say it was like a super tight skirt, but it's just a matter of shape changing when one is seated).

TZA it seems easy-ish to find a lie skirt but they just have WAY too much material. its like a big bubble bouf. v. distressing
― no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Thursday, 6 May 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)
i think i wopuld actually wear those pink boots. i have no idea where but i want them
is it worth spending $85 to have something pretty to look at in your closet??
― no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Thursday, 6 May 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)
going to a smartish dinner tonight and not going to be dressed up enough cz all the cocktail dresses I could find looked like black sacks on me and apparently anything below knee-length is OUT so there were no long dresses and the only long skirt I found is nice but more office wear than evening wear
do not want a skirt which ends just above my knee as my legs and especially my knees are pretty terrible
HATE clothes shopping and look terrible in everything (lol shortassed fattey) so should probably not be on this board at all

dear urban outfitters, Look, I don't hate you like most people do (even though I'm not crazy about the fact that all of your tops, skirts and dresses are completely see-through - whats up with that?? they have this thing called LINING now FYI) but why do you taunt me with a red pleated skirt in your catalog that your website refuses to believe exists? love-ish me

It's completely HORRIBLE to need a specific thing for a specific event because doesn't it seem like you can NEVER find it??
That's why I prefer to be on the lookout for things at all times and buy them when something is a perfect fit or an amazing deal or whatever, you just feel like it. It means storing some stuff in your closet though until you figure out how/whether it's going to be useful. I admit this is kind of inefficient. But is that more or less inefficient than making yrself crazy three days before a cocktail event?

I have HAD IT with trying on super-cute dresses that have this thin elasticated waist (like this or this) because the bit below the waist puffs out like stupid. The elastic bit itself can be hidden with a belt and with some heavier fabric like jersey it's not too bad, but I swear I've tried on like 5 beautiful dresses like this over the past few weeks and it always makes my bottom half look huge. CAN YOU STOP MAKING THEM LIKE THAT, PLEASE?!
― Not the real Village People, Monday, 31 May 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)
Gathered waists are for toddlers. Okay, not toddlers, they don't even have waists. But no one over 10, that's for sure.

total truth. i have tried on these dresses and they all look cheap and make me look like a baby at the same time. like i actually laughed at myself in the dressing-room mirror! but obv it's a youth trend that people over the age of 21 are not meant to buy into - and yet they are Everywhere.i do have a designer-y dress with a high elastic waist but it's high-quality stuff and thick and sewn properly into the fabric.
so yeah, what i have a really difficult time finding are dresses with some actual form (that don't cost $200. which tbh i would prob spend anyway if they fit right, if i were making more money right now.) i also have to h&m dresses that really need to be nipped in in a few places but pretty sure they're not worth the cost. i should actually use my sewing machine... (yeah in all my extra time)

is this some flashback back to the 90s kinderwhore/babydoll thing? i mean the 80s trend seems to have burnt out so maybe the 90s are coming back. lord knows flannel shirts are everywhere. maybe someone can post one of these elastic dresses? i cant really picture what y'all are talking about.
― no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Monday, 31 May 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
i think they do that because it's cheap. gives the illusion of having some shape to it without the production cost of putting in darts and making the waist fitted. i agree, not a good look.
i can't find a pair of trousers for work in the colors i want, kind of a dark taupe. nothing looks right. every pair i try on makes me feel kind of fat and hideous tbh.

ugh i got all these work clothes and then after washing they don't fit as well and i feel cheated. and they were not cheap!
how do i find nice clothing that will stay nice and why is that so fucking hard?
― tehresa, Monday, 31 May 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)
ugh that is annoyingi think there is no logic to 'nice' clothing - i mean, i have a gap skirt from like 8 years ago that is still going strong and $$ stuff (on sale haha of course) that i've worn a few times and given away in disgust, so...
― planes/octaves/dimensions of existence (rrrobyn), Monday, 31 May 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)
You can start by not washing it? Actually I have no idea what you did, I'm just running my mouth! Sorry. Things with a sheen, a satiny or brushed surface, almost never wash well. They pretty much have to be dry-cleaned or all the finish goes off. It sucks. You take a nice, soft, sheeny top and wear it once or twice...then get it wet and it's like Mom's cleaning rag. ;_;
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Monday, 31 May 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)
i always check the care instructions because i hate paying for dry cleaning for tops.. so i get cotton/silk ones mostly, and hand wash them in cold water using dr bronner's. i like the peppermint kind. it is hard to find nice clothing that will stay nice, i agree! most of the blouses i wear for work are from the j crew, but it's not too often that they make one i like, so.. for instance, a couple years ago they had a v nice lightweight cotton/silk blouse with 3/4 sleeves.. i ended up buying four of them (most on sale)
club monaco has nice ones sometimes, but lately it seems to be all stretch fabrics in very light colors that are unflattering on most everyone also cut too short
― wears suburban hang-ups on her sleeve like some kind of corporate logo (daria-g), Tuesday, 1 June 2010 04:56 (fifteen years ago)
dr. bronner's for clothing? it seems so harsh!
i only hand wash silk, etc. but cotton blend blouses that are supposed to be washable... sheesh! like unless it's poly, nothing washes well. SO frustrating. i can not afford to dry clean everything. and not washing is not an option.
― tehresa, Monday, 7 June 2010 01:03 (fifteen years ago)
My general idea of washing a dress shirt is to soak in cold water w some detergent (or Woolite) for one cigarette's-worth of time, then rub together the insides of the collar, and the insides of the cuffs. And the underarms if nec. Rinse in cold. Lay flat on a towel, then roll it up and stand on it to squeeze all the water out.
But some fabric finishes are just ruined by water, I don't know what else to do about those.
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Monday, 7 June 2010 13:14 (fifteen years ago)
It's not even the finish as much as the fit/shape. Sometimes I wish I had a job where I had to wear scrubs or something.

can someone remind me of a good shopping aggregator to look for, say, tweed skirts?
