I have way too many clothes and probably about a quarter of them I don't even wear, but probably would if they were altered. don't really know what can be done & what is worth it, though!
first, my favorite peacoat. it's just J Crew from a couple years ago, which of course they make every year, but not likely in this color (super nice shade of coral) any time soon, plus it's pretty much in perfect shape and I don't want to buy another one. but I should've bought a tall/size small instead of a medium. the body is too big, though the shoulders are fine. can this be fixed?
second, is it going to be expensive and will a DC tailor be like "WTF" if I try to ask them to convert this 80's rayon dress into a skirt, eg just cut off the top half and put in a zipper and waist, it is pretty stylin but not as a dress.

The dress is going to be doable.
I have doubts about the peacoat. Even if they agree to do it, I suspect the proportions won't really turn out right and it's be halfway the price to a new coat. I'd be curious as to what they tell you and how it turns out.

d'oh. I think it cost around $250 at the time? it's got some extra lining in it or something. such a good color though..

If the coat were a shirt, I'd say yeah, it could work, but I don't know what all's involved in altering heavy-weight fabrics with full linings. :( Felicity perhaps correct.

daria, you could always take the coat into G Street fabric and ask one of the gurus if it can be done--if so, there are staff there who do quality alterations and don't charge an arm and a leg. I had the lining replaced in a wool peacoat and I think it cost me about 50 bucks, including the fabric.

thanks, that's good to know. that reminds me actually, I have a lovely vintage black wool coat from the 60's, very simple but a great shape.. but the lining is all messed up. will have to pay them a visit in the fall.
