Do girls today still wear slips? I find them invaluable.

unsure of the future of slips, hoping for the best

i own and wear slips, usually just in winter tho, b/c they keep skirts from sticking to tights and because they add warmth. in summer i wear them under v thin dresses, but usually it is too hot out for modesty layer

i remember when i was a kid, my mom tried to get me to wear slips and i was always v reticent, esp bc they were always white or light pink, ugh!
all the slips i own now (5?) are vintage-y 2nd-hand and a pretty blue-green. because i died them all at once one day. i am on the lookout for a black one tho, as that would make sense.

What's the difference, in English, between a petticoat and a slip?

Un peu d'Eire, ça fait toujours Dublin (Michael White), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

As far as I know, a petticoat is poufy and a slip is flat.

Rrrobyn, I wear slips for all the same reasons you do. My favorite full slip is turquoise, but my favorite half slip is a mini my mom used to wear at the dawn of the miniskirt. It's black with goofy little brown and white 60s flowers on it.

My mom was pretty much the queen of slip-wearing when I was a kid. I always admired her collection. I have a red one I have always wanted to wear as a dress, but have never had the nerve for.

In 9th gr I was going through that phase where I wore long johns under my floppy late 80s jumper dresses, and I had trouble with static cling one day, which was brought to my attention by the group of upperclassmen who pointed, laughed, and loudly mocked me as I walked across the caf with my skirt all staticky and bunched up on my legs.

Ever since then I have worn a slip without griping.

What an unflattering phase that was, good lord. I had just gotten my braces off and was sporting my new retainer at the time too.

I would pay someone to come over and line all my skirts as tight-sticking is a real hazard for me. I love wearing skirts and tights. I have a half-slip but it's more trouble than it's worth - I'm always scared the skirt's going to ride up and show it (it's kind of loose ish and not short enough).

what you need is a new half slip! i have three for all different lengths of skirts.

I actually prefer lined clothes to wearing slips! But that's because of my build; straps love to fall off my shoulders, and I dislike too many waistbands bunching up. So extra layers are just extra layers of trouble.

HOWEVER in summertime when cotton skirts stick to your sweaty self, I think a slip is invaluable for letting you not worry about that no matter how many times you sit down and stand up.

Yeah it's the bunching up waistbands thing I detest.

I was gonna highly recommend the microfiber kind that are all stretchy all over cos it clings to my ass and hips and waist and stays put instead of bunching up like the old nylons did (at least on me), but if you wanted the kind of slip that glides over and hides, er, "lumps," I guess a stretchy, clingy one isn't gonna do it.

two weeks pass...

so i had this great idea - i would buy a bunch of these cheap full slips from target and dye them pretty colours (i've formulated some really nice colours for our fall/winter season where i work, so i can just throw them in when i dye other things), and they would go great under a couple of clingy black rayon dresses for winter.

luckily i only bought one to start with - they don't dye!!! it's a cotton/poly mix so i thought it'd be fine, since i dye a lot of cotton poly mixes but it only took a tiny fraction of the dye, so instead of coming out a beautiful deep grass/olive green, it came an extremely pale ugly sort of turquoise, with tiny patches of green on it. i'm so disappointed!

any reccs for where else i could get cheap dyeable full slips??

I don't know the answer to your question, but I wore a slip today and it made me feel good pretty much all day long. Slips!

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 September 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

i must have gotten confused with something else i picked up - this slip IS 100% polyester, which is why it didn't dye.
found these, they're cheapish, but shipping is expensive, so i need to buy at least 3 to make it worthwhile.

Isn't an all-cotton slip just as "sticky" to other fabrics as the outer clothing it's supposed to be, err... helping?? Slips should have a crisp, smooth feel so clothes slide off them/around them and don't bunch up, at least in my understanding. I would think that cotton jersey one was just for warmth in the winter, for women who don't like long underwear and/or prefer dresses.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

well, those cotton slips are advertised as working like a nylon slip would, so that was what i was wondering too.

anyhow, i ended up buying three different styles of nylon slips off to test dye, since i read somewhere that nylon DOES dye... but they're in now and they are super pale and they still have 1.5 more wash cycles to go through so i'm not holding out much hope. i'm really disappointed bc they would have been a gorgeous olive green, deep peacock-blue and navy if they had turned out right :/
