getting a suit made

so uh before I blow this joint I'm probably gonna get one, maybe two suits made. any advice. I don't really know what I want - nothing too boxy, nothing too slim either. I want something 'timeless' (lol) that will match well with most shirts and ties and shoes. what kind of fabric? color? patterns, yes no?

Where are you getting them made and, if you don't mind me asking, how much is this going to run you? I'm sort of intrigued by the idea of doing this.

my advice is to look through a fashion magazine for a picture of a guy about your build wearing a suit that looks good, then take the picture to a shop and say "gimme one of these".
be sure you get them to make the sleeve buttons actual functioning buttons. I wish I had asked for that.

dayo i would love to have the access you have to tailors in HK, i say take advantage of it while you can! my brother in the air force got a bunch of shirts & suits made in HK when he was stationed in s korea and they were apparently very reasonably priced and well made

i can only speak for myself but my wish list of suits reads, in order of priority:

1. navy 2 button
2. charcoal 3 button
3. shawl tuxedo
4. lt grey check, 3 pc.
5. something foppish, maybe a black watch plaid or something

dayo you do have a lot of choices to make but i'm gonna assume that these suits are gonna be made to measure so i don't think you need to worry too much about fit -- they will probably use your measurements to grade a preexisting suit pattern to scale with your body, then make additional alterations after you try it on

I bring in my favorite suits to my tailor and tell them what I'd change about it (fabric weight, lapel widths, pocket placements. pleats/vents. etc).

For a "timeless" cut, you are correct to avoid anything too fitted or boxy as those represent the outward swings of the suit style pendulum.

Black suit is a must (esp. if you are in Asia). I have a couple linens which are nice when in warmer climes. But everything else is wool... fine gabardines. Italian is always nice. French too. Maybe some of that HK silk? Are you still in HK?

yeah I'm getting it done in HK, SS. thanks for the tips elmo! from what I hear they take measurements, send them to ppl in China, and then they send the suit back to be finished up at the shop. cost is about $4-500 at some well-known shops although obviously the sky's the limit with how much you could spend.

things I'm considering:
-lapel width, 'height' (the place where it breaks)
-natural shoulders or padded shoulders
-pocket type, placement
-jacket length
-pleated or flat fronts
-waist placement (thinking a bit high)
-???

oh yeah, armpit vents (is that what they're called) - higher is 'better' right?

so in the end I found a tailor who wasn't at the top top end but still got good reviews & apparently used to be the official taylor to her majesty's services or something and also knows how to make scottish highland and lowland outfits, lol

pretty happy w/ the fitting today, the trousers fit really well but still looked pretty 'slim', which is a feat cause I have thunder thighs, I was impressed

one thing I'm apprehensive about, is that I chose a really nice looking fabric, but it's actually really thin and probably won't drape well, it's a super 150, I didn't know about these things when I went and ordered, and apparently probably won't hold up well to daily use

oh well, this is probably a 'few times a year' suit at best so whatevs

I guess the cool thing is if I get rich I can just 'phone my tailor' and 'place an order' even when I'm back stateside
