Stop it: Coloring

I'm tired of coloring my hair, now it's super long and a hassle. I'm also cheap, so have always colored it myself. How to go about this? Natural color appears to be mousy light brown and 50% gray; modified color has been a medium golden/reddish brown generally.

i mean, the professional do is a beautiful thing. "can you afford it" is the only question

Maybe? But I will begrudge the $ and the time probably.

I chose professionals, with the aim to have your hair restored as much as possible because growing it out may lead to spur of the moment re-dyes. And the price of the professional to fix it once outweighs the cost of doing it yourself over and over if you keep dyeing!

There's also the "cut off all the color" option, though that would currently leave me with incredibly short hair and I'm enjoying having it long. Also, the idea of finding a color that's a closer match to the actual has occured to me (light ash brown? maybe). I will admit that my home attempts at highlighting/lowlighting were seriously misguided.

Jaaaaaq, when it's an unusually complicated situation with a growing-out issue and two colors and stuff, just GO PAY SOMEONE with expert skills to take care of it. Once you LIKE IT, you can take some tips from the stylist or have someone else duplicate it or w/e but you have to start from somewhere.

I've often had really bad luck or something with getting dye fixed professionally.

What I've found works is to pick an intermediary colour between the dyed tone & your natural one and do that for a few months to ease the transition so the line doesn't look so hard. Also for those moments where you feel "argh this looks like shit!!" use a semi-permanent to touch up your roots. (be careful with grey hairs as semipermanents may have unpredictable effects on grey.

Trying to work out what to do with mine & having the same problem. I was dyeing my hair ruby red which was just too much work & upkeep so I switched to a more gentle light auburn which is closer to my natural dark blonde/light brown. I've got to the point where it's long enough to cut off the ruby colour but I kinda like the 2-tone effect but I dunno!

I'm thinking that might be the way to go, finding that intermediary color that's a closer match and letting the gray come on through for awhile. I wear it all bundled up in public all the time, so it's only that root-y area (and bangs) where I want a smoother transition.

I may really hate the full-on gray mode, but can't judge until I've tried it.

i missed this! but i'd look for maybe a rinse/deposit only color to even out a little and then as things grow out they should fade/taper more evenly?

I dyed my hair dark brown, it is always too dark but I spray it every morning with a hydrogen peroxide solution for a week and I get reddish highlights that way.
