I just bought three awesome pairs of Skechers and now the entire internet is picking on me. What did I miss?

i've had two pairs of skechers. they're very sturdy and inexpensive. usually when I go to famous footwear or dsw, there might be one pair of skechers that arent offensive.

imho they are just poorly designed and not very well made, for the most part. plus for a lot of ppl they kinda bear the stigma of being 'discount shoes.' (not that saving money is a bad thing, but--)

Skechers reminds my of my sister and her alt.friends as high school sophomores in Wichita Kansas in the early 90s

they're probably glued together just fine i just think everything they make either straight up looks like absolute dogshit or is at best a clunky/plasticky knockoff of some standard that imo it'd be way better to go with the 'real deal'.. like i don't see any reason to even wear their CVOs...

the styles their website sorts under "dress shoes" tells you everything you need to know about their target demographic. it's kind of insulting.

i had a pair of Skechers sandals that literally fell apart on my feet as I was wearing them - threads disintegrated, sole cracked and flaking off in chunks, buckle on the sidewalk. those were some cheap-ass shoes

Guys, maybe they make one or two models that are all right. I'm sort of maybe willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but overall they're 90s looking and pretty heinous.

Sperry can't sell enough original-design topsiders, so like dumbasses they design other models that look "newer" with more plastic and weird moldings, and Sketchers copies those!

yeah to be fair even shoe companies that i like a lot -- like, clark's -- also make a bunch of assy overdone athletic styled shoes too, it's not limited to sketchers but they are by far the worst

Yeah, those could have been A LOT worse. BTW I will cop to buying a pair in 2006 that I couldn't actually believe were sketchers because they looked like Gazelles or something. They were commuting but were pretty cute and cheap and did the job just fine.

the bottom pair are fine-ish, unless someone sees the 's', the other two are atrocious & u should be ashamed, just imo :)

They're not positioned as Target-grade shows in Australia. They even have specialist shops in middle-class fashion malls, and I found my last pair at an accessories shop that has an incredible reputation for not being daggy. One of those pairs I linked costs US$160 here ffs.

im going to keep it real; they're a regular dude shoe & we know based on dan perry's enthusiasm for current de la soul fashions = hes into regular dude wear, which is cool & totally socially acceptable, there's a bit of arrogant swag to young ppl who envision themselves as somewhat fashionable downplaying regular dude fashions bcuz its regular. some of my friends dress like this & when im like "yo these fashions are shitty" i'm doing a bit of dramatic overstatement

Yeah, I'd agree with that. There is the occasional exception but, when I think of Sketchers in general, they're one big dated NAGL.

re the sketchiness of skechers: the main reason I went back to them is the quality — they didn't stink after three months like just about every other brand I've ever owned, they lasted ages, they looked good with everything, they were very comfortable and now I just sound like my parents.

Kern I imported them from the US, including shipping it works out to about half the local shop price.

that just goes to show you how much of a big crock this whole 'lesser quality' shit is - they're all made in the same factory in china or vietnam. unless they're handmade allen edwards leather double monkstraps or something, perceived quality differences are just going to be based purely on the price and marketing strategy

My mom-in-law bought me a pair of Skechers for Christmas six years ago. They're pretty gross BUT they're slip-ons and I wear them when I need to do things like walk the dog, go hiking in shitland, stomp on yucky stuff, etc. Stuff I don't do in my "nice" sneakers. The fabric has worn out on the inside back where my heel rubs against, and they now look levels beyond just "they are Skechers," but they're still holding up! I'm kind of impressed by how functional they are all these years later.

FWIW I do have some standards as to what gifted items I will wear. That same year she also gave me a t-shirt that said I have the pussy, so I make the rules, which I only wore once, inside out, to paint in, before I threw it the fuck away.

that is unnecessarily sarcastic but for real -- there are countless manufacturers in china alone, i think it's pretty lazy to just assume that stuff made in china is all made the same way and to the same standards?

i do not have RECENT first hand experience of sketchers quality, all i know is that the one pair of sketchers i owned were made of shitty bonded leather that creased and split, and the stitching between shoe to the sole completely disintegrated while i was wearing them in the rain.

I had one pair fall apart on me after a year but every other pair I've owned has lasted long enough for me to replace them out of boredom

hah yeah elmo sorry that was unnecessarily harsh. but I wouldn't be surprised if there were just a few massive factories in china serving all the major shoe manufacturers - the subcontracting model is generally how global businesses operate in 3rd world countries. why build 5 separate factories when you could build 1 that has 5 production lines?

casual shoes cost so little to make relative to their market price that I'm not sure lower-tier companies like skechers really are sacrificing any quality issues compared to puma or asics - or rather, any cost savings they could squeeze out would be offset by the poor reviews/impressions they would get.

well they arent super fancy pants anymore, although back before they started to suck i prob had like 20 pairs of fleuvogs - but idk, i have bunches of new balance and adidas and tiger/asics stuff, lotsa doc martin boots, converse for when i want to punish my feet for no good reason.

i just get all weirdo about stuff like shoes and sweatshirts and jackets for some reason, like i will dismiss stuff automatically because of the brand or never having heard of the brand. on the plus side i am not this way about jeans so $$wise it is probably a net sum gain i guess because you people pay too much for goddamn jeans imo.

i also used to date a lady who ran a shoe store so that is part of my fleuvog/campers/clarks etc jump off point.

the main thing i dont like about skechers is that they seem deadset on finding a way to make their logo/name super visible, which is only ok on athletic shoes imo. i would still wear a thousand pairs of skechers before you ever got me into a pair of fucking diesels tho
