I just bought three awesome pairs of Skechers and now the entire internet is picking on me. What did I miss?

sketchers are pretty bad dude
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 14:49 (thirteen years ago)
i have not owned a pair of sketchers since the late 90s
lol chunky black monkstrap things, so awful
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
i've had two pairs of skechers. they're very sturdy and inexpensive. usually when I go to famous footwear or dsw, there might be one pair of skechers that arent offensive.

the suburb of shoes
― runaway (Matt P), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 17:34 (thirteen years ago)
they're the suburb of shoes that has stores like Starbux, McDoneld's and Burger Queen
― jaxon, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago)
they're just aesthetically gross.
― dangobro (D-40), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 17:40 (thirteen years ago)
i mean, it depends on which ones you get.
― chris "difficult" brown (rustic italian flatbread), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:22 (thirteen years ago)
no
― runaway (Matt P), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:23 (thirteen years ago)
I am guessing most of the ppl who hate Skechers aren't short
tbrr any shoe with a thick-ass sole >>> any shoe without a thick-ass sole
― the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:26 (thirteen years ago)
Matt P, what shoes do you wear.
― chris "difficult" brown (rustic italian flatbread), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:30 (thirteen years ago)
imho they are just poorly designed and not very well made, for the most part. plus for a lot of ppl they kinda bear the stigma of being 'discount shoes.' (not that saving money is a bad thing, but--)
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:33 (thirteen years ago)
fuckin' Shape-Ups...
― Occupy Strip Clubs (Kerm), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
also:
shape-ups are gross
mesh panels and plastic trim are gross
square toed shoes are gross
athletic-styled dress shoes are gross
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
oh jesus
they have 'dressy' versions of shape-ups now
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:41 (thirteen years ago)
the thing is,h is that they are well-made! mine have lasted for over a year each.
― chris "difficult" brown (rustic italian flatbread), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
that is a pretty interesting standard for "well-made"
― Occupy Strip Clubs (Kerm), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
haha i know! a whole year!
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 18:48 (thirteen years ago)
Skechers reminds my of my sister and her alt.friends as high school sophomores in Wichita Kansas in the early 90s
― rip van wanko, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
they're probably glued together just fine i just think everything they make either straight up looks like absolute dogshit or is at best a clunky/plasticky knockoff of some standard that imo it'd be way better to go with the 'real deal'.. like i don't see any reason to even wear their CVOs...
the styles their website sorts under "dress shoes" tells you everything you need to know about their target demographic. it's kind of insulting.
― Kerm, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago)
at best a clunky/plasticky knockoff of some standard that imo it'd be way better to go with the 'real deal'
yeah, this. why would anybody need to buy knockoffs of vans?
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
lol they have a Tom's knockoff called "Bob's"
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
i had a pair of Skechers sandals that literally fell apart on my feet as I was wearing them - threads disintegrated, sole cracked and flaking off in chunks, buckle on the sidewalk. those were some cheap-ass shoes
― llurk, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
Guys, maybe they make one or two models that are all right. I'm sort of maybe willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but overall they're 90s looking and pretty heinous.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago)
Sperry can't sell enough original-design topsiders, so like dumbasses they design other models that look "newer" with more plastic and weird moldings, and Sketchers copies those!
― Kerm, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
yeah to be fair even shoe companies that i like a lot -- like, clark's -- also make a bunch of assy overdone athletic styled shoes too, it's not limited to sketchers but they are by far the worst
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago)
btw this is right about where I draw the line at defending Skechers
― the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

i kinda like treks, tho

awww thanks guys
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
it did take me a REALLY long time to find three pairs I didn't hate
yeah those last ones are not awful, they are kinda puma-ish? fair enough
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
harsh as i have been itt i just want to say that i am not immune to bad shoe choices, nobody is perfect, for ex. i have just been looking at vintage bowling shoes on ebay
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, those could have been A LOT worse. BTW I will cop to buying a pair in 2006 that I couldn't actually believe were sketchers because they looked like Gazelles or something. They were commuting but were pretty cute and cheap and did the job just fine.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago)
the bottom pair are fine-ish, unless someone sees the 's', the other two are atrocious & u should be ashamed, just imo :)
― dangobro (D-40), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
lol
you're such an asshole
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
OK maybe not but that was sort of mean.
their shoes always look over-designed like an issue of raygun magazine (lol 90s)
― lol-qaeda (am0n), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 20:38 (thirteen years ago)
nobody has to know they're skechers
― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago)
They're not positioned as Target-grade shows in Australia. They even have specialist shops in middle-class fashion malls, and I found my last pair at an accessories shop that has an incredible reputation for not being daggy. One of those pairs I linked costs US$160 here ffs.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago)
fwiw the "sketchiness" of Skechers in the US is being grossly overstated in this thread
― the tax avocado (DJP), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:37 (thirteen years ago)
im going to keep it real; they're a regular dude shoe & we know based on dan perry's enthusiasm for current de la soul fashions = hes into regular dude wear, which is cool & totally socially acceptable, there's a bit of arrogant swag to young ppl who envision themselves as somewhat fashionable downplaying regular dude fashions bcuz its regular. some of my friends dress like this & when im like "yo these fashions are shitty" i'm doing a bit of dramatic overstatement
― dangobro (D-40), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago)
that said, wouldnt be caught dead in skechers
remember 'its the S' ad campaign?
haha, ftr i am not bagging on sketchers because the are too mainstream and i would never be so rude as to tell anybody that i hate their shoes irl. some judgments are best kept private!
but i do not like ketchers and i cannot endorse them and i think they are generally terrible, though the exact degree of awfulness can vary
― elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:50 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I'd agree with that. There is the occasional exception but, when I think of Sketchers in general, they're one big dated NAGL.
― Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
maybe what we're getting at is that the overarching impression of skechers is stull stuck in the 90s - they've changed their style since then, as your links show, but haven't done enough to divest themselves from that perception
― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
One of those pairs I linked costs US$160 here ffs.
wait a minute so did you steal these? how the fuck many kangaroo bucks did you spend on three pair of sketchers?
btw protip: when it takes you a *really long time* to pick out shoes you *don't hate* that's a special clue that something isn't right.
ps just jokes your shoes look fine etc
― Kerm, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago)
as long as they're not identifiable as skechers from a 2 second once-over you're okay

― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
I see what you mean dayo, they've found a sensibility and stuck with it. We never got the "it's an S" campaign iirc.
re the sketchiness of skechers: the main reason I went back to them is the quality — they didn't stink after three months like just about every other brand I've ever owned, they lasted ages, they looked good with everything, they were very comfortable and now I just sound like my parents.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago)
Kern I imported them from the US, including shipping it works out to about half the local shop price.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:05 (thirteen years ago)
that just goes to show you how much of a big crock this whole 'lesser quality' shit is - they're all made in the same factory in china or vietnam. unless they're handmade allen edwards leather double monkstraps or something, perceived quality differences are just going to be based purely on the price and marketing strategy
― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
I understand all that but in practice my Skechers were actually that good.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:20 (thirteen years ago)
Autumn, the pair I have are similar to the first one you posted, but in brown, but darker than the brown they have there.
dayo, that reminds me of the time I bought some $40 department store tie (I can't remember Nautica or Perry Ellis or something?) and came across the same tie in Kohl's three years later with some lesser brand name on the label.
― chris "difficult" brown (rustic italian flatbread), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 22:56 (thirteen years ago)
(oh, and for $12, also)

My mom-in-law bought me a pair of Skechers for Christmas six years ago. They're pretty gross BUT they're slip-ons and I wear them when I need to do things like walk the dog, go hiking in shitland, stomp on yucky stuff, etc. Stuff I don't do in my "nice" sneakers. The fabric has worn out on the inside back where my heel rubs against, and they now look levels beyond just "they are Skechers," but they're still holding up! I'm kind of impressed by how functional they are all these years later.
FWIW I do have some standards as to what gifted items I will wear. That same year she also gave me a t-shirt that said I have the pussy, so I make the rules, which I only wore once, inside out, to paint in, before I threw it the fuck away.

― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 02:48 (thirteen years ago)
this is extremely inappropriate but I read that t-shirt slogan and the first thing that popped into my head once I got my eyes to stop bugging out was "let's make lots of money"

― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 10:49 (thirteen years ago)
they're all made in the same factory in china or vietnam
hmmm yes very true. all shoes everywhere are made in the same factory in china or vietnam. except for allen edwards (sic).
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 13:57 (thirteen years ago)
that is unnecessarily sarcastic but for real -- there are countless manufacturers in china alone, i think it's pretty lazy to just assume that stuff made in china is all made the same way and to the same standards?
i do not have RECENT first hand experience of sketchers quality, all i know is that the one pair of sketchers i owned were made of shitty bonded leather that creased and split, and the stitching between shoe to the sole completely disintegrated while i was wearing them in the rain.
― elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:08 (thirteen years ago)
I had one pair fall apart on me after a year but every other pair I've owned has lasted long enough for me to replace them out of boredom
― the tax avocado (DJP), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:12 (thirteen years ago)
can't argue with that
― Kerm, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

I'd pay god money for such a testimonial tbh
― Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 19:57 (thirteen years ago)
good
hah yeah elmo sorry that was unnecessarily harsh. but I wouldn't be surprised if there were just a few massive factories in china serving all the major shoe manufacturers - the subcontracting model is generally how global businesses operate in 3rd world countries. why build 5 separate factories when you could build 1 that has 5 production lines?
― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 21:21 (thirteen years ago)
casual shoes cost so little to make relative to their market price that I'm not sure lower-tier companies like skechers really are sacrificing any quality issues compared to puma or asics - or rather, any cost savings they could squeeze out would be offset by the poor reviews/impressions they would get.

wow jjjusten. I'd never have figured you. What kind of shoes do you wear?
― piper at the goats of j0hn (rustic italian flatbread), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago)
well they arent super fancy pants anymore, although back before they started to suck i prob had like 20 pairs of fleuvogs - but idk, i have bunches of new balance and adidas and tiger/asics stuff, lotsa doc martin boots, converse for when i want to punish my feet for no good reason.
i just get all weirdo about stuff like shoes and sweatshirts and jackets for some reason, like i will dismiss stuff automatically because of the brand or never having heard of the brand. on the plus side i am not this way about jeans so $$wise it is probably a net sum gain i guess because you people pay too much for goddamn jeans imo.
― guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 23:36 (thirteen years ago)
i also used to date a lady who ran a shoe store so that is part of my fleuvog/campers/clarks etc jump off point.
― guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 23:37 (thirteen years ago)
the main thing i dont like about skechers is that they seem deadset on finding a way to make their logo/name super visible, which is only ok on athletic shoes imo. i would still wear a thousand pairs of skechers before you ever got me into a pair of fucking diesels tho
― guh (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 23:39 (thirteen years ago)
i will never wear skechers
