What are you wearing around the house today? The weird world of house clothes!

I know this has been mentioned on other threads, but it's interesting enough to me that i think it needs its own thread in ILS (i see there's on in ILE, but, yknow, let's talk Style-specific). I mean, I think it says a lot about a person! no judgment, just interesting!

Do you wear different clothes at home and when out? Do you have "house clothes" exclusive to inside the house? Do you have an at-home "style"?

Seriously at at home I am the world's most awful-looking dirtbag. Giant oversized men's white Tshirts from the bargain bin with bike grease and/or paint stains on them, paired with yoga pants on which the elastic is failing, plus wool ski socks and Crocs on my feet. Hair scraped back into an elastic in whatever way keeps it from touching my neck. Horrible.

And I change the moment I get home from anything, too. I never wear my outside clothes in the house, ever.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

i was thinking about this because i went to a gallery tour earlier today sort of semi-dressed-up and it's this change of season not-cold not-warm time, so i'm feeling mixed up about clothes a bit, so i was wearing tights for the first time in a while too. so i got home and immediately untucked my (multi-coloured) shirt from my skirt (with stars on it), took off the belt, took off the tights, but was cold, so put on a pair of green glittery knee socks. realized that i kind of look like i should be in a circus. but it's fun! i work at home mostly, so hey.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

Tbf if I'd ever lived alone I might have more interesting house clothes but I've lived with guys so much of my adult life that my house clothes are based on hiding my body in the most comfortable way possible and it not mattering if I bend over, climb a ladder or a stairway, flop onto a couch, put my feet up on a table etc. Also I should be able to wipe my hands on them while cooking or eating.

Octavia Butler's gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiised (Laurel), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

it seems funny that you would wear scrubs at work AND at home! always on duty

i don't necessarily favour comfortable clothes at home and always feel like i should own more yoga pants or something.

ah, living alone, yeah, it changes things... i have a slight fear of leaving the house half-dressed because i do the get-half-dressed thing and do work and etc and how many times have i almost left the house in just tights??

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

ha, living with a woman i didn't know v well (CL roommate) is what actually pushed me into scrubs/tshirts over just say walking around in my underwear all the time (after years of living with dudes or women i knew v well)

i love pinfold cricket (gbx), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah when I lived with a bf last year I basically never wore pants. That was comfortable; I don't like having things around my waist. Roommate life, though, requires yoga pants/pajama pants.

i have house dresses for summer, which are just jersey dresses i only sort of like and wouldn't nec wear out but still feel 'dressed' in - they solve the pants issue well!

also lol @ wiping hands on clothes when cooking - i own 4 aprons and actually wear them o_O (not all at once)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 6 October 2011 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

I have some house dresses for summer but jersey spaghetti-strap things or clingy tank dresses do not hide body! I don't know why that seems so important but like I want to do stuff in the house without embarrassing someone else/myself by showing everyone down my shirt when I lean over.

but when i've cooked at other people's houses and asked for an apron, most people do not have one, or they might have ones that go around the waist. i guess i just thought everyone owned at least one full-on apron.

I was just having an internal monologue the oth day about how to RSVP the next time I'm home visiting and my mother tells me to go put a bra on before she'll serve me breakfast because there are men in the house and they might notice that I have breasts so I should hide them, and maybe I'll just tell her that the freedom to look slutty (ie like a noticeably female human) is part of what makes a house a home.

there is plenty of partial / full nudity walking around my apartment, in and out the shower, etc. but even if i do not leave the house i tend to get 'dressed' after my morning ablutions, and i usually stay dressed once i get home. no surprise, i often wear a tie around the house.

THIS THREAD IS FOR ME!!!

I change as soon as I get home. Bra comes off immediately and i usually change into yoga pants and a t shirt or sweatshirt depending on the temp. In the summer I wear cotton house dresses that are different from my outside dresses. I probably have more house clothes than outside clothes. This is a very important topic for me!

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

boxers, fruit of the loom white tee in the summer. in the winter, because it's lol cold in the house, sweatpaints wool socks hoodie & layers underneath

dayo, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

Like, I had to stop myself buying comfy long sleeve t shirts for home because I own too many already.

I wouldn't go outside in house clothes though. Even if I'm just going to the corner store I'll usually put on some jeans or something.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny how strict and urgent the outside inside divide is - as soon as the door closes my jeans come off. and then the slap bass starts.

dayo, Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

Sometimes I put off going out to buy orange juice or toilet paper or cigarettes even, because I don't want to put jeans on.

WE DO NOT HAVE "SECRET" "MEETINGS." I DO NOT HAVE A SECOND (Laurel), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

Friends came over last weekend and I felt sorta bad cause I didn't change out of my yoga pants for them but I've known them for 10+ years now so I guess that's yoga pant wearing territory. I did put some jeans on for the ILX crew though.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

x-pants - Oh I've totally done that.

I took Benson outside this morning in my yoga pant/braless t shirt ensemble before I'd washed my hair and while I was wearing my glasses but only as far as the parking lot cause there was no way I was going on the street like that. I was scared enough that someone was gonna come into the parking lot and see me looking like that.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

Actually I did the same thing a couple weeks ago on a Saturday and there was, in fact, someone out in the parking lot. It was a couple and they were sitting around the bbq at 7:30 on a Saturday morning grilling something. It was pretty confusing. Breakfast sausages? idk. It was p strange.

Juggy Brottleteen (ENBB), Thursday, 6 October 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

get home from work, take off work pants and work shirt, wear boxers and undershirt the rest of the evening.

I wear houseclothes to walk the dogs all the time -- it's best in spring and fall because i can throw a jacket on and no one knows i am not wearing a bra PLUS i have pockets for poop bags.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 October 2011 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

xxp a relative used to wear a metallic sauna suit around the house, which looked like a spacesuit

triple black belt in ILX-fu (snoball), Thursday, 6 October 2011 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

if i spend more than 5 minutes in my house w/o resorting to the robe it is only because i have definite plans for the evening. sometimes even then, although i get grumpy when i have to put actual clothes back on and sometimes bail on whatever is going on.

for variety i sometimes wear pajamas as well. wearing shoes and socks in your house when home solo is for like jesuit priests or something idk.

Most workdays it's just me in my workclothes minus overwear but with an apron if I'm cooking doing chores.

Weekends, I may hang out in my pajamas/robe if I don't plan on leaving anytime soon, even if I'm going downstairs to do laundry. I won't get dressed up unless I'm dining or it's cold. Mostly just jeans/khakis, t-shirt, sweater and maybe a cap or something. This time of year I tend to go out earlyish to watch the EPL games.

It's not yardwork so much, dayo, it's taking garbage down to the curb or doing laundry downstairs kind of stuff.

Art Arfons (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 October 2011 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

I have my housewear sorted out by situation:

Mornings: pajama shorts; maybe a t-shirt if I'm cold
Evenings: undershirt from the day; exercise shorts
Weekends & days off: colored tshirt or polo; cotton shorts

I used to wear a robe, but I have significantly less space to lounge around in my new house :/ Need to address that problem soon.

my house hoodies and house cardigans situation seems forever out of control, even though i've given/thrown many away - i think jenny pointed this out on the cardigan thread - the life cycle of cardigans, where they all eventually end up being house cardigans and either you wear them or you just keep them around, like, just in case? funny

most definitely, that's what the minnetonka moccasins i have are for. i'm paranoid about stepping on a bug if one gets in my apartment, which happens a couple times a year

i don't really have house clothes except a navy american apparel t-shirt dress. usually i just wear a pair of shorts & a bright colored t-shirt. i also have a new england patriots t-shirt that is only house clothes because i tried wearing it to go get a coffee one sunday last season & i swear, everyone i encountered was inexplicably rude to me

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Friday, 7 October 2011 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

Since not working for two years I have developed such a low tolerance to wearing 'proper' clothes - even jeans that are OK to walk around town in, I find uncomfortable inside. I always have some kind of sweatpants on even though I'd never wear them outside the house. I feel a bit gross if I stay in a robe for too long. My landlady (an older woman) lives downstairs and she's always in comfy gym type gear (I think she works out) so I'm kind of absorbing her style, I think.

There's a limited time in winter where you can get tons of cute loungy PJ trousers in Old Navy for like $6 so I go a bit crazy then.

Is your house drafty?

Mine are the same year-round: short. Will add a t-shirt if I'm sitting where the A/C is blowing on me in he summer or if there's a draft in the winter. Pants come off the second I'm indoors, and I don't see the point of wearing a shirt.

Strangely, I feel more comfortable wearing shorts than going around naked. When I lived with my first boyfriend, we usually didn't wear clothes indoors, but I got out of the habit.

xp - OTM re no pants.

Je55e, Friday, 7 October 2011 04:23 (thirteen years ago)

Although I like the way jeans look. But not indoors.

I went to a fundraiser hosted by a close friend and she was such an amazing hostess that she provided me and a friend with gym shorts to wear b/c we had tried to dress decently and wear pants, but their A/C wasn't on yet, and I think she knew we would give more generously if we took off our pants.

Je55e, Friday, 7 October 2011 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

:D

You can identify me in complimentary posts.

The Mexican grandma cotton dress is clearly my ideal clothing item and I should just buy 8 of them.

I have these! They are a summer house clothes staple along with a couple of light jersey knit skirts and some vneck shirts. I have two robes - winter and summer. I have aprons and house pants and t-shirts (long and short sleeved) just for house wear. I have house cardigans - winter and spring/fall.

I tend to layer bc I'll be cold walking around but hot for sleeping so it's often nightgown over housepants with a cardigan. And my house slippers are Crocs with fuzzy lining. If i cook, I throw an apron on over it all. None of these things coordinate and my house sweater is Freddy Kruger striped. So I p much look nonstop ridiculous any time I'm home and not expecting company.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

In the real winter sometimes I wear a knit hat with all that. Chicago is cold.

pullapartsquirrel (Jenny), Friday, 7 October 2011 04:38 (thirteen years ago)

It's cold outdoors. Inside it's not outdoors. Ergo, inside it's not cold.

Je55e, Friday, 7 October 2011 04:46 (thirteen years ago)

Usually a comfy cotton shirt, boxers, short pants, and socks - some or all of which may be jettisoned in some situations. Sometimes if I've just showered, I'll just walk around in a big towel for an hour or two if there's no overriding need to put on real clothes. When a flatmate is home, I generally make sure I'm fully dressed (though that varies considerably depending on who it is) but will utterly disregard fashion or style; only comfort matters. Guests I dress up for though.

piper at the goats of j0hn (rustic italian flatbread), Friday, 7 October 2011 09:14 (thirteen years ago)

im like everyone else in this thread, i have house clothes and outside clothes. anything with a stain, too much fading, rip, too stretched out, becomes house clothes. i have house t-shirts and outside t-shirts, house jeans and outside jeans.

the only time i wear house clothes outside is for quick neighborhood errands, the only time i wear outside clothes in my apartment is when entertaining.

i also noticed that accessorizing is an outside-the-house thing too
i seem to take all my jewelry off when i get home, even though outside the house, i feel kind of naked without it (not that i wear scads of jewelry, but i do always wear bracelets, a ring and earrings at the very least. i don't know how that started to happen but it did a few years ago!)

today i had a 10am meeting, but knew i'd be coming home to do work, so am wearing clothes suited to both house and street: skinny jeans with some stretch, fitted t-shirt, new cardigan. a.k.a. my winter uniform.

i seem to take all my jewelry off when i get home, even though outside the house, i feel kind of naked without it (not that i wear scads of jewelry, but i do always wear bracelets, a ring and earrings at the very least. i don't know how that started to happen but it did a few years ago!)

this is otm - I'll take my watch off at home and not think about it at all, but as soon as I cross the door out my arm will feel naked if the watch isn't on it

there's a grocery store in a very small downtown mall here that is connected via underground passage to mcgill university residency - those kids are always around buying beer and bread and ice cream and wearing their slippers and dirty t-shirts and sweatpants with animal paws on the bum

it's part of the culture here in the inner city for girls to wear pyjamas outside.

That's also part of the culture here in our semi-rural-to-an-extent suburb!
