What kind of thing are you looking for? Classic, unconventional, masculine, unisex, etc, etc?

i really love Diptyque's fragrances - http://www.diptyqueparis.com/personal-fragrances.html - many of them are unisex, but they also have a few colognes too that look nice from the descriptions - and one of them is called L'eau de l'eau, which i find both amusing and intriguing

there is a perfume store in the west village called Aedes de Venustasthat that is so fun (and snobby in a fun way) that i really love - even their top 20 page is kind of amazing: http://www.aedes.com/Aedes-Top-20_c_87.html

but anyway, you could just go to a department store and smell of stuff and see what stands out for you as appealing, put it on yr wrist and see how it works with your body chemistry - get samples, profit!

hipster-pretentious indie perfumers whose perfume i really really want to try: http://www.alabonfire.com

The A Lab On Fire stuff looks really interesting.

Sticking with 'colognes', Chanel's Cologne is very good but i'm not sure how widely available it is. Aqua di Parma do a wide range of fairly traditional ones - their Colonia Assoluta leans more towards being unisex and is one of the best. Thierry Mugler's Cologne is more unconventional - citrussy, clean and reminiscent of fressly-pressed clothes.

Looking at scents more broadly, there's any number of great ones you could think about. It all comes down to what mood you want the fragrance to evoke, what you want it to convey about you and what context you'll be wearing it in.

For busines wear, i really like Guerlain's Habit Rouge - it's a fairly traditional masculine that smells crisp and powdery.

The Comme de Garcons Incense range is wonderful. Zagorsk and Avignon are probably my favourites.

Etat Libre d'Orange do some great, unconventional fragrances. Rien is one of their more traditional ones - heavy notes of leather. It's very good.

Away from niche fragrances, Gucci's Envy is worth a look. It's not as good now as it was ten years ago but it's still pretty interesting - lots of ginger.

Bulgari Black is another favourite. It has a combination of tea, brown sugar and burnt rubber which sounds strange but smells fantastic.

"I would definitely wear Cannabis Santal by Fresh"
i wonder what that 'scent' is all about

two months pass...

I find myself grabbing Cartier's eau de cologne more than any other scent.

three years pass...

i'm in my late 30s. i feel like i need to consider this, after a lifetime of just smelling clean. ideally.

anyone got anything to say on colognes the past 3 years.

think we had another thread on these. my favourites are clinique - happy, not too expensive, p clean smelling and simple, good everyday scent. then on occasion comme des garcons - wonderwood, chanel for men, and if you want to push the boat out or get a sampler, creed - green irish tweed is p nice despite the ludicrous name, which i guess seemed a good idea when they invented it for cary grant or whoever.

for years i didn't wear them but when you get into the habit it's nice - people often ask about a scent - it is good to smell good.

Buy a bunch if tiny tester vials from fragrance.net and lyckyscent to figure out not just the types of scents you like but what actually wears well on you.

I love friends and family who have signature scents bc I might not see them much but I might get a whiff of their scent from someone on the street and it's a really nice reminder.

I spent ages trying to find the right scent for jordan and it ended up being the same one my female BFF wears - light blue by D&G (not the homme one). It smells totally blah on me but on these two it's the greatest smell ever.

TK Maxx seems to be selling its Miller Harris stock at £25, which is 75% off retail in the clearance racks at the moment. They're reliably good.

just1n3 otm. In the UK you can use http://www.scentsamples.uk.com/; they don't have everything but I was ok with splurging on my current in-rotation scents (Diptyque Philosykos and CdG Vetiverru) after trying them out first.
