i am starting a new part time job as a restaurant host (upscale casual dining, $$) and plan to wear the following:
blue pinpoint oxford shirt, standard point collarnavy & white stripe repp tienavy, grey, & black gun club check sport coatnavy worsted trousersblack calf beltsocks (navy or grey, whatever is clean)black cap-toe oxford shoes
yes? my concern is that a patterned jacket w/ pattern tie might be too much for the situation and i might need to tone down my pattern-mixing tendencies for the job? idk

go get em

prob overthinking this but eager to make a good first impresh

congrats on new job!
i like how menswear patterns are so easy to mix. i think it actually downplays the effect of wearing patterns if you have a couple of them and the effect is more subtle. otherwise it can be lacking imagination -> plain shirt, plain trousers, plain jacket, LOOK AT MY STRIPED TIE
― seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)
haha so the feedback on my outfit on the first shift was that it was 'a little dated' and 'too professional' and i have been instructed to 'look more like a service worker'? idk
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)
still trying to parse wth that means, exactly
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:17 (thirteen years ago)
does that mean, like, a dark shiny dress shirt? because ugh
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 13:19 (thirteen years ago)
i think it just means wear black
― Lamp, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)
'dated' is funny for how objectively wrong it is but having served at a non-fancy place i think the less 'fashion' you are the better? like you want to look neat/presentable w/o challenging anyone who you might have to serve i guess
― Lamp, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, i think black is at least somewhat expected even though i generally hate wearing black, almost as a rule. the servers wear all black, tho, and i'm expected to dress differently from the servers. the hostesses usually wear nice dresses or smart skirt & top outfits, so idk
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)
charcoal slacks & colored dress shirt w/ solid tie, black accessories, no jacket?
which reminds me, i definitely need a tie clip so i don't mop the table with my tie as i bus & set tables
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
help
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)
yah i think its just dark trousers, light shirt, unobtrusive? i think really the idea is just not to call attention to yrself too much
― Lamp, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
like most ppl dress like absolute garbage, yr job is to put ppl at ease, if you look too considered or 'fashion' instead of simply neat and polished it may make ppl feel bad about how theyre dressed, so the less you standout the better? i many be projecting here haha but thats my take
― Lamp, Wednesday, 11 April 2012 16:13 (thirteen years ago)
honestly if they want me to wear something uniform they should just tell me what to wear, and the person giving the criticism is basically the least stylish person i know
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)
this is making me kinda mad
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)
someone suggested a "nice royal blue dress shirt" ugh like gross me out, for shurrr
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)
maybe they meant "service worker" euphemistically, so you should show up in a mesh shirt and booty shorts

brb, going shopping for a studded jockstrap & leather bowtie
tho generally I'd guess they mean "khakis/slacks + muted color shirt"; since I personally am a big fan of muted pastels and stripes I'd probably go for something like this:

― God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, i guess that's one direction to go. not sure about pastels for evening, tho.
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)
hmm, fair point
are you against the Van Heusen/Geoffrey Beene axis? if not, you could go this way:

yeah those p good, i guess? i can definitely pull a look together around something like that but haha i am so picky about my clothes it is ridiculous, i think my biggest problem here is gonna be 'getting over myself' tbh
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
hahaha so i asked the manager point-blank if he had any specific wardrobe recommendations. he didn't have anything to say but "more contemporary" and "more servicey."
i am done getting worked up about this because now this is just flat-out silly.

I think Lamp's advice itt is the most practical. black pants, colored shirt.
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 12 April 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)
what are the colors of the restaurant? odds are Bonobos sells pants in that color

"Casual Butler" is the look we're going for, I think
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 12 April 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)
haha ok the chef-owner just told me that i looked 'great, like a million bucks,' whereas he says the manager 'looks like $69.50."
so i guess my error here was outclassing management. lollllll
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 12 April 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)
haha vindication!
― horseshoe, Thursday, 12 April 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)
the one thing i unreservedly love about mad men was when in the first season roger sterling would go around telling dudes they looked "like a hundred bucks." it made me laugh every time.

nice
