This is where we ask for recommendations on all things style.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

Can anyone recommend

1. A good primer (the orange smashbox isnt doing it for me)

2. Industrial strength pore minimizer or preferrably pore disappearer

3. A place i can find some flatish red maryjanes

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

i also need #2. i like the dr. brandt pores no more i tried a sample of, but it's so expensive and i wish it had spf or something to justify it being $45.

bell_labs, Thursday, 24 July 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

preferably i want a tinted moisturizer or foundation/pore minimizer/spf all in one. does that exist?

bell_labs, Thursday, 24 July 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

Sunny, I feel really strongly that shoe questions that specific can only be answered by searching. I don't think I have time to do an internet-wide shoes search today, though. Try endless.com, they do free overnight shipping and free returns and I got shoes I like a lot from there.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

Basically you want online places that allow you to narrow your search by heel height and color, to make it easier.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

L, ive been searching for red mary janes for years. no go. the closest ive seen are basically flats with a thin strap which they call a mary jane which really arent. :( it was a shot in the dark.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

Believe me, I'd like nothing better than to scroll through pages and pages of shoes until my eyes cross. Unfortunately, I need to keep my job.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

mac prep + prime spf 50 might be something to check out: primer/pore minimizer/heavy-duty sun protection all in one. i've not used it, though, so no idea how it actually works.

also, i like benefit's dr. feelgood. it's not a primer, exactly, but it mattifies and somewhat minimizes pores/fine lines. it's supposed to go either over or under makeup, but it can be worn on its own as well.

lauren, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

hmm these both sound v v intersting!

tehresa, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

i actually have MACs Prep and Prime and it worked great for a while, so great I had one of those "WOAH" moments in the mirror, but now doesnt seem to be working? or maybe im used to it now and cant tell?

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Can any people out there who have had red hair longer than I help me with makeup?? I've got relatively pale ivory pinkish skin (made to look a little more ivory because of my hair colour, phew) and bright red (Ronald McDonald) hair, with brown eyes. I end up with light gold shadow, heavy mascara & red lips, or electric blue shadow, heavy mascara & medium pink lipgloss every day it seems, purple looked bad, green makes me nervous.. I don't know how to spice up my eyes!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand how purple can look bad? I use a sort of shimmery light violet whenever I wear red near my face.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Also remember there's always silver and grey.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

xpost I will take a picture next time but it just kinda felt like.. way too much! Which is a pity, because I only really got into the purple when I had orange hair, just recently.. maybe I just did it too thick/too big or something.

Mmmm, silver and grey. I think I have to google a website that shows you *how* to put on stuff like that - silver makes me look kind of like a robot at my own hands :( I think the lightness of the silver turns white on my skin and makes me look like a bleaching victim.

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

augh sorry to be like "shoot you down, shoot you down, shoot you down." I suck!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

haha me too!

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Nah, it's okay! You gotta do what works for you.

Speaking of shooting down, I just found like 5 pairs of red mary janes on endless but none are flats, all are medium-to-high heels.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

frustrating. theyre either weird almost sportshoe crossovers or heels or ballet flats. so annoying.

the worst part is that i saw a pair, maybe 8 years ago, that i LOVED buti waited too long and they sold out. so now im forever chasing those shoes.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. Here's the first real prospect I've found, although I don't love the styling.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

i used to love me some red doc marten mary janes.

tehresa, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

who wouldn't?

Surmounter, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

Too clunky! :D

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

they weren't at the time.

tehresa, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

This one is actually sparkly and a more classic shape!

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

I don't normally recommend Steve Madden but hey, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

This Ecco is a teeny bit sporty in the heel but a brighter, truer red than the other ones so far.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Here, the strap is a tiny bit farther up than is proper but not all the way front like some of them.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

Pricey, but by far the nicest thing I've suggested so far!

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

for real, those are great

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

I want all the red shoes!!!

ENBB, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

but mostly the last pair.

ENBB, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

i do need something like this too, tho in a darker colour, but really haven't been shoe shopping/trying - i really like these frey shoes, but comments say toe area is small, which wld prob not work for my feet but still...

ohman but i did find 2nd-hand cowboy boots on the wkend for $18!!! they are rad. i am a cowgirl.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

and by frey i mean frye

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

that last pair is nice! the problem is my huge wide feet just dont look right in delicate shoes. I have to go for tall or chunky.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

For pete's sake. In that case, do Dr Mart's still make an oxblood Mary Jane?

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

haha...sort of but not ideal. picky, huh?

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

Well, the problem I forsee is that chunky shoes, apart from like platforms or clogs going in and out of fashion (and you already said you require flats) tend to be a) meant for younger wearers, and b) not of the quality one wants over age, let's say, 26.

Plus Mary Janes are a young style anyway. I feel like the two super-highways they can go down are "Rocketdog-style teenage trendiness probably made of plastic" and "minimal, ballet slipper-ish, the Mary Jane grows up". In other words, I wouldn't have fished through 46 pages of red shoes if I'd know you wanted something "chunky". :)

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

Fluevogs?

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

well those elusive mjs were from when i was 26ish so maybe this is really me chasing my youth! Really, thanks for looking xx

Fluevogs could be the answer. ive always had a thing for their blue w/ green shoes. they seem to have moved away from that weird goth heel which is good.

these arent maryjanes but they hint at them and if they were in red id buy the shit out of them. i do kind of love the cream though.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

if this only had one strap:

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

They do have a cherry red mary jane flat but it's got some white stitching or cut-work on it, and it's a little...young. Did you see?

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

ah yes i see that one. that red is a little too vivacious.

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

i love this thread. sunny and Laurel, you guys should team up as picky consumer + patient personal shopper more often.

horseshoe, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

i have no helpful advice, except don't buy the NARS primer because it sucks and is also expensive.

horseshoe, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

i want some saccos. my friend said they are the most comfortable ever but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

tehresa, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like I've had one or two pair, undoubtedly from DSW.

Laurel, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

converted! i really like the second to last ones

sunny successor, Thursday, 24 July 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

FINALLY. THANK GOD.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

yes i think those look like what you're looking for!
2nd pair - so totally laurel haha

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

i bought this pair of rocket dogs because all my shoes are falling apart and have holes in them because i've been putting off shoe buying for so long and the rocket dogs fit fine in the store and then i wore them one day and they tore my feet up really bad so now i can not wear them and still have no shoes and i am wearing crappy flip flops today. anyway, i think this means: new shoes time! where should i go?! maybe i will buy after work tonight?

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

DSW! Or Cent 21 but that's kind of taking your life in yr hands and is still not "on sale" enough for me usually.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

i have been to dsw. nothing.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

maybe the bk one, but i dont' feel like going all the way out there.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:16 (seventeen years ago)

There a Juno place on Broadway between uh Spring and Greene, I think, that often has shoes I like. They run a tiny bit Eurotrash but you can navigate around those, it's not as bad as most of the 8th St shoe ghetto places. Anyway they have frequent sales, or "buy one, get one half price" or whatever. And if you don't find anything there, you can mosey another block south to the David Z's or whatever it's called these days, they have all the Bronx styles which are omni-present I'm afraid but honestly pretty cute and not terribly made.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:24 (seventeen years ago)

i think that store closed or moved?

bell_labs, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

Oh feh, did it? I haven't been in a few months probably.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm IN LOVE with endless.com for shoes, they have free overnight shipping! And free return shipping too, I think.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:30 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm... i am feeling really picky about comfort and fit, so i'm worried i would be shipping and returning for 3 weeks before i found something. i do not mind spending $ if they are well made and comfortable/supportive, btw. does not have to be bargain store.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

Well, my last new pair of shoes were soem Clark's sandals and I adore them, they're the most comfortable things right out of the box, no breaking in. A++++ could walk forever, and you know how I feel about walking.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

post pic pls!

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

i am totally afraid of the folly that will be my feet + actually buying online shoes i have never put on said feet

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

yes! this!

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

These in orange! I see the little fuckers just went on sale, too, so now I might need to buy the white ones as well.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah i remember you posting those! orange are great! clarks fit my feet reallly well. hmmm

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha i was just looking at the gold ones!

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

so they are really comfy?

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS. And my feet are wide-ish across the toes, too.

Laurel, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

hmmmm i may have to consider a purchase! my last pair of clarks was comfy!

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

I am having a real crisis over how to cover my legs at the moment. Bored with jeans i have too many, will be a while before my wool trousers see utility again, what should I be wearing?

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously, Ed, you're just going to conclude that the answer is "an orange jumpsuit" or "a sarong" or something equally kooky, and you can do that without our input.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

the possibilities are endless.

how do you feel about linen trousers?

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

I love linen trousers, I have not seen a nice pair to buy this year, my old ones seem a little tatty.

My orange jump suit is for special occasions. I guess I am looking for things that are not jeans, cords, wool. I got a great pair of John Varamos trousers in the Barney's Warehouse sale this january, which are great if a little dull, but they were only afordable because they were super discounted. I always have trouble with trousers.

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

seersucker?

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

Not the craziest idea, where to buy seersucker?

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:23 (seventeen years ago)

that i am not sure of. are you in uk or nyc atm?

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

uk till the 5th of August

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

But probably will shop in NYC as it is so very much cheaper.

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

thanks

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

fun! very m white!

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Indeed, I think they would go well with my sand coloured linen jacket. I think I'd need a non-busy shirt to go with them, something I lack.

Ed, Friday, 25 July 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

so... i think i just bought what sunny is looking for, from sacco. they only do them in black, though (i asked!).

t, you should check them out (17th btw 5th and bway). t

lauren, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i walk by that store all the time and am afraid to go in bc of $$ but i think i am at the point where i will spend $$ for good shoes bc i can't fuck around w/ the crap anymore.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

ooo..i kind of love these:
