also is there a way to customize the list of boards displayed up top? I'd be just as happy knowing IRE didn't exist, but being able to hop about to noize dudes and whatever the fuck else with ease and grace.

I (stupidly) considered it to be foolish and immature. Then it dawned upon me that IRE was in fact a quasi-scientific project designed to skewer quite what it is to be online, and that I was the foolish, immature one being skewered (along with everyone else who uses a computer).
