These years both struck me as particularly great years for one off pop hits. Of course now that I've done a thread I can't remember. Help me please

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You know like that song about a coconut tree.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! And that band Vanilla who went "no way no way .... manamana", I'm pretty sure that was 1997.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Did "Barbie Girl" come out in one of those? Aqua had a few hits, I suppose, but that song feels one-off anyway

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Daphne and Celeste?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No they had two nearly identical hits! Ooh Stick You and U.G.L.Y, I can't remember what year. Barbie Girl came out in 1997

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not much good at this

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither am I, I've forgotten my whole theory.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cheeky Girls would be good, let's send them back in time to 1999

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i researched 1999 and all that i got was a lot of britney spears. 1997 was probably better than 1999 just because older is always better. but hey you cant forget "butterfly kisses," whatever year that was.

rebekah, Monday, 17 February 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked "Doctor Jones" better than "Barbie Girl".

jel -- (jel), Monday, 17 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, these were my years! When I ws really into that kind of pop. I've forgotten it all too though, so maybe it really wasn't that memorable.

Livvie Tapper (Livvie), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I think you came up w/some more recently Elisabeth, didn't you?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! But I can't remember what they were of course.
Take any one off pop hit and you can usually assume it was released in 1997. Lots of indie stuff too.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Really I wish I could come up with more 1997 stuff, it really is so very interesting!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex on the Beach! Who remembers that, it was 1999 and I believe there was a dance to go with it. I think.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember that! The excuse for its explicit title/lyrics ("I wanna have sex on the beach") was that they were meant to be singing about the COCKTAIL, I think. According to my sister, at the time.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Bull SHIT! God that song was horrible.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, and those are pretty rude lyrics to have 13 yearolds singing as they roam around the house, really! Pop music, it's GROSS.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 26 September 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

both years were bad for me. in 1997 the spice girls were the only thing keeping me sane. i lived in studholme with a hundred matchbox 20 fans. i don't remember much about 1999 pop music, but i lived with emma and that sucked. i started listening to sleater-kinney, that was good.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 27 September 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've decided we might have to include 1998 in this, make it a three year cycle. That way we don't miss out on such hits as "it's all about the money" and that "I'm a big big girl" song.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 29 September 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

How about that band "Popsie" - I think their song went "I always mingle but I'm STILL SINGLE!" and that's 1998.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 29 September 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

don't think i remember much from either year tbh, not very interesting years.

jonathan gittins (nevermind^), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I just remember 99-2000 being a good year for "Creed". God, I hate that band.

Lola Falana, Monday, 29 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonathan you live in england, have you heard that other Cheeky Girls song?? It's called "Take off Your Shoes" I think.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 29 September 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Landing - Broken Glass

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

That horrible "Lemon Tree" song, which is the work of FOOL'S GARDEN, it turns out. I thought they were called Big Question or something, horrible ADULT ROCK name either way.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hahah!! i heard "the cheeky song" but i've successfully avoided the one you said:s hahah!! i heard/saw the most insane song on the tv "the hazzards" "my gay boyfriend", it was like one of those kid rancid pop things, rather like the cheeky grils tbh, but it was like...wtf?! they just showed what on the tv??? etc etc.

jonathan gittins (nevermind^), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hey if you ever see any Cheeky Girls singles for like real cheap buy em and I'll pay you back! please!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

mambo no 5!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

can you get enough of the mambo craze? probably that was 2000, sorry. i only know novelty songs from that year, cos juice was free to air and my flat watched it religiously.
