donna (donna), Sunday, 22 September 2002 01:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I can understand why. I don't hate them. They just annoy me.

Shaz, Sunday, 22 September 2002 09:23 (twenty-three years ago)

They annoy me too. I'm close friends with too many of them to try and justify hating them though. Unfortunately.

alex (alex), Sunday, 22 September 2002 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I get scared I am one. THEN I meet one and don't worry about it anymore. Trying to prove how clever you are is the surest route to looking like an idiot, apart from actually being one.

Lisa: "Better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt"
Homer's brain: "Uh oh, better say something fast"
Homer: "takes one to know one!"

*sigh*

As a member of the Campaign To Make Pretentious A Value-Neutral Word, you can all . . . eat a dick.

(c. jess harvell 2001 etc)

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Literally? "Eat" is really a funny term.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Not too sure - would you grill it? Boil it?

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 23 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Werner Herzog ate his shoe once, boiled and smeared liberally with duckfat, if i recall correctly. the secret is to select the right herbs for the bouquet garni.

petra jane (petra jane), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm mm. Dick. Delicious, at least in this context!

alex (alex), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

god i hate pretentiousness. i'm fucked.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

re Herzog eating shoe, Les Blank filmed it, (I seen the film), he did it 'cause he said if Blank made his film about the pet cemetary he would eat his shoe.

I'm not sure about pretentious, oh yeah maybe but then there's like say Will Oldham with his royalty pretentions and so on and I love that but I guess that's not what y'all mean.

spectra, Wednesday, 25 September 2002 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess "pretentions" are fairly different fram actual "pretentiousness"... one's a quirk, maybe quite endearing, the other's more like a whole outlook/lifestyle, sort of. Y'know. And thus more pervasive and irritating.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 25 September 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretentious: When you spout masses of pseudo-intellectual drivel, when 99.99999999% of the world don't even understand what the hell you said, (or even give a fuck). ;-) eh Donna?

Perry Bernard (panterus), Friday, 27 September 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Perry how do you tell the difference between pseudo-intellectual drivel & intellectual drivel?

three weeks pass...
your despite for all people who, from your own perspective, demonstrate the qulity of pretension, which is itself barely definable in non-relative or unambiguous terms clearly results from one of two possible syndromes commonly associated with defense mechanisms: (1) you are either jealous of their strong resolutions and character, which do not allow them to be satisfied with the station that has been imposed upon them by society and which cause them to strive to better themselves or (2) you are intimidated by their staggerig genious and can only find repose in the process of dismissing their works of genius and rhetoric as pretention and poppycock.

this thread reminds me of some tosser i know who had his picture in the local paper, and had to express to everyone afterwards that he was "reading jean genet" (sp?) in the picture as if that would make everyone go "oh WOW i'm so impressed".

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 20 October 2002 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What a loser. Was he in a band?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)
