Chihuahuas have fewer genetic defects than many other breeds but they do still have a few common problems
MOLERA/FONTANEL
This is a small area on the head towards the front of the skull where the bone does not meet and can remain open throughout their lives. Dogs with this condition are extremely susceptible to severe injury. This is considered a characteristic of the breed as opposed to a defect. Up to 90% of Chihuahuas have this and most do not outgrow it. Therefore, be gentle when handling your Chihuahua's head and try not to pat it but stroke it. Encourage strangers to stroke behind your puppy's/dog's ears instead of on the head.
HYDROCEPHALUS (water on the brain)
Fluid builds up and interferes with the circulation of the blood in the brain.
Symptoms:
Dizziness, seizures, falls, eyes going in opposite directions.
Actions:
Take your dog to the your nearest vet as soon as possible. This is very serious.
