holla tehresa
the economist style guide is an important accompaniment, I think
I went on a rant Friday with one of my civil servant supervisors about how it's such an asinine crime that kids still get taught to double up on the spacebar after a period

HUGE pet peeve, along with anyone who still UNDERLINES instead of italicizing.

HI GUESS WHAT WE DONT USE TYPEWRITERS ANYMORE OLD PEOPLE

I had a total beef w/ a paper collaborator bc she insisted on 2 spaces so when we start putting our writing together it looks like ass.

Tom you will be pleased to know that, based on my love of strunk and white and style guides in general, a friend gave me the economist guide for my birthday last year :)

tehresa, Friday, 21 December 2007 07:26 (seventeen years ago)

I always tell people who use the double space that the HTML spec (HELLO, LIKE, USED TO BE THE FUTURE, NOW IT'S WHERE YOU LIVE) actually eliminates all double spaces automatically. Also I have no idea how anybody doesn't notice when Word et al. underlines every double space with a big green squiggly, except I figure those folks probably ignore the "grammar checker" anyway.

I actually don't think I have my own copy of the og s+t. I just remember being vaguely fascinated with it in high school and wondering a lot in college why we had to buy some different, inferior style guide for every humanities class (ans: supports the economy)

El Tomboto, Friday, 21 December 2007 07:30 (seventeen years ago)

tehresa and max, we should hang out

El Tomboto, Friday, 21 December 2007 07:31 (seventeen years ago)

omg max when i am back and you are not traveling the world we should just get together and bitch about mla because i haet it sooo much. ruined my semester. my teacher was so busy trying to do things "mla style" that she kept telling me to capitalize first letters of words in a work of music that are NOT capitalized because she just thinks about mla and doesn't know shit about musical works (which will be really fun when she reads my paper oy!). i'm like hay lady, why don't you just worry that the sources i'm using are valid rather than if the works cited page has hanging indents or mis-capitalized words?!

tehresa, Friday, 21 December 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

also tom: i think the green double space thing is maybe an option in Word? because i've never had a Word program highlight that. i wish it had because then my paper collaborator would have seen how glaringly obvious it was that she was wrong on the spaces.

tehresa, Friday, 21 December 2007 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

HUGE pet peeve, along with anyone who still UNDERLINES instead of italicizing.

lol I got so used to italicizing things on my computer that I tried italicizing things I wrote in pen by making the letters slantier. It took me like 2 years to realize that I was missing points on all the assignments because I wasn't underlining.

Double spaces are still important if you are going Lord Custos-stylee.
